Anti=Boycott Speech Rapped In opposition to the Japanese boycott broadcast delivered over CEKMO last Monday evening by A. M. Stephen, Canadian League for Peace and Democracy, was @ broadcast the same evening by Don Smith, recently removed from the editorship of The Federationist, in which he attacked the boycott campaign against Japanese goods, declaring that such a boycott would lead to war with Japan. Interviewed by the PA after the broadcast, A. M. Stephen express- ed regret that the executive of the CCF saw fit to retain Smith in such an important position as a spokesman for the CCE over the air. “Smith’s declaration that a boy- cott will lead to war, is the same slogan used by Mussolini during the Abyssinian campaign when he dared the world to boycott Italy, and shouted that it meant war to interfere with fascist aggression. Smith, by his statements, adopts the pro-fascist role,” Stephen de- clared. : Boycott Japanese Goods. ATTENTION: Progressive Organizations! Complete Public Address System for Rent. A. Grimsdall, Eden Cafe manager, as being responsible for recent attacks on local 28, Stewart related the following set of circumstances to the council: Because of refusai by the Eden Cafe management to sign an agree- ament with local 28 which would guarantee union wages and condi- tions to the waitresses, the union advertised the cafe as being unfair to labor about 6 weeks ago. At that time stickers appeared, alleged to have been issued by Grimsdall; which attacked the union as being “foreign” and stated that coercive methods were used to obtain union agreements. Simultaneously there appeared letters to the editor, in the Van- couver Sun, all making the same insinuations against the union, using the same phraseology al- though signed with different names. Stewart stated that Grimsdall had boasted to him in the past that he often wrote to the papers and answered his own letters, signing different names, and, in one instance, getting his dish- washer to sign for him. Grimsdall is also linked with the BC Industrial Association which has appointed him as organizer in the restaurant industry of Van- couver, Stewart declared, one cafe owner. who has caused trouble with local 28, having signed an agreement with the BC Industrial Association with regard to union matters. Secretary Bengough stated that the executive of the trades council would send a delegation to the Vancouver Sun requesting that the editor check up on some of the let- ters and to suggest that such pub- lished attacks on organized labor are not very edifying in a Vancou- ver daily.
