While claiming to “recognize the right to freedom of opinion on the war,” Attorney-General H. G R. Mason has issued an announce- ment of the government's deter- mination not to “tolerate utter- ances designed to divide or disturb the people in the prosecution of the war.” Said the attorney-general: “I have recently been examining newspaper and magazine articles, pamphlets and reports of speeches which officials regard as subver- Sive. I have no hesitation in saying some of the matter deserves this charge.” The announcement reportedly was aimed at the Communist party but there is no doubt that repres- Sive action would be extended to all sections of the labor movement. Attorney-General Mason himself has made this clear in his defini- tion of what he considers ‘subver- Sive.’ To maintain that Britain and France are engaged in a capital- istic war is nonsensical and sub- yersive, he said. It is also sub- versive to maintain the war must be fought on two fronts, one against Hitlerism and the other against the New Zealand econo- mic system. SYDNEY, Australia — It is free- ly reported here that general con- scription will be introduced in Aus- tralia by the end of June. The federal government, it is said, is already making the necessary pre- liminary arrangements. Further confirmation of the gov- ernment’s intention to introduce universal conscription is seen in the action of the ministry of sup- Plies. According to official re- ports, the ministry has already placed orders for 300,000 pairs of boots for the army. Fears of a similar moyement by : New Zealand’s Labor government are contained in a report reéeived here from Auckland. Efforts of trade unions in New Zealand to get a precise answer from the government on this ques- tion have been met with evasions. At an Auckland Labor meeting the government was asked through the minister of lands whether a referendum would be taken before conscription were imposed. The workers were an- Swered that the last election, when the Labor government was put into office, was all the refer- endum needed, and that if the Severnment found it necessary it would take 100 percent measures.
