Attempts will undoubtedly be
made to separate these major
problems, to deny their relation-
ship. They are indivisible. The de-
fense of democracy at home, the
military victory over fascism, can
not be separated from the all-im-
portant task of defeating the split-
ters and keeping our trade union
Tanks united. Nor can any of
these problems be separated from
the basie task of extending trade
union organization to every unor-

to sabotage the achievement of
any one of the main problems will,
of necessity, undermine and en-—

A year ago the Trades Congress
convention, meeting in Wiagara
Falls, showed its understanding
when it adopted unanimously a4
resolution “reiterating its firm be-
lief in collective action through
the League of Nations as the most
effective means of maintaining
world peace.” It recognized “the
meed to render help at this hour
to those democratic countries
whose independence and integrity
is now being challenged” and call-
ed on the Canadian government
“to co-operate with other peace-

A lasting and democratic peace
can only be attained by those who
do not seek imperialist redivisions
of the world and who do not
scheme new territorial conquests
and annexations. Those who fa-
vor the fascist dictatorship and
who acted as apologists for Hitler;
who deny labor its rights in their
Own countries; who scheme and
plot with fascists to deprive the
people of their democratic rights;
who seek to enrich themselves at
the expense of the people during
the war—these people cannot be
relied upon to carry on a success-
ful war against fascism, to really
unite all democratic anti-fascist
forces in their respective coun-
tries for the full defeat of Hitler-
fascism and gain a just and last-
ing peace.

the swamp of jingoism. Canadians
are most Sincerely prepared to
make all necessary sacrifice to
defeat fascism and the trade un-
ion movement will find a hearty
response if it will assume leader-
ship in uniting all progressive
forces for a genuine prosecution
of the war against fascism and to
defense of the interests of the
people at home.

But neither our own Dominion
sovernment, nor the sovernments
of England and France accepted
the peace proposals of labor. In-—
Stead they were guided by forc2s
hostile to labor, who fear labor’s
ascendancy to power, who are not
unfriendly to fascist forms of gov-
ernment and who hoped to direct
the armed and strengthened Nazi
monster towards the Soviet Union.

Wot only labor, not only the So-
wiet Union, but even such men as
Anthony Eden, Duff Cooper, Diloyda
George, Winston Churchill and
cthers warned against the suicid-
al policy which was persistently
adhered to until the very last min-
ute.

Now that Poland has been a+t-
tacked by the brutal Nazi war ma-
chine, now that the sovernments
of England and France, under
Pressure of the people, have de-
Clared war on WNazi government
and our Own country has declared
war, labor cannot be indifferent
to the outcome of this war.

Labor stands for the fullest
support ef Poland. Labor, to
gether with all genuine anti-fas—
cists, desires a complete defeat
of the fascist regime and the re-
storation of democracy to the
great German people. Labor de-
Sires a victorious peace that will
be free of annexations and in-
demmities. Labor seeks the re-
Storation of full national inde—
pendence to the Czechoslovak
and Austrian people who have
been put under the bloody fists
of the Hitler regime.

But it must be apparent to all
that if the colossal sacrifices
which our people are prepared to
make to destroy fascism to its
roots are not to be in vain, then
the labor and progressive forces in
eur country and everywhere else
in the world must come to the
fore. A victory over fascism can
only be gained by those who are
€enuinely opposed to fascism and
all that it stands for.

Labor Must Take Lead
In Fighting Reaction

tolerate the formation of a re-
actionary, so-called “National
gevernment,”’ which the anti-
labor, anti-democratic forces in

and enact anti-labor legislation.

4. Take the lead in the fight

izatiens and groups.

5. Launch the fight against
the war profiteers. No war mil-
lionaires im a real anti-fascist
war.

6. Take a lead in the unifica-
tion of all progressive forces to
Huarantee the election of anti-
fascist, progressive representa-
tives to all governmental bodies.
Can these tasks be achieved
without the maintenance of trade
union unity, without the growth
of trade union organization, with-
out safezuarding the economic in-
terests of the Canadian workings

men and women?

Obviously not. These are insep-
arable tasks which the Trades
Congress convention in this critic-
al period must grapple with boldly
2nd decisively as is befitting the
largest body of organized labor in
the country. History will judge
the forthcoming convention of our
Trades Congress. It is up to all of
us to meke sure that that juds—
ment shall be one of which our
successors wall be proud.

P Dr Again we are launched into the tur-
SESE ESS SS moil of a press drive. It takes money

to carry on a war like the one that is now devastating Europe
and it just as surely takes money to carry on our paper. With-
out the advantages which keep the capitalist papers out of
bankruptcey—political shish funds, mass advertising for which
Ehey sell their principles, and union-smashing campaigns for which
they are paid by the Industrial Council, the Shipping Federation,
the Boss Loggers and other bodies of a like character, we are com-—
pelled to depend upon supporters who are in no way connected with
such outfits.

We have a big objective this time—$4000—but it is necessary be-
cause we also have a big objective for the Advocate itself—an eight-
page paper. If we do not reach the cash objective we will have diffi-
culty in achieving the paper’s objective.

In past drives this column has set itself the task of raising $100 in
subs. and donations. Sometimes we made it and sometimes we fell
down, but we always tried. In the last drive we raised over $130. Lhis
was largely due to the help of the Atlin miners. They will probably
have a press committee of their own in this drive and we will be Sorry
to lose their help in raising our share, but we know they will do a
food job on their own account.

So it is up to the rest of us to make up the difference. We can
do it! We can not only make the $100 but we can top the last figure.
in fact, maybe we can make it $150. Let’s try! Who will turn in the
first donation? Who wants to assure that eight-page paper?

forget that industry still exacts its toll from our class.

All the heroes are not dressed in military uniforms. Tabor has its
heroes as well as war. One of them was Gus Krussell, who worked
at Bralorne. Gus was a man I am proud to Say was a friend of mine.
The interests of the class to which he belonged came first in his mind
always. He was a hard-rock miner. While working in a stope at the
Bralorne mine a few days ago a slab of rock fell on him and crushed
him to death. He took that risk every time he set up his machine,
but he always found time to further the well-being of his union and
his class.

We won’t have Gus to help us in this press drive. Who will take

. his place? It will take two men.

i take this opportunity to extend sympathy to Mrs. Krussell.

Sugar is such a2 common thing. But during
Sweets of War. the last war so many ships loaded with
sugar were sunk in the ocean that it became scarce. Tt did not become
scarce immediately the war broke out; in fact it was three years be—
fore it became noticeable.

As I write this, the present war is only two weelks old. Only a
few ships have been sunk, none of them carrying sugar; but if they
were all loaded to the sunnel with sugar, it would not affect the supply
of sugar in Vancouver. Wonetheless, the following story is true.

A man going home from work dropped into Woodward’s store to
buy some groceries. Among other things he wanted five pounds of
Sugar. At the sugar counter he was confronted with the following
notice, “Sorry. No Sugar. Sold Out’

He asked the girl what it meant. “Tt just means what it says,” she
told him. “We haven’t even a spoonful of sugar in stock.” He was
dumbfounded, but came to and exclaimed, “Well, I’m a son-of-a-sun,—
and I just helped to make five million pounds in the past week!”

“Ele was a sugar refinery worker and had helped to put through.
about seven pounds of sugar for every individual in British Columbia,
but he couldn’t get a spoonful for himself.

Who got it? Where did it fo? it left the sugar refinery. The
people who use sugar haven’t got it. Who has? How about clamping
down on the war profiteers who are starting so early? How about it,
Premier King?

to selecting tid-bits for delectation of undiscerning readers.

One of these tit-bits appeared in the columns of that rag last week.
it was entitled “Heil Stalin.” Its author was a notorious alleged jour-
nalist who spreads a column of Sarbage on the pages of the New York
Herald-Tribune—George E. Sokolsky-~

Compounded from the lying effusions of others of Sokolsky’s own
kidney, like the self-styled Princess Radziwell and the also self-styled
“General” Krivitsky, the column-long, featured screed of slander on
Stalin and the Soviet Union is what might be expected from an in-
tellectual pervert whose little skunk-soul is for sale.

And who is Mr. George Sokolsky? If we go back to 1916, we will
find him studying at the Columbia University School of Journalism.
In that year he was hauled up before the director of the school, Dr.
Talcott Williams, who addressed him in these beautifully expressive
words, “There is a general impression that you are a grafter and a
sponge. That you raise money by borrowing, that you ask for what
you want and are willing to take it wherever you can get it... You
are looked upon all around by those who come in contact with you
aS a man who does not understand the truthfulmess that lies behind
the truth ... If you had gone to jail and served time, you could fet
over that more easily than you can get over this impression which
now surrounds you at all points.” The following year he was dis-
honorably expelled from the school.

In these early days he was a wordy, loud-mouthed disciple of Hmma
Goldman, the leading exponent of Anarchism in America. When the
revolution broke in Russia he made a bee-line for Petrograd, hoping
to Capitalize on it for himself. There he took service with an Enplish
newspaper. It belonged to the Allies and its Purpose was to keep the
Russians in the war. The Soviets clamped down on it. It came out
under another name. Six times this happened. Then the sailors of

the Baltic fleet decided to clamp down on it for keeps. They tool
sledge hammers into the press-room and made serap of the
machinery.

Sokolsky escaped to China where he sold his dubious talents to
Chinese reaction. When that played out he turned himself over to the
Japanese and appeared as editor of the Japanese controlled propa-

Today he is in the pay of the most reactionary section of American
capital. He boosts the company union, “because it is sound ,..and
because of the social relationship of capital and labor in American
life.” The La Follette Civil Liberties Committee made public a letter
in which the president of the American Tron and Steel Institute honors
Sokolsky by naming him “the most outstanding advocate of the open.
shop in America.” 2

The lean and hungry days when he sponged on Emma Goldman
are gone. The same committee dug up proof that he had at least one
paycheck from the Steel Institute for 340,000 for writing anti-union
articles and propaganda The Herald Tribune and the Sun pay him
for the same stuff, which is useful to them because “he was once a
revolutionist.”” It would not be fair to c2ll him a rat—i mean it would

not be fair to the rat.
