~ More About

(Continued from page 1)

in Sunday’s game. There was just
25 seconds left when the big de-
fenceman picked up a rebound ber]
hind the ‘lake defense line and took
his time about picking a spot be-
‘tween the pipes where McNiven!
wasn’t. ~ |

It was a ding-dong battle all the
way on Sunday with the Stamps
weakened by the absence of Latin
and Smetanuk. Frank's: back was |
bothering him again and Gordon hurt)
his arm in the Saturday night fray. |

Sugden, the Bears’ captain, who
Poses a threat everytime he starts |
steaming down the ice from his de-}
fense position started the scoring off
Sunday with play just over two min-
utes old. The game was knotted up
by Norberg on Gamponi’s pass, ‘and
the locals went into the lead with|
Norquay doing the honors. The Bears"
came surging back and finally closed
the gap with Ken ‘Silvers beating
MeNiven during a goal - mouth|
ae |

The Stamp first string opened the
second period scoring with Norberg
taking Camponi’s pass and flicking
the puck into the upper left hand
corner of the net, but the next two
scoring plays were all the visitors"
and actually wrapped up the game.

The Bears found their first br
when Vickie Carolan drew two min-
utes for tripping. The Stamps stalled
through part of the penalty, but the
play got behind their blue line just
the one time necessary to spell

up the play two ‘lake men went
sprawling and Ken Silvers made the
goal when he found himself right in
on MeNiven.

Just before the period end the
Stamps wound up an offensive play
from their own blueline that back-
fired when Hutchinson lost control
of the puck and Trask came roar-
ing in, picked up the rubber and went
on with only McNiven to beat.

Nine minutes of the final frame
went by before the Stamps evened
up the score again. Buchholtz sét up
the play when he followed the puck
into the opopsition corner and bat-
tled for possession with two of the
Bears before getting it clear and
passing out to Norquay who cleared
to Camponi for the counter. There
the game remained deadlocked unti!
Forsey’s big effort.

If any single man was mainly re-
sponsible for the Vanderhoof win it
was Dal Irvine, spare goalie for ‘he
Stamps. Dal took over when the
Bears’ regular custodian had to for-
get playing Sunday because of an
injured knee, and he was something
more than sensational. Dal had 28
shots directed his way compared to
34 on McNiven.

Missing from the Stamp line-up
was former coach Ed. McGibbon, who
was relieved of his duties last week
as Arena manager.

The Stamps have picked up an-
other defenceman though in Ken
Campbell. Although Ken hasn't play-
ed for seven years, he looked good on|
the weekend play: Al Camponi has
taken over the coaching job.

This weekend the home team tra-|
vels to Vanderhoot.

Warming up to his subject, the
school board’s advocate said he had
sat in on many arbitrations and the
teachers had always argued on the
advantage of tying the schedule to
the index. “While the index was go-.
ing up that’s all we heard,” Mr.
Washington asserted.

and termed the request ‘ridiculous.’

Referring to one of Mr. Spragge’s
salary comparisons made with the
engineering staff and similar’ types
of employees of the City of Vaneou-
ver and the B.C. Electric Company,
Mr. Washington said there was one
vast difference that had been over-
looked. Vancouver being a large hity
could afford to pay for the best men,
but they also had to ‘cut the mustard’
or they didn’t stay on the job. In
contrast to this, the speaker assert-
ed a person going into the teaching
profession just had to behave him-
self once established, and he had a
job for life.

One of the points raised by Mr.
Spragge in rebuttal was that only
half of the teachers on District 27
Staff in 1948 were still teaching
here, the inference being that any
statements attributed to \the group at
that time should not be binding on
those negotiating now.

The hearing did have the odd

Spragge went into a long discourse
on the definition of a teacher and the
many arduous responsibilities that
fell his lot, both inside, and outside
of school. The list was so long that
finally Mr. Washington interjected
“but Mr: Spragge when does he find
time to teach?”
