, Thursday, February 19, 1953 THE TRIBUNE, WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. a Page 7 Former Stage Coach Driver On Cariboo Trail Tells Experiences Arthur Haddock, one of the few remaining stage-coach drivers who drove on the old Cariboo Road, gave an interesting Friday. _ Mr, Haddock’s family arrived in Ashcroft on the first C.P.R. passea- ger train out of Port Moody, on Julye 4, 1886. They saw the first freight | and stage teams pull out of Ashcrolt for the Cariboo, and in 1893 their son Arthur started driving the stage from Ashcroft to Barkerville. He was to continue on the Cariboo road until 1925 through the transition from horse drawn stages to™auto-/}y mobiles. Mr. Haddock began his talk by displaying a phenomenal memory for names. He listed the names oi 54 stopping places and their owners, also which ones boasted bars, be- tween Ashcroft and Barkerville; the names of 135 horse and mule team- sters, 26 stage drivers, 25 teamsters, 12 bull teamsters, and 10 pack trains.
