By that time you should have heard the messages of the candidates offering their names, and you should be able to formulate a definite opinion on who you think will best represent us in Victoria. Excluding the C.C.F., we have few qualms about the future of our province, regardless of which of the three re maining parties should be given the mandate to form the next government. Essentially they stand for the free enterprise system that has brought us to the enviable position we hold in the Canadian scene today. We don’t hold to the theory expressed in a coast daily inferring that British Columbia would rapidly go to the dogs if the Liberals were not returned to power. It is our belief that the Progressive-Conservative party, for example, has men in its group equal in ability to those who stand for the principles of Liberalism. We still think the Social Credit party remains something of a dark, horse. One of the unfortunate things about their make-up is the fact that they have no leader. We know their reasoning behind this fact is their theory that their elected M.L.A.’s should have the right to pick their own leader, But we believe that behind this reasoning is the feeling among the rank and file that the right man has not appeared. It could be disastrous if the party did receive the necessary majority only to find the right man still wasn’t among the group of M.L.A.’s. Should the Socreds be placed in power it will be by a pro- test vote, and undoubtedly many of the party’s candidates are running under the Social Credit banner for the same reason, and not because they believe in the vague monetary reforms that the first Alberta party embraced. This brings us to the Cariboo candidates themselves, and here the decision is harder to make. 3 If you are the type of voter who hews to the party line you will probably have no doubts, but looking at the men as individuals is another question. In the case of Angus MacLean, there is his past record. Frankly, we believe that he could have done a better job of representing the Cariboo — but you the voter know the record as well as we — and you should be able to form your own opinion. Ken Thibaudeau and Ralph Chet- wynd are still largely unknown quantities to the voters in the south. Your opinion of their ability will have to be formed on their public appearances and utterances. We have not dealt in any detail with the C.C.F., because we believe the trend of support is self-evident. In these days of tremendous provincial growth we do not see how any think- ing person can st:bscribe to the theories of socialism without being aware of tlge dangers their a tion would bring to the fore.
