100-MILE HOME

Fire of undetermined origin that
broke out in the early hours of Tues-
day morning, totally destroyed the

| home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Scott,

100 Mile.

Acording to reports, the fire broke
out about four a.m. Mr, Scott was not
home at the time and his wife awak-
ened to the crackling of flames. She
was only able to push out a washing
machine and a sewing machine be-
fore the flames forced her to escape
herself.

<The Scotts are at a loss to gucss
how the fire started as there hadn't
been a fire in the- kitchen range
since six o'clock,

MR. and MRS. F. C. KELLOGG,
who have been here staying with Mz.
and Mrs. Bud Gibbons this last week,
‘and visiting friends around the neigh-
borhood, left Thursday afternoon for
Williams Lake. They will make a trip
to Prince George before returning to
their home at La Jolla, California.

IRA S. JONES left for his home in
Vancouver Sunday after a very suc-
cessful grizzly hunt.

MRS. IKE HUBBARD of the Red
Jacket Lodge on Little Horsefly is
back bome again after being absent
all winter.

PHILIP BOURELLE has bought
the old MacHachern place and 15
moving his family up. They will be
living in temporary quarters while
they build their new home.

MR. and MRS. BUD GIBEONS, Mr.
and Mrs. Stan Barrett, S. B. Hooker,
Jack Graham, John Larson and Te
King all attended the trappers meet-
ing at Williams Lake on Tuesday.

JACK GUNN was a visitor to Wil-
liams Lake Tuesday.

are home again, after spending the

winter in Vancouver, where Mr. Gold-
smith has had to undergo an eye oper-
ation and treatments.

THE NEIGHBORS gave a “Wel-
come Home” party for Lottie and
George Goldsmith, and a most enjoy-
able evening was spent in dancing.
The teen-agers especially enjoyed the
square dances, and Mac, our caller-
off, taught us some new stuff along
that line.

SHIRLEY SANDBERG, Ethel, and
Beatrice Kinvig came home for the
weekend again.

MOUNTAIN RACE
POPULAR FEATURE
SINCE FIRST IN '20

Interest remains high in that fea-
ture event of the Stampede that winds
up the last day’s events — the Moun-
tain Race, s

This year there are nine entries and
the race will be: held in two heats
Friday afternoon. Six horses in the
race is considered the maximum num-
ber to run the difficult course with
safety. This race was first held here
in 1923, the third showing of the Wil-
liams Lake Stampede.

Last September, the man who laid
out the course, Jo Flieger, who is now
living in Arizona, wrote to R. C. Cot-
ton giving him some of the details of
those first runnings of the race.

“The first Mountain Race I ever
heard of,” Mr. Flieger writes, “was
down at Omak, Washington. Then
Kelowna had one at their Stampede. I
went down to see this in the fall of
1922. It thrilled me so that when I
came back I talked it over with Jim-
mie Smith. (Well-known manager of
those early’shows who later lost his
life in an accident on the grounds)
about us having one at the ‘lake as
it was the ideal setup for one.

“I rode up the mountain across
from the grandstand and picked out
the best trail to follow so as to give
the paying customers a good view of
the race.

“In 1923 we had our first Mountain
Race. I won it on Eagle very easily; a
man from Washington was second.

“This race created a lot of interest
in the Stampede, and the following
year there were. Indians from all over
entered in the race .

“Ollie Curtis (our present Stam-
pede Association secretary, Mrs. Ollie
Norberg) ran in it this time: I s
Dan Weir was in it alea-¥™ won it
again on Eagle, but it was the wild-
est ride I ever took anyplace.

“In 1925 I’did not run. Eddie Bam-
brick won it that year. The following
year I entered again and won.

“I give all the credit to, dear old

ridden in any man’s country.”

Take Road Detour,

|End Up In Lillooet

Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Liedteke of
Olympia, Washington, take a dim view
of the detour signs that are situated
on the highway work near Cache
Creek.

By taking the detour they somehow
managed to get on the Marble Can-
yon road and eventually wound up in
Lillooet before discovering they woutd
never reach Williams Lake on the
road they were on.

To make matters worse the Lied-
tekes were travelling at night, and
never having driven on narrow moun-
tain roads, the trip was not exactly
the tourists’ idea of highway travel.

The couple are visiting with Mr.

MR. and MRS. DERFELT and their
two small children came to Bayliffs’,
where the former are employed, last
week. They spent eighteen months at
Alkali Lake following their trip from
Austria as Displdced Persons, before
coming to Redstone.

BILL WOODS took his horses into
his lodge at Whitewater Lake Thurs-
day. R. Mulvahill is taking the truck
in now too.

MR. and MRS. F. Shillaker brought
their two children down to the Red
Cross hospital Thursday, to be vaccin-
ated. The Public Health Nurse was
out from Williams Lake.

MR. and MRS. J. D. Bliss made a
trip to town on Friday.

BILL BLISS went to Big Creek on
Wednesday to finish cutting the logs
he started cutting on the previous
trip. They are for Frank and Duane
Witte. —

MISS HILDA FRENCH of Kleena
Kleene is on a holiday at Vancouver
now. She is expected back soon.

MISS MARY TAYLOR, former gov-
erness at Lees, will be coming to take
up duties at the home of Mr, and Mrs.

T. P. Morgan on the 9th of June. ©
