PGE FARES HIGHER HEARING DISCLOSES Vancouver—The Board of Trans- port Commissioners heard last week that passenger fares charged in B.O. by Canada’s two major railroads are lower than those of the B.C.-owned Pacifie Great Eastern Railway. Figures of comparison were iniro- duced by the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways at the hearing on B.C.’s application for re- moval of the mountain differenti on passenger fares. The CPR and CNR said the PGE charges 4.6 cents per mile with no distinction between firstelass and coach whereas they charge 4.5° cents for first-class and 4 cents for coach. eS SUNDAY FIRE ALARM Firemen and the usual number of citizens had their Sunday afternoon siesta disturbed by the wail of the siren, but all the exercise they aad Was a run to the firehall. RONEY DIES IN 89th YEAR Roderick Roney, one of al employees of the Powell River Company, passed away at ihe home of his daughter, Mrs, H. R. Devore’ of Forest Grove Tuesday in his 89th year. Mr, Roney had been i for about two months. He would have celebrated his 90th ‘birthday March 22. Born in Bakersbrook, New Bruns- Mr. Roney spent his early in the United States. He was brought to British Columbia by the newly formed Powell River Company and cruised the timber on the com- pany’s land that became the town- site, of Powell River. He was em- ployed continuously by the huge paper company until his retirement at the age of 75. For the past ten years he has lived with his daughter, and son-in-law at Forest Grove. He leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Mrs. Katherine De- vore; Mrs. Bess Bird, 2250 B. 24th jAvenue, Vancouver; and Mrs. Irene | Fraser, 5158 Victoria Drive, Vancou- |ver; two sisters, Mrs. Sally Doe. Hoqiam, Wash., and Mrs. Della Rich, |Cloquot, Minnesota; two brothers, Norman, Minneapolis and Walter Arlington, Va. Also surviving are six grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Mrs. Roney predeceas- ed her husband in 1924. Funeral, services will be eonduct- ed in Vancouver and burial will he in the-family plot at Agassiz.
