Page 6 = THE TRIBGNH, WILLPAnS BARE, 8.8, Thursday, August 14, 1pea, NOR ACY How can anyone think when the Weather is so hot, hot, hot? Added to the already suffocating air outside, we have the delights of living in an upstairs apartment close to the roof and the glorious sun. Come winter and 40 below, I know I will be regretting the above sarcas- tic remarks and wondering if I will ever be warm again. But right now, sitting in my damp, sticky clothes with complete inertia threatening to overtake mé, I'd give anything for 2 wintery blast. We were feeling puffed up over our garden a few weeks ago when sun- dry other gardeners were amazed at the profusion of bloom already evi- dent in our back yard. From all re- Ports our stocks and snapdragons were the first to bloom in town. But alas it also means that those self-same stocks and snaps have had it by now, so we Will have no entries if’ those sections for the Fall Fair Not that we expected to win really, but you never know. Guess there's a chance for the rest of you now. Can’t someone — the Mounties, the Village Commissioners, the Pro- vincial or Federal governments or the United Nations do something It is not allowed in the big cities, why do we -have to put up with it here? While Clive went on a fishing trip to distant Cliarlotte Lake last week- end, I went on a picnic with friends to Macleese Lake. "Oh we remembered the bread this time, but due to a misunderstanding about who was to take what, we end- ed up with plenty of food but no knives, forks and spoons. The only utensil between six of us was‘one baby spoon. Rescue came in the shape of Mrs, W. Ferris, picnicking nearby wit her family, who loaned us the neces- sary implements. Never a dull moment on our picnics! The trouble with having visitors, the kind you like and enjoy of course, is that they must eventually depart If they are the type like my Mother and a family friend who stayed ter days with us recently, it is doubly hard. For ten days I hardly washed or dried a dish, or swept a floor. I mau- aged to struggle through the wash- ing, but the ironing was miraculous- ly done without any effort on my part. I have about ten jars of jam that I remember picking the berrice for, but there my responsibility ended. ‘Twas a great life while it lasted But then they were goneleaving a blank hole for a few days, until I got organized once more. ee et A distinguished product of the BRITISH COLUMBIA DISTILLERY WITH IRENE | ] Even the baby missed them. Unromantic Check Kept On Marriages The marriage laws contain many interesting and unkown facts, states an article in “B.C’s Health,” bullet. of the Department of Health ar Welfare. For example, how many | people know thai Marriages have to be performed in a room with “open doors’? The strange law comes from an old English law saying that hear- ing of banns, solemnization of mar- riages, and all judicial hearings must be open to the public; that is, in a room with “open doors.’ Anyone with an objection must be allowed to have his say. People who plan to get married in an aeroplane had better forget the idea. A marriage in an aeroplane in flight would not be easily accessibic to the public and probably not legai. Nor is it legal to be married in any Place which charges admission, such as in a theatre during a performance or at a private ciub. This violates tho “open door’ clause. What about being married in the middle of the night by a Marriage Commissioner? Again, this wou.d not be legal, for civil Marriages cau be performed only between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Religious ceremonies have no such restrictions, as they depend on the customs of each church. 4 a Linen. much of it treated to crease-resistant finishes and other improvements, is again a big spring and summer success, and appears in some especially fashion-wise sepa- rates. Crease-resistant Irish linen is used for a two-cone blouse and skirt mix-match costume, each piece just as good on its own, The blouse can be buttoned up close below the small, demure collar. Slant-wise flapped pockets and cuffed short sleeves are other details. The skirt, self-belted and gored, is in a deeper tone with slit pockets at the hips. Tea Honours Departing Resident Mrs. C.
