PEOPLE’S VOICE FOR PROGRESS Vol. 1, No. 32 > 5 Cents VANCOUVER, B.C., SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 1945 Truman Act Supported By Labor The entire labor movement — the United States is taunchly supporting the ocial security bill. recently ntroduced into the Congress. The President, ina message to she U.S. Gongress on the present amployment crisis, warned that she lack of adequate unemploy- ment benefits is a “major gap in dur reconversion program” and alled upon the House and Sen- ite to act quickly “to prevent a harp decline in consumer expen- litures which might otherwise sesult in a downward spiral of ‘onsumption and production.” “The transition from war to “peace is part and parcel of the war,” he added, “and we can- ‘mot shirk our obligation to those temporarily unemployed through no fault of their own.” . Truman pointed out that the three ‘major flaws in present state laws are the lack of pro- ection for federal workers, em- asloyees of small business, and maritime workers; the inade- quacy of ‘weekly benefit pay- ments; and the short period of sime for which benefits are paid. fo correct these defects Truman zalled for legislation providing protection for those workers not now covered, the raising of pay- ments to a maximum of $25.00 a week, and the extension of pay- ments to at least 26 weeks. The pending legislation, which preceded the President’s message by a few days, calls for for the establishment of a national so- cial insurance system covering health, unemployment and tem- porary disability; a 10-year fed- eral program for’ the construc- tion and expansion of hospitals and other health services; feder- al grants for broadening health Services; extension of social se- curity to include farm and dom- estic workers, employees of non- pao. organizations, profession- als and small businessmen; 1 coubiebient of a national system of publi - ee public employment ONTARIO VOTE A WARNING» Election Of Tories Shows Need For Coalition To Ensure Reaction’s Defeat The Progressive-Conservatives under Col. George Drew, backed by all the-power of reactionary big money in Canada, were made a gift of the On- tario Government on Monday by a combination of factors, all stemming from the main cause—a split in the labor and reform vote.brought about by the isolationist, anti-unity policy of the CGF. Anti-Unity Stand In a ringing denunciation of the narrow partisan policies by means of which-the CCF aided in the defeat of progress in Ontario and threatened the future of the nation in the com: ing federal elections, Fergus McKean, LPP Provincial Leader, outlined the dangerous consequences of CCF adventurism in a radio broadcast over station Pointing out that the vicious high-pressure propaganda cam- paign conducted by reactionary vested interests, resulting from the suicidal “socialism now’ pol- icy of the CCF, had caused many previous supporters of the CCF to vote for other: parties, Mc- Kean stated that it was the vote- splitting tactics of the CCF that CKWX. 1|the 1943 election, enabled a Tory government to win 70 percent of the Ontario seats with 55 percent of the voters voting against them. “Why was the anti-Tory vote divided?” the LPP leader asked. “Because the CCF refused to co- (Continued on Page 8) See CCF DENOUNCED the CCF has been brought close to disaster as a national party, and the labor and democratic- people of Canada have been given clear warning of the need to vote labor and pre- vent a national Tory victory on June 11. Taking advantage of the situation created by the CCF’s rupture of the progressive vote, the Drew Tories pushed their campaign on two main issues—anti-Socialism and an attack on.racial and national unity- The Tories rode into power in 66 of the 90 provincial ling. The results were start- seats on a minority of 45 percent of the total votes cast. The CCF, which gained 34 seats in ended up on Monday with only six for a loss of 28, one of the worst defeats in Canadian political history. Among the CCF... members beaten were such figures as E. B. Jolliffe, Ontario provincial lead- er, C. H. Millard, Agnes Mac- Phail and Arthur Williams. Even the Liberals dropped from 16 to 10 seats, with Liberal leader Mitchell Hepburn taking a. per- sonal beating in the riding he has represented for many years. LPP INCREASE VOTE The only labor. group to hold its position in the Ontario House was the Labor-Progressive Party which actually increased its vote. J. B. Salsberg. was re-elected in Toronto-St. Davids, while A. A. MacLeod retained his Tor- onto Bellwoods seat by a big majority. They will be supported in the next provincial legisla- ture by Alex Parent, Labor mem- ber for one of the Windsor rid- ings who was nominated by the United Automobile Workers of America. The election outcome was con- vineing proof of the LPP’s pre- election appeal for electoral un- ity of all progressives..This was clearly emphasized in the state- ment -issued this week by Fergus McKean, B.C. provincial LPP leader, who declared “the elec- tion of a Tory government in Ontario vindicates the position of the LPP which called for elec- teral agreements among the anti-Tory forces to defeat the Tory menace.” “The victory of the Pro- gressive-Conservatives in the Ontario provincial election is directly attributable to the anti-unity policies and adven- turist election tactics of the CCF,” McKean declared. “The sweeping defeat suffer- ed by the CCF because of the withdrawal of labor support was foreseen long before the election. The spectacular “‘ges- tapo” charge by E. B. Jolliffe, without adequate evidence, served to obscure the real is- sues of the election and played into the hands of the Tories. Such charges, together with the attempt of the CCF to make Socialism: the main. issue, demonstrated the political bankruptcy of the CCF leader- ship in the elections and made the CCF defeat certain. The lack of electoral] agreements in the ranks of the anti-Tory voters enabled the Tories to gain 70- percent of the seats with a minority of only 45 per- cent of the popular vote. “The fact that the Labor- Progressive Party re-elected its members with larger ma- jorities, while the CCF lest 28 out of 34 seats, proves con- clusively that the adventurist policies of the CCF have been repudiated by Canadian labor.” “The Labor - Progressive Party is confident that the people of B.C. will be even more determined, as a result of the Tory victory in Ontario, to return bona fide labor rep- resentatives from this province on June 11.” CCF RECORD From the time they were elec- ted in 1943 and up until June 4 of this year, the CCF top leaders committed almost every political error in the book besides com- mitting every crime possible against the interests of organ- ized labor and labor unity. Here is how their record stands: By rejecting the offer of the Liberals and Labor-Progressives to form a progressive coalition government at the time the Drew government was defeated by the CCF’s want of confidence motion, CCF leader E. B. Jolliffe became directly responsible for (Continued on Page 8) See ONTARIO ELECTIONS KEEP THE TORIES OUT- VOTE LABOR A ey Pee
