The livestock population in the Stangoe househdid has taken a decid- ed slump, and I'm heartbroken, Last Wednesday, Mrs. Fred Gra- ham and son David came over to claim Mamie’s kitten, a cute orange and white thing almost identical to its mother. We hated to see it go, but then we have always felt that w whenever it came time for Mamie's latest brood to leave the fold. The antics of kittens can keep me in stitches at any time, but add one small child — and you get a panic. It was hard to tell who got the worst of it. When the kitten first discovered there was a world outside of his cardboard box home and be- gan navigating on unsteady fee:, Elaine was fascinated by the phe- nomenon. Her first exploratory thrusts ended in slight scratches and much wailing on her part. But she soon became inured to this torture no matter how badly the kit- ten scratched, and delighted in pull- ing, hugging and otherwise mutilat- ing the animal. It was picked up by its tail, by a hunk of skin on its back. and by one leg. Her favorite trick was to pick it up by the head and offer it to either Clive or me with an enquiring “Da?", while we screamed “Elaine!! No! No ” and leaped to the rescue. The silly part was that after its eyes had gone back into their sockets, that kitten came right back for more punishment. It pulled threads in my brand new hostess chair, and it left a dank brown stain on the bathroom floor; but we still hated to see it go. Mamie was a good mother and stayed with her kitten.” She endured its rough-housing and even occasion- ally joined in the fun. Occasionally when young son got too tough, there. was a squeal when he was reprim- anded. She was good with Elaine too, to my amazement. Before the kitten’s advent, she had put up with much the same treatment and only retali- ated with a scratch once. I thought this was exceedingly good behaviour in a cat that was not used to chil- dren. The kitten left on Wednesday; on Thursday Mamie went out and did not return. I was worried as she had never stayed away before, but every morning I hoped that 1 would find her on the doorstep. It is now Monday night, and we know where Mamie is. SUES Fp DOES -IT-BETTER! She was four years old. She was with us when we made the momen- tous move up to Williams Lake. She rode with her brother, Mickey, on the back seat of the car all the way and then back down to New Wesr- minster and back again when we took our holidays that first year. She was a well-travelled cat. She and Mickey. were alternately enemies and good friends. Kor no apparent reason, Mamie wonld take a swipe at Mickey and Clive would say “Isn't that just like a woman?”, A few minutes later, she would be washing him as though to make up. I didn’t feel too badly last winter when we had to dispose of Mickey when he became ill. I was not as fond of him, and I still had Mamie. And now ... no Mamie.
