Prices Hold
At Big Sale

Concensus among cattlemen and
buyers appears to be that they were
quite satisfied with the new method
of selling that featured the weekend
cattle sale here when 1489 head of
cattle and 213 sheep were put
through the ring for a total gross of
$217,440.

Prices held steady at the sale and
several buyers seemed to think they
were about a cent higher than mar-
ket price,

Top prices paid out for grass fed
steers was $22.50 for two head con
tributed by Me! Mayfield. Top for
grain fed was $23.50 paid to Bil)
Stafford for two head. Huston Duna-
way’s two carloads of good steers
brought $22. ,

Generally speaking feeder steers
Grought from $17 to $19; fat steérs] ;
from $19 to $22; heifers from $15!
to $19; heiferettes from $14 to $16;
cows trom $10 to $13 and canners
from $6 to $9.

Heaviest buyer at the sale was
Bert Crawford of Swift & Company
who bought 235 head for $42,555.
Pacific Meat bought 202 head’ fer
$37,800 and Rus Phillips of Alberta
Meat bought 149 head for $23,150.

Two district ranches bought fairly
heayy on feeder offerings. Chilco
Ranch purchased 114 head for $13,-
313 and Circle S bought 95 head for
$14,793.

Principal contributors were Alkali
Lake, 40; A. Christensen, 51; A.
Knoll, 115; H. Dunaway 83 and
Fred Hinsche, 58 (50 of these were
calves).

Because of the large number of
head in the sale it was impossible to
put them through the ring in one
day. The sale started Saturday just
after 10 a.m. and by 4:30-in the
afternoon 690 head had been soid.

Four hundred children jammed

the floor space in the Elks Hall Fri-

day evening for their annual Hal-
lowe’en party.

The fact that most of the mothers
in town had been working for days
to outfit their youngsters for the
party was evident in the array of
original costumes. Probably some
fathers got into the act too if little
Harold Cunliffe’s special entry was
an indication. He was outfitted as an
engineer and pulled a wagon made
into a replica of an engine — the
PGE extension influence.

Judges for the contest, Dr. and
Mrs. H. K. Atwood, were stumped
timé and again as the various age
groups paraded in front of thei. 4s

the judging all of the children were
given a bag of candy and an apple
on leaving the hall.

Following the judging of the cos-
tumes the youngsters went over to
the Fire Hall to enjoy the fireworks
display. The night before the Fir2-
men had switched the showing time
of the display from before the hall
party to after it.

It was the Board of Trade’s hope
that Williams Lake would be well
enough to the forefront of the PGE",

would know our ‘Cowtown’ was
there. It is generally conceded that
this was accomplished.

Highlight of the Williams Lake
provision to the Celebration at
Prince George was the Mission Boys
Band. The 30 youngsters were won-
derful and the crowds loved them.

funds for their trip a special dance
was held last Friday by the Junior
Chamber of Commerce with the Col-
umbus Club donating the hall and
Vie Imhoff’s orchestra donating the
music. A total of $109 was raised.
At Prince the band was met by mem-
bers of the Junior Chamber of that
city and were sat down to a hot meal.

The main parade at Prince George,
which was led by the Legion Band
and included floats, children in cos-
tume and the William$ Lake-Quesnel-
Prince George massed band under
the baton of Tony Woodland,
well out of sight by the time the lo-
calites got their part of the parade
in order.

Finally everyone was assigned a
placard bearing a letter that would
spell out ‘Williams Lake,’’ and our
own parade moved off, with the hoys.

And just in case Prince George
residents forgot to cheer for the
local effort or perhaps failed to re-
alize where we were from, Benny
Abbott, Clive Stangoe and Bob Blair

shook hands with everyone so in-
clined. Arriving at the arena the
band was led around the crowded
building and then moved over to the
Civie Centre for the children’s pro-

gram.

But Williams Lake still wasn’t
through. The Rube Band couldn't
get enough insirumentalists togeth<r

to represent a locomotive.

Originally the car was supposed to
be waiting for the band at the sta-
tion, but it was found still in a box-
car at the south‘end of the bridge so
some of the party had to .go over,
unload it and drive it back to town.

As an attention-getter the delay
worked out alright though. By the
time the jalopy wheeled on to the
main street, bucking from curb to
curb and emitting dense black smoke,
normal traffic had resumed and the

whisper.

The local contingent wasn’t with-
cut signs either. Johnny Erickson
provided two that ran the whole
length of two cars. They were 2t-
tached to the train at Quesnel.

If there was any cue given,‘ our
local commissioners missed it when
the time came for a representative
from Williams Lake to extend greet-
ings at the arena ceremonies in the
afternoon. However Tony Woodland
stepped into the spot and made a
creditable appearance.

From that point on the Williams
Lake contingent took in the enter-
tainment provided. There were three
large banquets in the evening and a
gigantic fireworks display. A street
dance was getting underway when
the train left.

Not all of the passengers on the!
inaugural run to Prince George were
boisterous in their celebration of
the event. Spotted along the coaches
were pioneers, many of whom were
taking in the event with a quiet air
of satisfaction that years of political
promises had at least resulted in two
ribbons of steel being laid to Prince
George.

5000 Meet PGE Train at Prince

Residents of Three Centres
Join In Historic Celebration

The inaugural run over the Pacific Great Eastern Rail-
way company’s Quesnel-Prince George extension will be one

that will be long remembered

At Prince George an estimated
crowd of 5000 people were on hand
to cheer the inaugural train as it
moved into the CNR station, with a
ON engine havling the PGE’s two
large diesels.

For the 60 Williams Lake passen-
gers, the reception at Prince marked
the half-way point of a long, some-
times tiring and generally boisterous
trip.

At 3:30 Saturday morning the 14-
car special slipped into the local
station and town passengers tuok
over two empty cars. Some of them
had come straight from the dance
held at Columbus Hall Friday aight,
held to raise funds for the Mission
Boys Band, and the station platform
was also crowded with people see-
ing the passengers off. Maurice Bour-
geois had his guitar with him and
while the train waited for departure
time a dance was held on the plat-
form.

TO QUESNEI,

At 4 o'clock the special pulled out
for the run north, arriving at day-
break at Quesnel. There the train
was met by the Quesnel band, its
members looking far from comfort-
able as they played in the frosty at-
mosphere. Here Premier Bennett got
off the train and was introduced to
many of the people on the platform.

With another 60 people from
Quesnel the train travelled on to
Ahbau Creek, scene of the spike-
driving ceremony.

Ahbau proyed a bit of a surprise
for most peopie. When construction
of the line was on the emphasis was
placed on Cottonwood Bridge, but
the one at Ahbau must run it a close

bridge the passengers alighted and
the train pulled back down the track
to allow room for a Jamieson Con-
struction train to move‘in carrying

With the crowd now swelled to
600 people, preparations were made
for the spike driving ceremony.

PREMIER SPEAKS

From an open observation car
Premier Bennett delivered a- brief
address from a prepared text. He
was introduced by Hon. Ralph Chet-
wynd, Minister of Railways.

Said the Premier in part: “Toda
marks the opening of a new era [or
this part of British Columbia, which
is an empire in itself. I am confident
that the expansion of this area, along
with the Peace River Country,
through agriculture, forestry, min-
ing, water power, oil, natural gas and
industry in general is only its be-
ginning and holds out greater prom-
ise of development and expansion
than any other part of the North
American continent.”

Following the Premier’s address
the official party descended from the
observation car for the spike driving.

At the planer mill of Columbia
Valley Lumber company about five |
thousand feet of lumber was strewn
around the yard and a heavy Loder-
mobile was driven over the lumber
causing an éstimated $200 worth of
damage. Police are investigating.

Carelessness with firecrackers re-
ulted in the awning in front of The
‘tribune office catching fire early ia
the evening. About 7:30 a group of
youngsters went down the
letting off the firecrackers and Len
iminutes later passerby Miss Madeline
‘ullerton noticed flames in the rolled
awning and rushed upstairs to the
apartment above the office to warn
owner Clive Stangoe.

He opened the office and brought
out an extinguisher to douse the
flames and Les Pigeon brought one
trom the store of Western Rife &
Vigeon to assist. Loss was confined

to the awning estimated at around
$75.
Other than those two incidents,

damage was mostly confined to lost
ates and broken fences. Some one
with a bucket of light blue paint
worked over some of the town fire
hydrants and the door haridles of
the theatre. Police caught one group
of youngsters scattering piles of
lumber in the yard of H. J. Gardner
and Sons. and the joke backfired
when the lumber scatterers had to
send an hour and a half rebuilding
the piles under police supervision:

pened however was that the tight
knot of dignitaries and others who
could crowd on the railway embank-
ment effectively hid from view any-
thing of the ceremony at all.

After the ceremony was over the
passengers climbed aboard the train
again, this time their numbers aus-
mented by the 300 people who hat
made the trip down from Prince. 11
was a happy and crowded trip into
Prince and as the train moved across
the bridge into the city hundreds of
caressounded their horns to gree!

Following the afternoon and eve-
ning celebrations at Prince George
the train pulled out at 9 p.m. leay-
ing from the south side of the Fraser
an hour later.

Passengers kept up the celebia-
tion on the way home.

In ease of an overflow crowd, the

company had placed three extra
baggage - cars in the front of the
train and these were lined with

benches. Only one of them was used
to accommodate the overflow and a
dance started up in the front car.
This went on all the way down to
Quesnel when the impromptu band
lost most of its members.

For most of the Williams Late
passengers the late hours weve bee
ning to take their toll by now au.

down.-considerably. The train arrived
back in town about 6:45 Sunday
morning.
