Dear Sir: : Re yohr editorial “Tdentity Not Problem” that appeared in Tribune, April 16th. At the Registered Guides meeting at Alexis Creek of last June the writer, after endeavouring to weigh the hazards of allowing the shooting of hornless animals, that is moose, in areas where moose, cattle and horses were all utilizing the same range, summed up with these words: ‘If, Mr. Commissioners, after now being warned of such hazaré you open season on hornless ani- mals in such areas then I am glad it is upon your shoulders and not mine that full responsibility rests.” To which Commissioner Cunning- ham replied, “Leave us to look after that.” However, I hardly think this case should be judged upon whether or not horses, cattle or humans mighc get shot; from the viewpoint of Game Management the question at that time was— ‘‘Are the moose now in sufficient number in ratio to existing winter brouse to warrant destruction of the cows?” Almost as a body the guides and trappers stat- ed their beliefs that there was an abundaney of brouse to sustain exist- ing moose populations through an- other winter. ‘This contradicted violently with the findings of the Big Game Biolo- gists who apparently insisted there were ‘fifty thousand moose in Cariboo and adjacent areas to the Cache Creek check station and that unless half that number were harvesiead they might not survive another win- ter. I make this statement from ma- 1949 DE SOTO (with ’53 licence) 1947 DODGE 7-Passenger. fluid drive 1946 DODGE 2%-TON .. 1940 CHRYSLER (radio) ... 1950 PREFECT. To my knowl- edge, neither Game Commissioner or Biologist has, in Field and Stream, so far made any statement contra: to this. Further in that article Mr. Dutresne has this to say — ‘‘Harvest these moose, by shooting, or allow their dead bodies to pile up in the woods. That is what the Biologists are telling the Commissioners.” Thus, anyone reading this article must be left with the belief that it is fashionable to start killing the cows. I have factual knowledge of eighteen cows and calves being shot and left to rot in the vicinity of the Cariboo, Horsefy and Chileotin Roads. Condemn such vandalism if you will but after all this is what the Biologists stated as being neces- sary — (These cows and calves were shot before cow season opened). Now there appears to be some doubt as to whether there were those fifty thousand moose — Maybe the Guides and Trappers were right, the Biologists wrong. And now another factor enters the picture. In the form of a lodge-owner writer from the Bridge River country who attacks Erie Collier, the Guides and Trap- pers and Commissioners, Divisional Inspectors and Game Wardens all as the common enemy. This writer, Wally O'Keefe, states, “For fifty years, malpractices in the form of guides, trappers, duces, Commission- ers and second hand police Inspec- tors have had their day. Under this questionable guidance the big game population of B.C. is at its lowest Jevel in history.” Then Mr. O’Keefe goes on to suggest remedies among which apparently is the hiring of still more Biologists. So there you have ft, Mr. Editor. Some want more Game Wardens to try and cope with such items as the wasteful destruction of those eigh- teen cows and calves mentioned and some want more Biologists. Who is right and who is wrong I do not know. Of one thing however I am reasonably sure; no matter how much from time to time they might have quarrelled with the B.C. Game Commission, anyone conversant with periodical impulses which have affected our game herds here in the Cariboo over the past thirty years knows perfectly well that it is sheer injustice to level the finger of accusa- tion at Commissioner, Divisional In- spector,, or Game Warden for cur- rent condition of our game herds. If in this hour of strife and argu- ment, the Commission, their Div sional Inspectors and Game Wardens are to be made the scapegoats then I think that the B.C. Registered Trap- Pers Association anyway will stand at the side of this personnel of the B.C. Game Department. Truly yours, Brie Collier.
