Organizational gains made in
Vancouver Trades and Labor
couneil’s drive to draw unor-
ganized workers into its ranks
were registered at Tuesdays
meetins ee delesates accept-
ed plalbaten and seating of
delegates from the newly-or-
ganized Warehousemen’s union
local 31A, affiliated with Team-
sters’ Joint council.

The new union was organized
recently among warehouse em-
pPloyees of McDonald's Consolidat-
ed Grocers and stepped up wages
from a $60 a month minimum to
$85. A similar move to organize
Western Grocers’ subsidiary, was
frustrated when company officials
formed a company union.

ed as unfair by the union, which

Further organizational gains
Within the next few weeks were
indicated by CGC. M. Stewart, organ-

MOSCOW, USSR. — Moscow

children are to get twenty kilo-

meters (about 1214 miles) of rail-

road, the People’s Commissariat of
Railway Transport announces.

council seats. Sapperton and
Queensborough both gave
Hughes a big vote, while
Westside and St. Barnabas
also gave him considerable

AROUND THE PROVINCE

This action followed representa-—
tions to the city council by Vil-
liam Atkinson, district representa—
tive, Ed. Boyd and Percy Lawson,
United Mine Workers union offi-
cials:

A communication from the
UMWA drew the council’s atten-
tion to the situation 18 months ago
when 1000 miners were employed
‘in the district as compared to the
550 men employed today. Two
mines have been closed within a
period of one year.

Atkinson quoted figures from
the Coal Gommissioner’s reports
ef 1935-36 claiming that coal re-
serves in 1935 were 30,000,000 tons.

Recoverable coal at that time
amounted to 18,000,000 tons, but

not all of that amount had been
mined.

He told the council he believed
there was one square mile of coal
still in Reserve mine and indicated
that an independent survey would
be made to determine coal re-
sources in and around Nanaimo.
The union official felt that 1000
miners could still be employed
locally.

Perey Lawson protested removal
of maintenance work to Union
Bay which would Wisplace 30 men
from employment. Alderman D.
D. Knox, in supporting Miners’
claims, said that closing Of main-
tenance shops would mean a loss
of about $20,000 in wages to loca}
men.

Council adopted a resolution

Brousht To 66

Death of James Gonlison, 22-year-
old logger employed at Merrill, Ring
and Wilson’s Rock Bay camp this
week, brought the number of
fatalities in BC logging camps this
year to 66, 12 deaths higher than
the 10-year average, according to
Nigel Morgan, secretary of Inter-
national Woodworkers; BC Coast
District council,

The youthful logger was instantly
killed when a car broke loose and
struck the car on which he was
standing.

Councillor Thomas Binnie,
supported by labor and pro-
sgréssive forces, was re-elected
councillor for ward one in Sur-
rey Ss municipal elections. last
week, defeating Jack Bothwell,
eandidate of the Citizens’ Dem-
oecratic League, Surrey coun-
terpart of the Vancouver Non-
Partisan Association.

In ward two, Councillor B. G
Shepherd, another prosressive,
was narrowly defeated by only
six votes by M. Dickson, Citizens’
Democratic League candidate-

A new development in Surrey po-
litical life, the Citizens’ Democratic
League, was formed this year after
a2 series of meetings in the munici-
pality. Allegedly ‘non-partisan,’
the League has followed very close-
ly the aims and activities of Van-
couver’s Won-Partisan Association,
subscribing to Rt Hon. Stanley
Baldwin’s sentiments that ‘ideas
may be a greater peril to demo-
ecracy than the sword.’ The Cuiti-
zens’ Democratic League would ey—
idently keep ideas out of munici-
pal political life.

Ray Shepherd, progressive can-
didate for Surrey school board,
was elected by acclamation.

In Coquitiam, William J. GC. Web-
ster, progressive eandidate for
reeve, was defeated by R. C. Mac—
Donald, re-elected with only an 85
vote majority over Webster. B. T.
Quadling, third candidate for
reeve, polled only 42 yoies.
Running in ward five for Maple
Ridge municipal council, Council-
lor John Larsen, progressive, was
defeated by G. M. Kearns.

In Kelowna, Owen HE. Jones this
year did not contest the mayoraity
he has held for some years, but
topped the’ aldermanic poll with
530 votes. Jones is prominent in
the CCF in the Okanagan.
