There has been organ- ized violence against Jewish bathers at a public resort. The windows of a series of Jewish stores in Toronto have ~ been smashed in an organized dem- onstration of anti-Semitism. ‘Virulent anti-Semitic © propa- fanada is disseminated’ week by week in Sections of the pub- lic ‘pre&s, and particularly in _ the province of Québec: Icould “name a dozen other examples. The fact is that anti-Semi- tism is spreading in Canada and getting: worse. It is be- coming more open' and violent and its poisonous tentacles are spreading out to sections of the country where it was previously unknown. The main reason for the success of the professional ‘anti-Semitics in spreading their ‘propaganda and activity lies in the fact that so Tittle is done in English language publica- tions to counteract their lies. The majority of Ganadians are democratic and tolerant, desiring only the betterment of Canada. Most of those who fall victim to thé insidious propa- ganda of the anti-Semities do not know that anti-Semitism is an instrument of ~ those : ments who are seeking to aid Hitler in Europe and block democratic progress in Canada. ¥ 'VEN in the labor movement~ there are thousands of earn- est men and women who do noti know that one of the main sufferers from anti-Semitism is _the labor movement. Yet, it is ele-.: a fact that the trade unions and the political labor move- ment of Germany and many” other countries of Europe were’ -destroyed to the ment of Hitler’s frenzied cam: - paign of anti-Semitism. It is undeniable that those who foster and encourage anti- Semitism in Canada are work- ing for the very forces that — would destroy the labor move- ment here also, if they became strong enough. Whether we are legislators or men working in-the ‘factories — or on farms, or soldiers fighting ‘overseas, “all*our ‘thoughts and energies and hopes are concentrated on these two ob-. The one essentiol ingredient for _the effective jectives. ; prosecution of the war and for the preparation for the peace is that the people should remain united in will and in purpose. This has been frequently urged by members in all quarters of the House, but things have been said re- cently in the House and outside it which do not make for unity. The unity of any country de- pends upon general understand- ing. We must recognize our common interest in the common good. Any understanding can be based only on knowledge and truth. The effective working of a democracy depends upon the knowledge of all people and in their interest in their own gov- ernment. = This is particularly so in Canada with five geographical divisions; a country where most of the people are descended from two races which have given to the western world its major civilizations. When one considers the differences which we must recognize do exist in Canada and the difficulties that have been overcome, the record of the people of Canada stands up better than the records of the eritics of Ganada. The great majority of Canadians are anxious to re- __main united in the war and ~in the peace. The great ma- jority. of Canadians are pre- pared to face facts realistic- ally and to make their ut- most effort to get along to- gether in the recognition that along any other road lies ‘disaster. The duty of serving Canada must not be limited to people of any one race, and the right to serve Canada is not limited to people of any race. It should be the glory of Canada that this is, one place on earth where myths of racial superiority and racial prejudices shall not flourish: 3 Hitler advertised race theo- ries, and the world has seen what they mean. His reign of terror is best expressed and un- derstood by the violent anti- Semitism which has been, not his article of faith, but his stock-in-trade. % When we join in anti-Semi- tism of any Kind, when we join in giving voice to racial theories of one kind or an- other, we point Hitler’s sword at our own breasts. Spiritually the people who give way to racial prejudice, who breed intolerance by their own intolerance, who create in- justice by being less than just, are walking in the footsteps not of Christ but of all that Chris- tianity and humanity stand and fight against in this war. ‘Ae Province of Quebec, my Own .~ native province, to which I am deeply attached, having been born there and de- scended from. people who lived there for three generations, is not today predominantly rural.
