Drinkell It was not without a modicum of reservation the boys expressed their concern for Mr. Harold Winch. It was pointed out that with eighteen seats in hand the prospects of the C.C.F. party heing returned to power at a subsequent election. would have been greatly enhancec had Mr. Winch been successful in obtaining even temporary control of the governmental reins. Realizing this, he was wil! go to almost any length to secure that control, He is reported to nave promised the Lt. Governor not to in- troduce any contentious socialistic legislation during the lifetime of the present legislature. It was a good gamble. Unfortunately there were insufficient takers to warrant Mill Owners! Had it come off, Mr. Winch would, undoubtedly, have been lionized within his own party and comph- mented by most factions outside of it. But it mis-fired, and for this sin Mr. Winch must suffer as did Moses, who, after guiding the tribes through years of trial and tribula- tion was denied the privilege of en- tering with them into the promised rand. As the boys see it Mr. Winch’s distress is not without alleviating factors. Actually he is now enduring the lesser of two hurts, Had it been decreed he should lead his party to victory in the forthcoming election he would in all probability have been under the painful necessity of waich- ing the same rabid elements, wnich encompassed his resignation, forget- ting the principles he has fought for so tenaciously in their lust for power and the spoils of office. This would indeed be unbearable torture for him. As it is he can now sit back and rest upon his laurels, if he 89 wishes, without in any way detract- ing from knowledge of a fight well fought, cumulating in eighteen seats won in face of tremendous odds — financial and otherwise. We “feel certain we echo the thoughts of all who admire a doughty warrior, regardless of creed or politics, when we say of this martyr to a eause, Well done, Mr. Winch. - In the table of precedence for Canada, the Prime Minister ranks immediately following the Governor- General, officer administering the 2 MRS. Mr. Editor, Dear Sir: Your editorial re advertisement for promoting beef sales, intrigues me—I do not think the housewife needs to be reminded of the nutri- tional value of beef, ete., they are fully aware of it. They also are more than willing to make meat the central point of any menu—the only stumbling block to their fuller use of this good old standby is the price thereof. I am quite sure all housekeepers would be delighted to buy more of this healthful adjunct to anyone's diet could they but afford it. With due modesty I think £ am considered a fairly intelligent ran- cher’s wife and yet I cannot under- stand the curious ways of high fin- ance that causes the aforesaid beef for which we are paid the munificent sum.of 13 and 18 cents to be so ex- orbitantly priced to thé consuz; I quite agree that your deluge of free advertising should be dropped in the waste basket but there is something else that should -be dropped in fairness to both ends-of this sales transaction — and° that is the tremendous spread between the price paid to the producer, and charged to the housewife. — Should this happy day ever come to pass maybe even the Editor could eat more beef.
