Of interest to the distriet was the
marriage July 5th of Margaret Sarah
Henn, second eldest daughter of Mr.

Orville E. Stowell, eldest son of Mr.

Creek.

St. Andrew's United Church manse
was the scene of the ceremony which
was performed by Rev. J. Colclough
at 2 pm.

A tailored blue gabardine suit with
white accessories was chosen by the
bride. Her corsage was fashioned of
pink carnations.

Mrs. Gordon Woods, who attended
the bride, wore a navy suit with white
accesories enhanced by a corsage of
pink carnations.

Mr. Gordon Woods of Meldrum
Creek acted as best man.

Mr, and Mrs. Stowell will make
their home at Meldrum Creek.

We were fortunte in being guests
of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cornwall at
the Onward Ranch Saturday night
and being privileged to hear Mr. 1a
Schwartz, well-known pianist, render
many enjoyable selections ranging
from Chopin to Debussy.

As usual. after hearing some talent-
ed person, I felt ashamed of my own
mediocre efforts and resolved to do
more practising. I know that these
feelings seldom Jast long, but I feel
very noble and conscientious at the
time. ,

So, on Sunday morning, I fished
out “Clare de Lune” and attempted
to make it sound the delightful com-

in our family, I was missed complete-
ly. Although my father rarely played
during his later years, he was quite
the child prodigy at one time and ap-!

My sister and I started taking
piano lessons at the same time, but at
| the time of her death. she was several

years ahead of me in ability and com-
positions. My brother is one of those
Jelever people who can’t read a note

of music, but can sit down and play
all evening. Nothing is more annoying
or discouraging than to have him ask
me “What is this chord, Irene?” —
and then continue playing the ‘piece

‘by ear far better than I can with the
' music.

Then I have a cousin who took les
sons from the same teacher for about
the same length of time. SHE has
has played in an orchestra for many
years. A couple of other relatives, al-
though they are not accomplished
musicians, are able to pick out com-
positions by ear in a few minutes or
to vamp along with someone as an
accompaniment.

It takes me about a week of prac-
ticing to pick out a simple tune with-
out the music to aid me,

Usually the aforementioned talent-
ed people can’t understand why I
| don’t instinctively know which note
| to play without a moment’s hesita-
|tion, as they do, And on the other side
Jare the people who can’t play
instrument but have heard that
do, and can’t.understand why you
can’t just sit down to the piano and
play, with or without music. Or if
you are playing as an accompaniment
for singing, why you can’t lower the
tone a few notes,

Like many other people, I too get
exasperated at musicians who have
to be coaxed to play. But pity the pour
pianist who rushes up to perform at
|the drop of a hat, stumbles through
his repertoire only to find a much
more accomplished player (such as
@ Mr, Schwartz) among the assembled

I suppose there must be many good
musicians in the world who haven't
the “ear” for music, and :t is this
knowledge that has spurred me or
several occasions to take a few more
lessons and practise assiduously for
a few mere months.

The last time was when we bought
our own piano (on the “fifty easy In-
stallment” plan). Carefully 1 practis-
ed “runs’ and “fiill-ins” that are so
necessary in popular music today
until I could play a number of pieces
quite well. But unfortunately I can

Cook’s Nook

Mrs. R. Piltz of Manitoba has come
to the rescue this week, and sent in
several delicious recipes. Of the first
one she says, “The following recipe I
made many times while living in Big
Creek and one the men enjoyed.”

Tomato Swiss Steaks.
2 Ibs. round steak
4 tbsp. dripping
4 tbsp. flour
2 medium onions
1 cup strained tomatoes
% cup sliced carrots!
Salt and peper to taste

Mix flour with salt and pepper and
Pound into meat with edge of plate.
Cut\ the meat and place in hot drip-
ping. Add cut-up onions, carrots and
tomatoes, Cover closely and bake in

mioderate oven 350 deg. about one
hour or until tender,
And here is a dessert that Mrs.

Piltz says is very nice for company
and easy to make too. ~*
“Cherry Slice
1cup flour mixed with
cup butter

Press into 8x8 baking dish and bake

until set.
2 tbsp. flour
ltsp. baking powder
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup raisins
% cup cherries
2 well-beaten eggs.

Mix all of the above ingredients
together and pour onto the flour and
butter mixture after it has been bak-
ed, Put back in oven and continue
baking 35-40 minutes. This may be
iced with a butter icing. but is very
nice just as it is.

I guess we all have an inborn de

not many of us can qualify. Remem-

|lessons!" Don't you believe it!

As far as I’m concerned, it’s a mat-
ter of “some has it, and some hasn't”
and I can only console myself with
the fact that I have a lot of company
in the latter field.
