C., Friday, December 23, 1938 A Deplorable Action T IS deplorable that the president of the Trades and Labor Council of Vancouver openly and publicly supported the candidates of the notorious anti-labor Non-Partisan Asso- ciation against Dr. Telford, the candidates of the CCF, the trade unions and other progress- ive organizations. Tt is also deplorable, even disgraceful, for William Offer, himself a candidate of the CCE in the election and beaten by the candidate of the Non-Partison Association, to defend the action of president Jamieson in a meeting of the Trades and Labor Council when the presi- dent was faced with the possibility of a vote of censure for his anti-labor activity on behalf of the Non-Partisan clique. How different the stand of Ronald Macaulay, CCF candidate defeated for re-election to the Parks Board. He supported the motion of well- merited censure: But Offer, opposing his CCE colleague, introduced an amendment which “recognizes the right of anyone to express his political opinions providing they do not invovle this council,” thereby whitewashing Jamieson. The very fact that Jamieson is known as the president of the Trades and Labor Council involved the council, and the candidates of re- action were not slow to make use of that fact. Yes, Jamieson has the right to express his political opinions, whatever they may be. He also has the right to scab and break strikes directly together with his associates of the reactionary INon-Partisan clique. But the Trades and Labor Council has the right to censure or even expel from office any of its officials who engages in such work. The reactionary Matthew Woll, a vice-presi-— dent of the American Federation of Labor, was eompelled to resign from membership in the employees’ anti-labor National Civic Federa- tion regardless of what his “rishts” were. The action of Jamieson can not be compared to support of a capitalist political party, for the Non-Partisan Association is nota political par- ty but an amalgam of the most reactionary scum of the Liberal and Conservative parties and fascist organizations, out-and-out fascists like Colonel Edgett, and labor renegades like Pettipiece. When Jamieson gave his support to this despicable outfit, and thereby be- smirched the name of the Trades and Labor Council and the trade union movement, wheth- sr he was acting officially or not, he, by that action, and Offer by his defense of him, en- dorsed the clubbing of the longshore strikers and the smashing of their strike; they endorsed the action of the Non-Partisan clique’s mayor in setting his police to work clubbing and tear- Bassing the unemployed boys in the Post Office 5n Vancouver's Bloody Sunday To carry the “right” of a union official to support a capitalist class political party which supports the principle and practice of demo- eratic government to the extent of granting Aim the right to join or support fascist parties or reactionary, pro - fascist, union - smashing eoncentrations such as the WNon-Partisan Asso- ciation is nothing less than downright treason to the organized labor movement. The action of Offer is all the more repre- hensible in that he was a candidate of the CCF of which the Non-Partisan gang is the deadly enemy. His action merits the severest con- demnation by the CCF, for no working-class organization can afford to permit such support for reaction and fascism as that shown by Offer in the face of and in opposition to the correct and manly position taken by his fellow CCF member, Macaulay, on the same issue. What About That $1000? Soe two weeks ago during the heat of the i» civic eleciton campaign, Col. Welson Spen- eer, whom electors swept into the ashean on yoting day, was quoted in the press as having issued certain challenges. Tt seems the gallant colonel, who has been doing his level best to sell BC down the river io Japan, was pinned down by a member ot one of his audiences to admitting that his name appeared on the directorships of several Japanese companies exploiting BC mining and timber resources. Being finally forced to admit what he had frenziedly tried to conceal, the colonel retired in good order behind another barricade and defied anyone to prove he held any shares jn such companies. Apparently he was trying to convince Van- ecouver citizens—and it seems he succeeded— ¢hat he acted out of friendship to Japanese in- ¢erests in allowing his name to appear on their books, something in the nature of a “front man.’ And to “prove” that he did not hold any shares, he offered, so it is said, $1000 to anyone proving otherwise. So last week the Advocate acecpted the challenge. We printed under a main headline a lengthy article in which we stated that Col. Spencer, according to our information, held 40 shares in the Canamoku Company, known $n Vancouver as the Canadian Lumber Com- pany, as well as 100 shares in the N. S. McNeil Trading Company, coutrolled by the Nippon Soda Company, to cite only two examples. That was a week ago and there has been no reply from the colonel as yet. And what we svould like to know now is—what about that $1000? Or was Col. Spencer merely making an election speech? -then. A Victory For Progress By MALCOLM BRUCE HE entire labor and progressive movement in Vancouver and throughout the province has been encouraged and stimulated by the election of Dr. Telford to the office of mayor of the third most populous city in Canada. There are those who seek to minimise the importance of his election by claiming that it was a personal victory and was made possible because of the split in the reactionary camp and the candidacy of Colonel Spencer, and that because he ran as an independent it does not represent a progressive gain. It is true that the entrance of Spencer into the contest drew votes from Miller; it is also true that many who voted for Spencer did not know that he is an ultra-reactionary and tied up with fascist organisations and with Japanese imperialism and, not yet quite ready to support Telford. voted for Spencer in pro- test against Miller. But were Spencer not in the field, many of these voters would have expressed their protest by voting for Tel- ford. it is by no means sure, therefore, that had the contest been solely between Telford and Miller the latter would have won. The ousting of the reactionary labor-hating BC Electric stooge, Miller, and the election of the progressive Telford is a decisive set-back for reaction. Miller con- tinued the anti-trade union and strike-breaking policies of Mc- Geer. His use of the police on Bloody Sunday, last June, when the unemployed single men in the Post Office “were clubbed and eassed made his very name an object of hatred to thousands of eitizens. The use of his police in arresting unemployed workers for tincanning on the streets when it was their only way to live except by resort to crime damned him in the eyes of all decent per- sons. It can be conceded that the personal popularity of Telford contributed considerable to his success; ithe comparatively low average vote received by the CCE eandidates for the Council and the School and Park Boards show that. And despite the mistake of the GCE, which after refusing to unite with other progressive bod- ies behind a single progressive slate, withheld official support from Telford, his victory brought added prestige, influence and strength to the CCE- eo: HE work of the new mayor will be difficult in view of his having to work with a reactionary city council—only one, Miss Gut- teridge, being progressive. The forces represented by the so-called Won-Partisan Association which jave almost complete control of the city council, and will do their utmost to block any progressive actions of the mayor, will endea-— vour to compromise and discredit him and that which he represents before the voters: Already they are fawning on him, proferring their worse than worthless advice and the Judas kiss. In such a2 situation Telford must have the assistance and support of the entire labor movement and of all progressive citizens, while at the Same time his deeds as 2 public official should be subject to friendly, constructive criticism with a view to assisting him and to bring credit not only to himself and his administration, but to the party of which he is a2 prominent member and leader, to the work ing class and the forces of pro- gress generally. Se T MOUSE be borne in mind that Telford will be mayor for a two-year term; and during the second year of that term he should have more support in the city council in order to further eripple reaction and advance Van- ecouyver alon= a progressive path. To do this it is necessary that ALL labor and progressive organ— isations get together and unite their forces in support of a singie progressive slate of candidates for next year’s civic elections and sweep the reactionary remnants of McGeerism and Millerism and agents of the ‘“non-Partisan’’ clique out of the city council, the School Board and the Parks Board. To bring about this unity of pro- gressive forces the CCE can play a great part, even a decisive one; and by so doing can assure that the partial loosening of the stran- glehold which reaction has so long hela on Vancouver, which partial loosening was accomplished by the election of Dr. Telford, will be completed next year and Vancou- ver will have both a progressive mayor and a progressive city couneil. Twvo Letters On Palestine ‘Observer’ Questions Bruce Editor, People’s Advocate = Tam a constant reader of your progressive paper, and being of Jewish faith, I wish to reply to the article on Palestine by Mal colm Bruce. First, may I make clear that I believe Zionism is not the solu- tion to the Jewish problem. Tf realize that as long as imperial- ism, whether British or Moslem, exists, there always will be blood- shed. Capitalism is to blame. Britain had motives when she promised the Jews and Arabs simultaneously, but when Mr. Bruce stated the Balfour Declar- ation was issued for support from Jewish bankers, it both amuses and annoys me. Surely Mr. Bruce does not believe in the fallacy of the tremendous power of the Jewish bankers. In Canada today there is not one leading Jewish banker or in- dustrialist. Banks, insurance companies and big business are all owned and controlled by Christians. In the United States there are wealthy Jews, but who controls the House of Morgan, Mellon, DuPont, Ford? Wot th= Jews! There are Jewish bankers —Kuhn, Loeb, Lehman, Warburg —-but can they compare to the Chase National or Rockefeller? I am afraid not. Nevertheless, I am not denying the fact that there some rich Jews. Arab hate and antagonism to- ward the Jew always existed. The Balfour Declaration just in- creased it. What about the bloody massacre of 1928? Did Hitler in- stigate it? Hitler wasn’t in power Italy and Germany today are just. urging the Arabs on, and they require little urging. The Zionist today openly advo- cates “live and let live.” Thev don’t exploit the Arab—they try to build up the country under tre- mendous handicaps. Schools, the city of Tel Aviv, hospitals and the Hebrew Univer- sity are examples of their efforts. Arabs have the use of the hospi- tals and clinics. Dhe Jews have to pay dearly, both in lives and cold cash, for each new acre epened up. The Zionist will meet the Arab half way, but what about the Arab. He attacks, mur ders, destroys and hates—is that cooperation? TI have to face facts, of Course. There is also a Jewish fascist or- ganization — the Revisionists, which is aggressive toward the Arab, but what is a hotheaded Jew going to do when he sees these pogroms—he fights back. Suppose the Arabs gained con- trol of the country. Can one be— lieve that irrigation, sanitation, collective farms, schools, hospi- tals, cities and hambors would be puilt? I am afraid the fascist powers would make room for an- other country in their anti-Com- intern pact. Tihe Arabs and fas- cists are cooperating remarkably well today. Until fascism is destroyed there can be no sohition to the Jewish problem. —“Observer.”” Bruce’s Rejoinder Eiditor, People’s Advocate: T am somewhat puzzled as to why your correspondent, “@Obser- ver,’’ who states he is of the Jew- ish faith, displays So much resent— ment at my article on ‘Palestine and the Jewish Question,” in view of his many admissions of the correctness of the main points I sought to make. He admits that Zionism is net the solution to the Jewish prob- lem; that Britain had her own motives (selfish, I presume) when she promised Jews and Arabs Palestine simultaneously; that there are wealthy Jewish bank- ers; that there is a Jewish fascist organisation in Palestine, and that until fascism is destroyed, there can be no solution to the Jewish problem. What then does he take excep- tion to? My reference ito Britain having made through the Balfour Declaration a bid for the support of Jewish bankers in the struggle against the Central powers in the ereat war? Because I stated known fact he. by brackets my assertion with the rabid ravings of Hitler, Henry Ford and other fascists and pro- fascists. But will your correspon— 'Gent contend that British imper- this well implication, jalism during the world war did not desire the support of the House of Rothschild and other wealthy Jews, or that one of the purposes of the Balfour Declara- tion was to procure that support? EI did not limit the purposes of the Balfour Declaration to the bid for the support of Jewish bank- ers; I included the effort to get Jewish workers into the army. “Qbserver’ does what Marx warned against, namely, he ig- mores the class struggle within Jewry and in ithe Moslem world. He treats the Jews as a single entity and the Arabs in the same way. All the atrocities the ascribes to the Arabs; and although he ad- mits that there is a Jewish fascist organisation in Palestine, yet there is no provocation or attacks on Arab workers by Jews! Why does he seek to whitewash and pin lings on Palestinian fascists just because they are Jews? Fascists are provocateurs and murderous gangsters whether they be Jews or Arabs or of any other race. He admits, with ob- vious reluctance, that Jewish fas- cists are “aggressive” toward the Arabs, but makes excuses for that ‘“apgression” on the ground that a “hotheaded Jew” cannot do otherwise; that he is only “fight- ing back.” Again placing the whole blame on the Arabs and exonerating ithe Jewish agents of fascism. The basis of the strife in Pales- tine is not a vertical division of the Jews and Arabs; it is the hor- izontal division of Jewish and Arab workers, lower middle class and professionals together with Arab workers and fellaheen, at the bottom of the social Scale, and the Jewish copitalists, financiers and reactionary Zionist political representatives of British imper- jalism together with Arab land- lords and tools of Nazi-Fascist states at the top. Against this upper reactionary elass the exploited Jews and Arabs unitedly must make com- mon cause and together and in cooperation work for the libera- tion of Jew and Arab alike in Pal- estine ana throughout the world. Only in this way will the “Jewish Problem” be solved. One Big Happy Family ALEING about family reun- ions, lets look for a moment at England’s aristocratic-pluto— cracy who so nobly bear the bur- den of Empire. Canada’s Family Gompact of a century ago was a piker outfit in comparison to the ruling clique of “in-laws” holding down official positions in England today, and of which the Journal de Geneve refers to in the follow— ing note: “The death a few months ago of two peers, the Duke of Devon- shire and Lord Harlech, as well as that of Lord Stanley, brings to light a queer enough theory in 4 democracy. “Devonshire ex-colonial secre- tary, was father of Lord Harting— ton, then Dominions under-secre— tary. The son of Lord Harlech was Mr. Ormsby-Gore, then col- onial secretary. Mr. Ormsby-Gore is the brother-in-law of Lord Cranborne (present foreign under- secretary). Lord Cranborne is the son of Lord Salisbury, ex-foreign under-secretary. Lord Staniey, who became Dominions secretary, was the brother of Oliver Stanley, president of the board of trade, and their father is Lord Derby, ex-war minister. Mr. Stanley is the son-in-law of Lord London- derry, ex-air minister. American Circus American citizens are wondering these days why they should bother to tune in on Jack Benny for a laugh when they can read about the antics of the Dies Committee on Un-American activities. Recently, for example, with Mrs. Hallie Flannigan, WPA of ficial on the stand, Congressman Starnes became interested in one “Christopher Marlowe,” asking if he was a Communist. While the audience howled with laughter Mrs. Flannigan said, “I was quot- ing from Christopher Marlowe, a ereat Elizabethan dramatist.” The Congressman blush ed. “Sir Samuel Hoare is the son- intaw of Lord Beauchamp, and Mr. Duff Cooper of the Duke of Rutland. Sir Thomas Inskip’s wife is the daughter of Lord Glasgow- Tord Halifax is married to Lord Onslow’s daughter and his MP son is the husband of Lord Derby's grand-daughter. Mr. Channon, Lord Halifax's secretary, is mar- ried to a daughter of Lord Iveagh, amother of whose daugh- ters is engaged to Mr. Lennox— Boyd, an under-secretary. Lord Feversham, a parliamentary sec- retary, is son-in-law of Lord Halifax.”’ Summing up, the Journal de Geneve concludes: “Among ministers and govern- ment posts there are two dukes, two marquesses, nine earls, nine viscounts, twenty barons, and more than a hundred baronets. These titled people are all some— how inter-related and related to the great commoners of polktics, finance and commerce” The voice of the English people will have a hard time making it- self heard through that wet blan- ket of officialdom. Jewish People Exiled Germans living in Enge— FE land are beginning to ask ramed. questions, the answers to which may put a different complexion on the ex planation of the Shooting of the Nazi secretary, von Rath, in Paris by the Polish Jewish boy, Grynszpan- The Hitler Nazi government will try to prove that the boy was the paid agent of “a group of in- ternational Jews.” But the real German people remember that the Hiitler-Goering arson combina— tion burned down the Reichstag building and at— tempted to fasten the blame on innocent workers. They remember how Dimitrov proved conclusively that Goering and the stool-pigeon, van der Lubbe, were the real criminals. And they now ask themselves if it is not remark— able that an obviously Jewish-looking boy of seven— teen was permitted to enter the German Embassy without any letter of introduction and led into the room of a higher official on the simple pretence that he wanted to show this official some documents. They point out further that the passports of all German Jews were cancelled on October 15, more than three weeks before the killing of yon Rath- Im the circumstances, a Jew with a passport in & German embassy or consulate would have been sus— pected by his presence alone. Nazi Even the victory oyer de- swe mocracy in Czechoslovakia, Money-raising. obtained through the whole hearted aid of Chamberlain, has not allayed the discontent of the German people against short commons. Last week Hitler himself admitted this food shortage when he made the statement that German has reached the limit of food producticn and the Germans will have to make the best of it Money is needed by the Nazis, and it was needed on November 7. There are rich Jews. How to get their wealth? The firebugs who concocted the Reichstag fire to get rid of the Communists are undoubtedly capable of arranging the “assassina- tion” of “a blue-eyed, blond-haired Aryan,” terroriz ing a simple Jewish boy to-do the shooting, working up a wave of “justifiable indignation,” organizing a pogrom on a defenseless people and finding thenz the much-needed four hundred million dollars. f The suggestion that the shooting of von Rath was a Nazi plant is believed, in well-informed po- litical circles in Tondon, to have a sound basis. This feeling gains strength as we learn that for a week before the shooting rumors were current in Paris that “something was going to happen to the Jews.” The latest move, the attempt of Hjalmar Schacht at the London conference on “refugees,” to buy off the world Jewish boycott which is of five years standing, by allowing greater privileges to refugees, is evidence that a train was laid of which the shoot— ing of van Rath was only the detonator. An excuse was necessary in the face of world opinion, and just as the alleged persecution of the Sudeten Ger- mans was used to grab off Czechoslovakia, so the engineered death of a Nazi secretary was 2 reason given to the world for robbing the Jews of all their wealth. = The Hitler-Chamberlain partner- A Vicious ship, when examined historically, Circle. begins long before the Munich premiere. Munich, like a Hollywood picture, was a long time in the making. I was in Germany on election day, November 1932. Hitler-suffered: an electoral defeat, and seeing the German workers lining up against him came to an agreement with Werr von Papen, ex-chancellor and vice-chancellor- to-be of the Reich. Together with another mining company, Metail- gesellschaft organized the EBuropean Pyrites Com- pany in order to monopolize the pyrites market as well as other material necessary for the manufacture of munitions. The other mining company was the famous Rio Tinto Company Ltd., whose management and owners are tied to Franco’s fascist murder bands in Spain. One of the directors and administrators of this traitorous corporation is Sir Joseph Francis, who is one of the king-pins of British heavy industry, particularly in the Birmingham Small Arms Com-— pany (BSA) manufacturers of machine 2uns and heavy arms, of which the chairman was the other end of the Hitler-Chamberlain axis—Mr. Weville Chamberlain.
