sir concurrence in the nomination of H. W. Herridge as federal candidate for West Kpot-

Tory Disruptionists Will
Utilize Manpower Issues

GExcerpt from a speech delivered by Stanley B. Ryerson, author of “French Canada”

and managing editor of National Affairs Monthly, on behalf of the Labor-Progressive

Party, to a meeting of the Kitchener-Waterlos Friendship Council, Monday, Oct. 30.)
Progressive-Conseryative spokesmen and their entire press are manifestly intent upon
utilizing the issue of the employment overseas of the NRMA force in order to disrupt
In the course of this campaign, which is aimed at Ottawa rather
than Berlin, these gentlemen are endeavouring to perpetrate a monstrous hoax on the

conservative Le Devoir (October

this new agency of subversion.

That is not all.

ARCAND TIEUP

The Duplessis Union Nation-
ale party, which is the direct
ereation of the provincial Con-
servatives, was in power in the
three years which preceded the
outbreak of war. They then ac-
tively promoted pro-fascist pro-
paganda, via Adrien Arcand —
publicity director for the Quebec
Conservatives for the 1985 elec-
tion campaign, editor of Mr. Du-
plessis’ organ in Montreal, L’I-
lustration, and at the same time
“chef supreme” of the Canadian
Nazi party. Arcand is now in-
terned: but—

The present Duplessis govern-

ment is at present engaged in
negotiation with one of Arcand’s
chief lieutenants, «still at large,
with a view to instatinge him in
the. government set-up. (Let M.

Omer Cote, Duplessis” provincial

secretary, deny this if “he sees

| fit to do so!)

MISREPRESENTATION

Unprincipled misrepresentation
of the military situation has be-
come a chosen weapon of our
political reactionaries.

Should the government con-
clude that the military situation.
warrants the sending overseas
of the NRMA force, Canadians
will give it full support. The
labor-Progressive Party will do
all in its power to mobilize sup-
port for the measure, in French
as in English Canada, while con-=
tinuing with all vigor the
struggle to redress the burning
grievances and inequalities, so-
cial and economic, which beset
French ‘Canada, and without
Canadian

unity will perforce remain halt-

whose solution our

‘ing and vulnerable.

Trail workers in electing those
they consider best able to rep-
resent them and is essentially
a blow directed at trade
unionism. As such it is vigor-
ously resented by the workers
of Trail.

The third lie, that Trail CCF
members are dominated by the
LPP is not new to Trail CCF
members. The Trail delegate to
the last CCE provincial conven-
tion was called a “Communist
stooge” in answer to his efforts
to carry out his instructions and
work for a policy of working
elass unity. It indicates the
depths to which Trotslkyite ele-
ments within the CCF have sunk
in an effort to purge every unity
proposal in their party.

The last lie, that Mr. Herr-
idge has betrayed the CCE and
has failed to organize and
strengthen the CCF clubs in this
district, is, to say the least, re-

volting to the CCE and people
of this district. Mr. Herridge’s
activities on behalf of the trade
union movement are well known
throughout B.C. And it is also
known that the West Kootenay
CCF has been the strongest
organized district ‘in B:C. until
recently, when the anti-unity
policies of the executive began
to-indieate fear of interference
by the membership, thereby
hindering the organization. This
fear of the membership con-
trasts with Mr. Herridge’s re-
fusal to take any steps without
approval of the rank and file.

The refusal of the CCE pro- -
vincial executive to accept Mr.
Herridge’s nomination is giv-
ing -West Kootenay - workers
new experiences and knowl-
edge in the struggle against
those who split the ranks of
the people and betray the
cause of the workers.
