Potential Ally

Piara Singh, President, Hast Indian
Youth Association, writes:

India’s raw materials are of im-
mense value to the United Nations,
yet India seems to have suffered
from arrested development. Sec-
ond richest country in raw materi-
als in the world, she has rich de-
posits of high-grade iron ore, and
manganese. She has the interna-
tional monopoly on jute, and pro-
duces three quarters of the world’s
supply of mica,

India has a long heritage of
skilled craftsmanship from the
days when Indian calicoes, silks
and muslins were fashionable in
Europe. Yet only two percent of
the population is employed in in-
dustry. The main reason for this
is the British policy of erecting
in India a colonial economic struc-
ture; India has been forced to re-
main @ producer of raw materials,
a source of tax revenue, and a mar-
ket for British goods.

In spite of legal and political
handicaps, however, Indian indus-
trialists have lately gone ahead at
a terrific pace so that India is
now the eighth most industrialized
nation in the world. She is now
the second largest steel manufac-
turer in the British Empire. The
Hindustan Aircraft Factory at
Bengalore has gone into the pro-
duction of fighter planes, and In-
dian shipyards are busy building
life-boats, mine-sweepers and oth-
er craft.

Tremendous as India’s war ef-
fort has been so far, it is nothing
when compared to the country’s
almost limitless potentialities, both
in Manpower and material wealth.
Wot even the -vital needs of war
have been enough to overcome the
hostility of British interests toward
Indian industrial development. On
the other hand, many Indian in-
dustrialists and financiers, often
backers of the Congress party,
have shared the divided loyalties
of their countrymen at large, and
are unable to give their best to
the war effort while their nation

Collier’s Lies.

Walter Baldwin, shipyard worker,
writes:

May I join your paper in con-
demning the recent editorial which
appeared in Collier’s
titled, USAs and USSR.” This edi-
torial is, in my opinion, nothing
but a manifestation of fifth col-

umn fascism operating in the Unit-
ed States.

In view of the magnificent battle
that the USSR is putting up
against Nazi Germany, the Collier's
reference to Russia as our “semi-
ally” is not only a straight lie but
is in the worst possible taste. It
is also the opinion of the Collier’s
editors, according to~-the editorial
in question, that real Communism
went out with Trotsky, and the
soelalism of Stalin, on the other
hand, is nothing more than Fas-
cism or State Capitalism. Stalin
has also—according to Collier’s—
helped the “Partisan guerrillas in
Yukoslavia, who are fighting Draja
Mikhailovitch’s anti-Axis Chet-
niks-’’ In other words, Collier’s is
accusing the USSR of being on
the side of the enemy, while Mik-
hailoyitch’s pro-fascist chetniks are
played up as heroes.

Among Stalin’s other “crimes,”
according to Collier’s, is the fact
that he has not “publicly cut off
all relations between the Moscow
Government and Communist par-
ties new making nuisances of
themselves throughout the non-
Russian part of the world.’ This,
to Collier’s, is practically the last
straw! In desperation, and fear of
the growing power and political
consciousness of the working peo-
ple of America, Collier’s brings
out the old red herring to drag
across the trail.

But what really annoys Collier’s
is that Stalin “always acts for Rus-
Sia’s interests.’ Well, we can un-
derstand Collier’s disapproval of
any man who has his country’s
best interests at heart. Such things
aren't done, apparently, in the set
in which Collier’s editors move! At
any rate, no one will ever accuse
this magazine of an over-excess of
patriotism.
