In addition a new port will have to be built at Nevinport on the Coral Sea to handle the shipment of coal to New Caledonia, Pakistan, Japan and CANADA. The article goes on to review the importance of this development in relation to the military situation in i the Pacific. “Regardless of the out- come of hostilities in Korea the Soviet army will remain intact, pre- senting a continued threat to the United States, Australia and others in the Pacific area. The Manchurian coal fields, plus Soviet exploitation of Chinese labour and industry, must be met. To do this the productive capacities of not only Australia but also Japan. and. the Phillipines can be employed to produce war mater!- als and supplies. To accomplish this those countries must have coal in vastly increased quantities. The source of that coal is deemed to be Blair Athol. All that is lacking is an adequate transportation system and port facilities.” WHO STANDS IN WAY?
