Significantly, it was the first
occasion that the AFL has taken
the initiative in any move for
unity of action. Passage ofthe
resolution by a big majority of
the 80 delegates present marked
anew stage in the AFL’s position
toward what many of the “old

/guard” have termed a “dual or-

ganization.’ There was opposi-
tion to the unity proposal. But it
was without influence in the
final decision, which now actual-
ly leaves the CCF as the only
major labor group in the pro-
vince not only outside the trend
toward unity but openly opposed.

Some indication of what the
provincial AFL’s position on
unity actually means in relation
to the other problems facing
labor can be seen in the score of
other progressive resolutions in-
troduced and approved by the
two-day conference. Among the
200 odd resolutions on a host of
subjects aproved, delegates also
endorsed:

e Affiliation of the Trades
and Labor Congress with the
World Federation of Trade
Unions.

@ Setting up of a provincial
AFL central organization under
the Trades Congress similar to
the BCFEederation of Labor
established over a year ago by
the CCL unions in B.C.

@ The 40-hour week, with no
reduction in take-home pay.

@ Closer working unity be-
tween organized labor and the
Canadian Legion, :.with special
attention to the problems cf re-
turning servicemen.

e A 50 percent increase in un-
employment insurance benefits,
and extension of those benefits
to cover longshoremen and do-

mestics. _

AFL Convention Urges Congress
Join World Trade Union Body

The long fight for united action between the American Federation of Labor and
Canadian Congress of Labor unions in B.C. took a big step ahead last weekend with
the decision of the B.C. conference of the Trades and Labor Congress to seek a ‘‘joint
delegation of the AFL and CCL to present Jabor’s legislative program to the cabinet be-
fore the next provincial session.’ ,

Royal City .
Strike

Sixty employees of the Key-
stone Lumber and Shingle Com-
pany Mills, in New Westminster,
went on strike this week, in an
effort to force the company to
sign a union agreement with the
International Woodworkers of
America, Local 1-357.

Prior to taking strike action,
Local and -District officers ex-
plored every legal to
bring about a peaceful settle-
ment of the dispute. The com-
pany, which had _ previously
smashed two strikes of this
union, is well known for its anti-
union policy, which it has pur-
sued for many years.

Harold Prichet, District Presi-
dent IWA, warned that if at-
tempts are made to introduce’
police to intimidate strikers, or
to run scabs through the pocket
lines, pickets will be reinforced
from other locals. He recognized
the strike as a test of the union
strength that will shape up as
important in the future.

Negotiations were opened with
the management of the mill for
acceptance of the IWA’s indus-
try-wide agreement. After sev-
eral attempts to negotiate, Mr.
Beach, company head, refused to

the efforts of the union to come
to~settlement were without avail.

A concilliation board was es-
tablished under the Labor Code,
and board submitted a unani-
mous recommendation that the
company sign the agreement. The
