Quesnel Writer Looks at Hydro Rumors In Political News Again Quesnel — Prospects of the long- awaited hydro development on the Quesnel River hinted in speeches from Victoria since the opening of the House has brought a wealth of rumor and speculation to central British Columbia. Basis of it all stems from the an- nouncement that the Social Credit Government plans to seek $20 \mil- lion for the B.C. Power Commission to cover expansion of rural electrifi- ation and expansion of hydfo-electric development. , According to a news report in The Prince George Citizen last Thursday, L. L. King, MLA for Fort George, indicated that development of the Quesnel Hydro was provided for in the request for $20 millions. It is no secret that the Social Credit Government is in favor of continuing development in the Cen tral Interior and at the same time it is realized that development cannot be advanced without some source of cheap power. Extensive surveys have been made || of all potential hydro? sites inte, area from Williams Lake north to Prince George, and the end result of those surveys has been the conclu- sion that the only economical hydro site in the entire Central Interior is on the Quesnel River. While the Quesnel has been esti- mated as carrying a potential in ex- cess of 300,000 horsepower, nothing like that amount can be realized un- til such time as experiments pres- COODWILL USED CARS ~ 50-50 30-Day Guarantee 1952 Pontiac Sedan Mechanic’s Special Power glide, radio, air 1950 conditioner, sun visor Chey, 14-ton Pick-up $875.00 1950 Chev. Should the experiments, aimed at rehabilitating the Quesnel River sal- mon run prove successful, then the power potential of the river will be more than halved. If the experiment: wash out then the entire stream will be available for power. The unfortunate part of the whole thing is the fact that it will take at least 10 or 12 years to prove up the Fisheries Commission experiments and in that time many opportunities may be lost. However with the prospect of some action on at least a partial Quesnel development, rumor is rife concern- is little indication that power gen- erated from natural gas would be cheap enough to use. It is quite pos- sible that the cost would be almost comparable to that of diesel, and so prohibitive. All. these considerations bring thinking right back to the hydro pos- sibilities. No definite price has been set on hydro power but taking the example of other areas into consider- ation it is reasonable to assume that costs in this area would be attractive to large consumers. There haye been rumors of pulp and paper developments and other heavy industries that might be in- terested in this part of the province. Latest of these possibilities is the Aluminum Company of Canada, which is rumored to be looking for a location for a secondary establish- ment to process metal turned out at Kitimat. Socreds Toy With Idea Of Lifting Eight Mill School Tax Ceiling Kamloops — The lifting of the eight mill ceiling rate on the levy, on rural lands for the operation costs of school budgets was the proposal made by the Provincial Cabinet last November, prominent Vinsula ranch- er T. P. Wilson, told a meeting of area representatives of Kamloops School District last week. Mr. Wilson, who was one of five B.C. Federation of Agriculture dele- gates meeting with the Cabinet on a school cost revision said he felt tree to speak at the school meeting as it had been intimated in the Throne Speech at the opening of the legis- lature there would be a change in school Rnancing. Further to the lifting of the ceil- ing, he said the cabinet at that time proposed setting the 1952 costs as basic and the rural ratepayers would have to pay 50 per cent of any in- crease above that amount. Other groups represented at the meeting in Victoria in November in- cluded the Union of B.C. Municipali- ties, with which Mayor J. E. Fitz- water was a delegate, B.C. School Trustees Association and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. All attending the meeting with the Cabinet were sworn to secrecy as to the proposals made. Superintendent of Bank of Montreal Heads New Division Montreal, Feb. 17 — In order to meet the immense industrial develo ment which is taking place in wes' ern Canada the Bank of Montreal is raising to a new status its field or- ganizations in British Columbia and the prairie provinces by creating new territorial divisions and by the establishment of assistant general managers’ departments at Vancou- ver and Winnipeg. This is the first expansion move of its kind covering western Canada to be undertaken by any of the chartered banks. ‘To direct the bank's new Pacific Coast division, which comprises the Yukon as well as British Columbia, the appointment of W. H. Raikes as assistant general manager, has been announced with headquarters in Van- couver. Harry Raikes, a native wes- terner, who has served the bank from coast to coast has been super- intendent of the B.C. district since 1950. He previously held important appointments in Ottawa, Montreal and New York, as well as at a num- ber of points in the west.
