Calf Club Member
Wins Top Steer
Award at Kamloops

KAMLOOPS—A model Hereford
steer, a picture by every Deef indus-
try standard, won the grand cham-
pionship of the Christmas Fat Stock
Show last Wednesday in competition
over two other Herefords and a
Shorthorn.

The steer was raised and exhibited
by Ronald Lyster of the armstrong
4-H Beef Calf Club. The reserve
grand championship was also won by
a 4-H clubber, going to 11-year-old
Jimmie Todrick of Westwold with
another near-perfect Hereford.

A Shorthorn steer, raised and ex-
hibited by A. & W. Watt of Barriere,
was placed third by Judge J. W
Grant MacEwan. The Shorthorn had
won the championship of the open
market cattle division.

Young Lyster, 19 years old, has
been aiming for the coveted grand
championship for nine years, bring-
ing fatted calves to the Kamloops
show from Armstrong over that time.

Jim Todrick’s rise to. fame was
meteoric. Last year was his first with
the Westwold club. Son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd Todrick of Westwold.
Jim has a brother, Robbie, anda sis-
ter, Marge.

When Judge MacEwan signified
the Todrick steer as winning the re-
serve grand championship, the: spee-
tators applauded furiously. The sight
of an §0-pound hoy leading a 940-
pound steer tickled their fancy.

Lone Butte News

THURSDAY at noon all of the
boys at the school were busy carry-
ing wood from the school to. the
community hall to replace fuel used
while occupying the hall for their
Christmas Concert practices.

SUNDAY December 7th, a flock of
geese were seen over Lone Butte.
Not winter yet.

RALPH DURST’S brother Eddie,
is now staying indefinitly with the
Dursts. Eddie hopes to make his
home here.

THE SCHOOL BOARD has finally
decided to dig a well at the schcol.

$78,732.12 while in 1951 217 cattle
sold for $84,727,85. ‘The average
price of stock per hundred-weight
this year was $26.71 while last year
the cattle sold at $38.41.

for 54 cattle and six lambs. Canada
Safeway Ltd., followed by paying
$16,766.46. Other major buyers
were Pacific Meat $9,029.16, Alberta
Meat $6,327.16, Swift Canadian

last year which was auctioned for
$665.70 at 70 cents per pound.

Last week's high fell below the 85
cents per pound paid the 1950 Grana
Champion shown by Nell Turner of
Salmon Arm and was well below the
$1.20 paid to Bobby Donchi, 1949
winner and brother of Ronald Don-
chi, who won in 1951.
~ The next highest price in the 1952
show went to 11-year-old: Jim Tod-
rick of Westwold. Canada Safeway
Ltd. paid $364.80 for Todrick’s 912
pound steer at 40 cents per pound.

Kamloops—Althovgh the selling prices of cattle at the
2 Christmas Fat Stock Show and Sale didn’t approach last
year’s excellent values, buyers this year well rewarded the
ranchers, young and old, for their efforts in raising stock to
the standards evident in this year’s show.

for $28.40 per ewt. A.C.T. Ranch fol-
lowed with Canada Packers purchas-
ing their lot at $27.25 per ewt.,
while Reserve Champion Bostock
Ranch Ltd. went at $26.75 per cwt.,
also to Canada Packers.

The Champion Group of 5, entered
by Haughton Brothers of Kamloops,
was bought by Canada Safeway at 28
cents per pound. Highest price paid
for a group of 5 was by Canada Safe-
way to the Reserve Champion Nicola
Lake Stock Farm. The Nicola group
of five sold at $28.50 per ewt.

Pat Shannon of Monte Lake got
$1.30 a pound for his 81-pound lamb
from Canada Packers.
