WINTER AND SPRING TICKS
AND THEIR CONTROL

Of the 20 kinds of ticks occurring
in British Columbia, only two are of
importance to ranchers, says J. D.
Gregson, Livestock Insect Labo:
tory, Kamloops. These are the win-
ter ticks and the spring, or paralysis
tick. The winter tick passes the win-
ter months on horses and deer and
may infest them in such large num-
bers as seriously to weaken or even
kill them. The spring tick is a com-
mon pest of cattle and sheep in the
interior of British Columbia during
April, when it frequently paralyzes
its victims. Not only may numbers of
animals be killed by this tick, but
also valuable spring pastures may
be sacrificed because of its presence.
Studies at the Kamloops laboratory
have lately indicated that protection
from these ticks may be obtained by
the use of certain insecticides.
Distributions in Canada

The winter tick occurs across the
whole of Canada and is particularly
plentiful in northern areas, where
it is a natural parasite of deer and
moose. The spring tick is most abun-
dant in the drybelt of British Colum-
bia and in southern Alberta, but it
occurs as far east as southern Sas-
katchewan.

Descriptions

The stage of each of these ticks
most familiar to ranchers is that of
the engorging female. At this time
the tick is grey and
When fully engorged the female may
be a little more than an eighth of an
inch long. It is then reddish-brown
with a white patch at the head end.
The male, which never engorges, is a
mottled gray. Both the flat and the
engorged forms of the immature

bean-shaped.

stages are smaller and resemble the
adult ticks.
Life History

The spring tick is found on grass
slopes and scrub-covered rangeland
trom March to June, depending on
the climate of the area. There the
adults wait on grass and twigs
for passing cattle, sheep, man, and
dogs. After being brushed on to a
host they craw rapidly up to the head
and shoulders, giving the false idea
that they have dropped from trees.
After painlessly puncturing the skin
with a small mouth part, they remam
attached and feed for about seven
days. It is towards the end of this
period that they may paralyze their
host. Though this paralysis may pro-
gress until it kills an animal, the
effects usually disappear rapidly as
soon as the ticks are removed. The
engorged female drops from the!
host and lays several thousand eggs.
These later hatch into tiny larvae, or
“seed” ticks.

Control

Until recent years there was no
satisfactory control of these ticks. It
has now been shown that UHC (ben-
zene hexachloride) is very effective
for this purpose.

The spring tick can be killed by
dusting infested animals with a BHC
dust containing 0.5 percent of the
gatima isomer’ (the powder that is
used for the control of the carrot rust
fly), or preferably a BHC spray con-
taining 0.3 per cent gamma isomer.
This strength may be obtained by
adding 6 ounces of 50 per cent wet-
table BHC (7 per cent gamma isomer )
to each gallon of water. The spray is
best applied to the head and shoul-
ders of each animal before the stock
are turned on to infested range.

The spray is preferable to a dust
because it is easier to apply to the
larger number of animals that are
often involved in spring tick control.
Furthermore, the greater lasting ef-
fect of the spray compared with that
of the dust is desirable, since stock
may be exposed to fresh adults of
this tick for as long as four weeks.
If desired, the BHC powder may be
