Wednesday, December 24, 1952 CASE TO BE APPEALED SS Pit Lamper Found Guiliy By Magistrate Gustaf Schneider, young DP from Germany was fined $500 or two months in default when he appeared before Stipendiary Magistrate J. D. Smedley in police court last week as the principal in the first ‘pit lamping” case to be tried in this district. In opening his case last Thursd: local lawyer Henry Lockwood w handled the prosecution for the Crown said he would attempt to Prove by a series of circumstances that the accused was guilty of the game act infraction although none of the ‘prosecution witneses had ac- tually seen the man clearly enough to identify him. The prosecution case was built around three main witnesses; Alex- ander and. Francis Macalister and Pearson. According to the ‘tes- timony, Alexander had just retired for the night about nine o'clock when he heard a shot from the di- a Sig three purebred bulls were kept. Rushing to.the window he saw a car parked by the side of the highway and a light beside the vehicle. He called out the window to his brother and Sig who were in another part of} the building to go after the ‘pit! lamper.” | The two men obeyed the summons and started down the short road in their car in an effort to cut off the vehicle-on the highway, but before they could make the crossing the person with the other car had drive2 off. The men continued the chase and nally passed the fleeing car three miles up the highway. They pulled ahead a ways.and stopped, Frances alighting with a flashlight in ap at- tempt to wave the driver of the other car down. He-was unsuccess- ful in the attempt but he did secure tle license number. The men took up the chase again and two miles far- ther on came upon the same car parked on the highway. They again checked the license and they drove up but as they got closer the ear pulled out and roared off into the night. The two men gaye up the chase and returned home. Subse- quent checking there showed that a doe deer had heen shot. Investization ed that the d belonged to William Ernst, who operates a saw- mill at Australian Creek, 23 miles north of Macalister. He testifiied that he had loaned the car that. night to Schneider, who works for him, The charge against the accusea was that on November 9th, after nine o'clock in the afternoon he un- lawfully hunted for light in his possession. Norman Fetterley of Quesnel ap- peared for defense and has lodged notice of appeal. The appeal will probably be heard in the latter game with a, the part ‘of January. Excerpts fromr Mr, Fulton’s speech dealing with the housing Problem follow: “Mr. Speaker, before I come to the Subjects with which I want to deal in the main part of my remarks to- day, there are one or two issues [ should like to mention briefly as they are of particular concern to my con- stituency. They are, I must admit, of concern elsewhere as well, but they are among those national issues country, N.H.A. ACT The first of these is a question of which mention was made in the Speech from the Throne, namely the Possibility of an amendment to the National Housing Act. Anyone who remembers the promises made by | the Liberals in the 1945 election, x house for every Canadian family, and then realizes how far short of their promises the housing program of the Liberal government has fal- len, will perhaps feel that I haye some justification when I say that there are grave doubts whether even the amendment to the National Housing Act which is now forecast will do what is necessary to meet the need. I have no knowledge of the situa- tion in any part of the country other than my own riding, but_I do know that in the city of Kamloops and in other towns and cities throughout my constituency there is no singie nature facing the people which is half as acute as the problem of secur- ing adequate housing accommo tion. It would not be so bad if this were a problem which was only of ort duration, one in which an em- gency or shortage had arisen sud- denly so the people migth hope it would be dealt with and that the problem would disappear as the re- sult of aggressive action by the gov- ernment. This is a problem that has continued and increased since 1945. The distress and the number of ; those requiring housing accommoy |dation have both increased every year, and in'my view there is noth. ing in the field of social legislation or social security generally which is half as important and urgent at the the need of providing moment as some means whereby the people of Christmas Greens Brighten Home A few well placed Christmas greens can do much to brighten a house at Christmas time, Properly clipped, the branches will never be missed, and might improve the looks of the tree from which they are cut. | Hemlock, red cedar, Juniper, yew, pitch pine, ,white pine, will ‘make ° Suitable material for a spray to decorate a mantle, door, or a spray ! for a newel post.
