A majority of growers attending he meeting were lessees of berry arms formerly held by Japanese ‘rowers. W. Little, elected presi- dent of the new organization, who is also secretary of the Matsqui and District Bean Growers’ As- sociation, told a People repre- sentative after the meeting, “Our first move will be to take up their grievances. However, we do not intend to confine ourselves to the problems of these growers only, but we hope to build an or- ganization that will be represen- tative of all berry growers on the lower mainland.” Elected officers of the new or- fanization were: J. W. Little, Maisqui, president; R. Richardson, Mount Lehman, first vice-president; S. Terepockl, Mission, second vice-president; W.- A. Drive Reaches S1350 Mark British Columbia workers want The People. This is very evident in the press drive returns to date. With a little over two weeks to go, People supporters have raised New Island Yard Starts Ship Construction Mayor Sees Nanaimo As Shipbuilding Center NANAIMO, B.C.—Further development of Nanaimo as a shipbuilding center is seen by Mayor V. B. Harrison of this city, who, in an interview with The People this week, stated that “conditions are very promising for extension of present ship- building facilities and development of new sites.” mowers leased many of their farms, . 8 percent respectively, $1,351.75, 38.90 percent of our $3,500 objective. First committee to go over the top, if present returns indi- eate anything, will be North Burrard shipyard, which has raised 96.54 percent of its quota. This will make it winner of the challenge from West Coast to get the quota first. But, there still remains the challenge to raise the most money over and above the quota. Wext on the list is Powell River, with 90 percent raised. Every- thing points to this up-and-com- ing committee doubling its quota, so, other points north, south and east, had better look to their laurels. South Burrard shipyard and Van- couver City Committee are vieing with each other to see who shall reach the 100 percent mark first. Zlotnick, Prop. 160 East Hastings COMPLIMENTS of REGENT HOTEL Tel. PAc. 7435 “Hor the past two years the city© council and Nanaimo industrial committee have worked hard to es- tablish a shipbuilding industry here. Many experts have reported favor- ably on this harbor. We have aux- jliary machine shops. We are also confident that there is an adequate reservoir of labor which can be drawn upon for ship construction work,’ Mayor Harrison said. A Nanaimo company is now pre- paring to start construction of ships on a city-leased site where ships were built some sixty years ago. Vancouver interests, who believe another city site to be the equal of any in the province, are also re- ported to be interested in develop- ing a new shipbuilding plant here. Other commercial interests are re- ported to be contemplating develop- ment of the present shipyard on Weweastle Island. “While the industrial committee, representative of local organiza- tions, has nothing to sell or buy, it will offer support and every pos- sible assistance to the proper per- sons desirous of developing the ship- building industry here,” Mayor Har- rison declared.
