To Be Shown In City

First Chinese Movie

The first all-star Chinese motion
picture ever shown in Vancouver
will be presented at the Orpheum
Theatre on the evening of Sunday,
May 22, when a benefit program
will be given to raise medical aid
funds for Chinese war victims. A
Symposium has also been arranged
in which several missionaries of
the United Church of Canada, who
have had intimate experience of
conditions in China. will participate.

Writing of “A Woman’s Heart,”
the talkie to be shown, the Calgary
Albertan states: “Laughing, crying,
dancing, singing little Shio Ling Ti,
known as the Chinese Shirley Tem-
ple, drew tears and applause from
@ packed house at the Empress
Theatre. . . . Filmed in Shanghai
and Canton, it is a story of refu-
gees from the war during the de-
fense of Shanghai against Japan-
ese aggression.”

The proceeds of the benefit pro-
gram will be devoted to relief of
the Chinese war refugees.

Civil Liberties
Union Campaigns

The Vancouver branch of the
Canadian Civil Liberties Union is
launching a campaign to obtain
thousands of signatures to a peti-
tion, urging the federal government
to disallow the Quebec padlock
law as denying fundamental demo-
cratic rights.

In other parts of the dominion
similar petition campaigns are
now being conducted. The confer-
ence on the Padlock Law and Civil
Liberties set recently by the trade
unions and progressive organiza-
tions in Toronto expects to get at
least 250,000 signatures before
June 19 when the Canadian Legion
is sponsoring Magna Charta week.
Already thousands of resolutions of
protest against the padlock law
have been sent from organizations
and meetings all over the country
to both Prime Minister Mackenzie
Kine and Premier Maurice Duples-
Sis of Quebec.

A Christian Unity Centre has
been established at 1445 Salsbury
Drive, at the request of many who
attended the recent lectures of Miss
Evelyn Whitell at the Hotel Van-
couver and at Grandview. The cen-
tre is open daily from 10:30-to 4,
except Thursdays and Saturdays.
Next Sunday Miss Whitell will
speak at the Hotel Vancouver at

Fishermen Holding Dance

The Pacific Coast Fishermen's
Union, the Salmon Purse Seiners’
Union and Women’s Auxiliary are
holding a dance at Hastings Audi-
torium this Friday, May 13, 9 to 1.
Admission to the dance, with old-
time and modern music by an all-
union orchestra, is 25 cents.

Italians To Stage Concert

A concert will be held in the

A drawing held in aid of the Ser-

resolution urging deeper under-
standing of Christian stewardship
in the use of material wealth was
passed unanimously by the Toronto
synod of the Anglican Church.

' Friends Campaign For
Spain June Shipment

Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion for
funds to send another shipment on
June i to Canadian volunteers in
Spain, enabled the provincial office
of the F'riends to send $75 this week
as a first installment of a required
$400, British Columbia’s share in
the national campaign.

J. C. Chivers, provincial organizer
for the Friends, states the June
shipment will be composed mainly
of special foods, cigarettes and
other comforts, and that the main
idea is to obtain cash donations in
order that large quantities of sup-
plies can be obtained instead of in-

| dividual parcels, which are much

more expensive.

Prince Rupert Friends sent in
$18, proceeds of a social held to
help finance the June shipment.
This committee tried unsuccessfully
to obtain permission to hold a tag
day, and has announced a series of
socials to raise funds: Nanaimo
sent for twelve collection sheets,
and North Vancouver obtained four
sheets, Ghivers reported, stating
that his committee had sent letters
to Friends throughout the province
acquainting them with the objec-
tives of the campaign.

Ald. W. Cook Fights
For Jobless’ Cause

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC, May
12.—Mainly through the efforts of
Ald. W. Cook, recently elected labor
representative, unemployed here
have been issued a supply of gar-
den seed. Cook recommendation
that a community garden be devel-
oped by relief workers was defeat-
ed in the council on the claim that
the government was considering a

Reject Isolation

NEW YORK, NY, May 12—‘Re-
sults of The Nation’s poll show iso-
lation to have been rejected by
progressive opinion among all
groups and in all sections of the
country. Out of a total of 9,263
signed ballots received, only 1,493
—or less than one in six—sub-
scribed to the general isolation

A -score of single unemployed
men, acknowledged to be city
resident by relief authorities,
reported to the Advocate this
week that they had either been
cut off relief entirely or have
had their allowances greatly
reduced. :

One man declared that 500 of the
2700 single relief recipients in Van-
couver had been dropped from re-
lief rolls and that those remaining
on the register had been cut from
313.50 a month to $10.

Complaints toe relief officials’ are
met with the reply that the city
is determined to stop all relief al-
lowances to those who may be
termed “employable.’” Relief to
those over 50 years of age, the limit
set by the national employment
commission, has been reduced to
$2.50 a week.

“It is impossible to live on this
amount,” declared two men in the
latter category, “and we are going
to get together on this question.”

One man, a confirmed cripple,
was told this week that he was not
incapacitated for work and there-
fore would be cut off. He pestered
officials, refusing to leave the relief
office, and was-~- reinstated. He
stated that a man with one leg was
sent away without relief.

Showing his relief cheque, which
had been cut from $13.50 to $10, a
Single relief recipient, well over the
age limit, told the Advocate he
would not rest until he had organ-
ized those men over 50 in the same
plight as himself.

Scornfully waving a Vancouver
newspaper which eulogised, at the
expense of city jobless, the long
hike to the Yukon of two young
fellows in search of work, he
stated: “I worked for years in that
country and I know that if those
lads got a job it would be through
pity, because that territory is over-
run with men willing to work.”

He declared it to be impossible
to live on the reduced allowance
and he asked the Advocate to give
wide publicity. to the plight of men,
who, while described as “unemploy-
ables,” are condemned to slow
starvation.

Described as being a vindication
of the belief that Vancouver as a
whole is solidly behind the struggle
of the unemployed for work and
Wages, and as demonstrative of
the sterling worth of Vancouver
Mothers’ Council which sponsored
the affair, 4,200 single jobless men
ate their fill at a picnic held last
Sunday at Lumberman’s Arch,
Stanley Park.

People from every walk of life
eagerly did their part in an affair
which enabled them to give ex
pression both in support for the
boys and indignation at the sloth-
fulmess of the government in the
present intolerable situation.

Women from a number of organ-
izations, overwhelmed at first by
the number of picnic baskets
brought and sent by sympathizers,
worked with a will to satisfy the
healthy appetites of the large as-
sembly.

Lusty singing followed the lunch,
led by a young concertina player,
to be followed by a softball game.
Four speakers addressed the gath-
ering. E. Cumber on the objects of
the organization; Harry Molland,
who was released from New West-
minster penitentiary, on the need
for solidarity and singleness of pur-
pose; Mrs. Cowsill and Mrs. Law-
son of the Mothers’ Council, who
expressed confidence in ultimate
victory in the men’s struggle for
a works program.

In Vancouver, the close fight of
three main committees was brought
to a climax when Mount Pleasant
members brought in $15 Wednesday
noon, to win honors for Vancouver
Centre committee as first over the
top, reaching a total of $404.01 in
their objective for $403. In next
place stands Yancouver East at
$107.41, with the fine showing of
86.9 per cent of quota, closely fol-
lowed by East Joint committee at
$598.73, which means it has the high
level of 85.5 per cent, or only 1.4 per
cent to equal second place. It yet
remains to be seen which of these
committees will exceed its quota
‘by the highest margin.

The three Vancouver committees,
with their total added to the sums
of other local committees, give
Vancouver the fine showing of
$1367.95 on a total quota of 1447.

Some fine work has been done by
many of the members of the city
committees; as for instance, the
members of the sub-committee of
the Domestic Workers Union who
accepted the steep quota of $30,
and have already raised $17.85. De-
spite the fact that this is one of
the lowest paid of all occupations,
individual members have even sur-
passed many in the higher paid
trades. Esther Rask has raised
$5.35; Mildred Dougan, $5.25; Ida
Bowles, $3.25 Other outstanding
work in Vancouver includes John
Magnus, $19.25; Erna Whitman,
$12.50; J. Chivers, $11.25; A. Dove,
$6.50, and Sandy Buchan, $6.50.
Thirty members have won Bill Ben-
nett’s book, “Builders of British
Columbia” as the’ reward for selling
thrée club subscriptions.

The members of the East Joint
committee are active in selling sub-
seriptions: Drive Leader Salonin
reports the following subscription
scores of the respective commit-
tees: ULETA, 17; Finnish Club, 9;
Fishermen, 14: Swedish-Finnish
Club, 10; Domestic Workers, 9;
Committee of Inland Boatmen, 19;
Croatian Club, 7; Grandview CGom-
mittee, 9; and sub-committee no. 5,

for these committees to reach their
objectives, however.

District organizations assisting
the drive include the Relief Project.
Workers Union, which, despite the
adversity of unemployment, has
the fine showing of $75.07. It is
well to the front of the Woodwork
ers’ Committee, whose score is
$90.54. In view of the serious situ-
ation confronting members of the
Relief Project Workers’ Union they
have been excused the obligation
of completinse their objective of
$160. The drive committee hopes
that other committees throughout
the province will sufficiently over
fulfil objectives to make up this
difference.

OV Bill's Column, in the People’s
Advocate, has the aim of reaching
three figures, and the solid evidence
of $69.64 indicates that the many
friends of O]’ Bill will make certain
that the objective is attained.

As the press drive enters the
home stretch the daily receipts as-
sume increasing importance be-
eause their yolume indicates wheth-
er the drive will reach its goal in
the allotted time. When called upon
to produce figures of the drive
prospects we can show a list of
unfilled pledges totalling $500 which
we are confident will be fulfilled
Without any question. But if this
$500 is added to the $2340 already
on hand it leaves a lag of $160. And
we must be equally frank im Stat-
ing that it is beyond the capacity
of any one committee to raise this
additional sum.

We therefore urge that all sub-
committees attempt to hold one
more house social, or that all active
members pledge themselves to raise
an additional fifty cents after their
objectives are reached. By this
means the burden of this vital sum
of $160 would be spread over all
members. This sum must be ob-
tained, as it is unthinkable that
our publicly declared objective
should fall short. —
