This week finds us in receipt of a healthy
batch of 31 subs from Victoria.
Shouldice, their drive chairman, informs us
that this is only the beginning, “that they
intend to take all comers to town in their
campaign to double their circulation for P.A.
A really nice beginning, Victoria !
Club are right out there in front and still
going strong — while Duncan, Kelowna,
and Prince Rupert are swinging into action
on their press drive dances which will coin-
cide with the big P.A. dance on December
19 at the Boilermakers’ Hall. The tickets are

Among the local clubs the East End,
under the chairmanship of Bill Hreherchuk,
is clicking right along with close to 200
percent of their sub quota, while Grand-
view, under- the chairmanship of veteran
“Paddy” Roberts,
up the highest score, with a renewal per-
centage that beats all records in press drives.
Speaking of renewals, we would like to hear
from all clubs on their work in this respect.
~ We would like to have the cards
_ returned to this office with a report.
Next week we would like to run the
pictures of some outstanding press
workers, so let us hear from all clubs
as to whom is out there in front.
And don’t forget—the best yet—is
what we have to do in this drive !

fuse the entire issue by question:
ing the integrity_of the lead-
ers of the newly-for ca Indo-
nesian :Republic. ey

HISTORY OF STRUGGLE

But the facts are that the in-
movement of the
Dutch East Indies has deep
roots among the Indonesian peo-
ple, and a 40-year history of
struggle against Dutch imperial-
ism.

Indonesia’s~ fight against col-
onial oppression began with the
opening of the century,’ first..as
a religious movement 2among. the
Moslems. ‘But in a short: time
left-wing =labor and ‘political
groups merged with the*Moslem
movement ‘and by 19175. these
groups had evolved a’ program
independence. By
1926, under the leadership of
the Communist:Pariy, the Indo-
nesian peoplé’ had developed
their independence movement to
the point of a general uprising
which. was, however, crushed,
with ‘some 13800 of its leaders
exiled or jailed. Again in. 1932
there was evidence of the extent
of the struggle in the mutiny by
Indonesian seamen of units of
the Dutch fleet based at Soera-
baja.

THE “NATIONAL”
GOVERNMENT

Conquest of the islands by the
Japanese, almost without. oppos-
ition from the corrupt Dutch ad-

ministration, indirectly gave the
Indonesian independence. fighters
their opportunity. Japan estab-
lished a “protected” national
government under Achmed So-
ekarno. Withinza»short. time this
government began: to fight
against Japanese rule, utilizing
its position to.develop its own

strength. Immediately . following
V-J  Day,.- Soekarno._ adminis-
tration emerged:-as. the. -only

dominant .force in the Dutch In-
dies, and proclamation .of the
republic followed shortly after.

The Indonesian Republic might
have been crushed very quickly,
however, without the quick -ac-
tion of the Australian labor
movement in clamping a “hot
eargo” ban on all ships carrying
men and material to Java.

Australian labor’s action may
yet be recognized as the decid-
ing.factor in the Indonesian peo-
ple’ s-fight for freedom: The feel-
ing against the Dutch is so in-
tense in Sydney that Dutch sol-
diers being -routed» to Indonesia
cannot come ashore. Austrailian
soldiers, sailors and airmen are
organizing demonstrations and
picketing British ships destined
for Java, while the crew of the
British naval auxiliary ship
Moreton Bay this week walked
off the ship just before it was
too sail with 1600 Dutch soldiers.

SCORE LABOR GOVT.

Meanwhile Australian workers
are expressing increasing disgust
at the British Labor government,
whose sending of British troops
and supplies to Indonesia is play-
ing ‘thé game of the: British and
Dutch-tory imperialists, and in-
Girectly of the American imperial-
ists,..whose intervention to date
has been confined mainly to sup-
plying U.S. equipment for Dutch
colonial forces, but whose -inter-
ests are known to.lie in'the direc-
tion of breaking the existing
Dutch-British monopoly of the
vast tin and rubber resources of
both Malaya and the Dutch: East
Indies.

The Netherlands government
offer of modified colonial status
for Indonesia, under which. she
would be given membership in
a Netherlands Commonwealth,
with a central government in the
Indies headed by. a representa-
tive of the Dutch crown, did not
alter the situation.

The Indonesians were not im-
pressed by the offer, which pro-
mised much but conceded little.
They took the position that the
Dutch were not going to be per-
mitted to walk back into Indo-
nesia with all their old imperial-
ist paraphernalia which inflict-
ed the worst kind of exploitation
on the native peoples.

As it stands now, British mil-
itary power may succeed -in. cap-
turing some of the main centers
in Java. It may even succeed in
drowning the independence in
blood. :

But British intervention will
never crush those forces in In-
donesia which have developed
out of the -independence -move-
ment, and which will- yet: lead
the 70 million people of. the
Dutch Indies to complete -free-
dom: from colonial oppression.—
