With the’ es- tablishment of a pulp mill in Ques- nel, and the demand for increased bower by industry, sawmills, mines, as well as by the City of Prince George, the villages of Williams Lake, Quesnel and their surrounding areas, I fail to see why the govern- ment should have any hesitation in Proceeding with this power project. I urge this government or any suc. ceeding government to. give this matter serious consideration. Our economy in Cariboo not only needs it, but demands it, = ROAD SITUATION “Let me now refer to our road situation in Cariboo. Again going back to 1949, I was told that the Cariboo Highway which was then under construction, and still is, would be completed to Prince George by 1 1952 is now here, Madam Speaker, and we are still ap. proximately 160 miles from the en of pavement to the City of Prince George. I may say that the Cairboo Highway within thé boundaries of| my consituency has been sadly neg- lected for the past two years. PGE LINK | “Let me now express my disap- poiutment in the government for not proceeding with the construction of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway from Squamish to North Vancouver. The government must be aware of the tremendous volume of material! that is now straining the present! facilities of the PGE, and while the! bottleneck at-Squamish remains, this railway cannot hope to operate ata profit. The Powell River Pulp & Paper company are now hauling pulp logs on this railway from Ques- nel to Squamish at the rate of nin2 carloads a day, and it is expected that the number of logs hauled daily will be greatly increased in ihe near future.
