Page Si PEO inh Ss ADVOCATE Wovember 12, 1937 p =\ Column One E’RE becoming popular, it seems, if not with the intellizentsia, then with the boys who pack an awful wal- lop: When we arrived at the office Monday mornings we found a delegation of two from the local pugilistry awaiting our advent. For a minute we were uneasy but it was all right. It turned out they merely want- ed to congratulate us on the letter we published in this column last week from Hamanegger in which formation of a prize-fighters’ union, affiliated to the Trades and Labor Gouncil, was suggested. They thought it was a darn good idea and wanted to know what they could do to help it along. They. also told us that, as a result of the hint thrown out in this col- umn, at least one local promoter was loosening up the purse strings with a view to heading off organ- ization. There’s no doubt our correspon- dent hit on a sore spot, but we hope the boys won't be fooled. There’s only one way they can en- sure a real improvement in condi- tions in the fight game and thats by organization along the lines suggested. @ HOSE of our readers who fol- low the activities of the Van- couver Sports Club will remember the Dirty Duke who, outside of sports circles is known as Levens, HH. J. The Dirty Duke is now in Spain with the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion and is dirtier than ever, or so they tell us. We had a letter from him this week. “Just a line to let you know I am still alive and kicking,” he writes. “I meant to write sooner, but IT am very busy working in a hospital. “J had a wrestling match last week with Blackie—you remember him, Maurice Haldane, the tall full- blooded Indian from Kamloops. “The boys. at the front are sure doing good work. Every day they drive the Fascists back and every day more and more of the Fascists desert and come over to our side. ‘Please send us some copies of The People’s Advocate, as we do not get much news from the Coast, and let us know how things are going at the club.” e Li, over Hrance, according the news, sports fans are de- manding that the Olympic games for 1940 in Tokyo shall be boy- cotted. An announcement this week stated that Olympic CGommittee Chairman Armand Massad and Sports Minister Leo La Grange will shortly confer with the foreign minister, who will decide whether or not a French team will par- | tO ticipate. Meanwhile, the Jugo-Slav Olym- pic Committee has asked the French body to join 2 movement which would withdraw the games from Japan and transfer them to Finland, because “Japan's political attitude does not conform to Olym- pic ideals of fraternity among na- tions.” oe High. 3244 716 Bast Hastings Street 4068 East Hastings Street 1709 Commercial Drive Se Quality Products at Moderate Prices We Deliver to Fast End ana Grandview Homes Se ‘Thrifty Housewives Shop at Hastings Bakery?’ NIZE | Viaccabees Beat WA Will Play Gordons On Saturday Weelk-end Scores. Worth Shore 3, Royals L St. Saviours 4, Radials 3. Wo one, except possibly Royals, was surprised when North Shore United fulfilled prophecy at Jones Park last Saturday and turned in a 3-1 victory over the Westmin- ster team to ensconce themselves comfortably in the leadership of the Mainland League. What was surprising, however, was the hard fight put up by the Royals, particularly during the first half when they more than held their own. At the interval they were actually leading 1-0 from a goal scored by Spike Murphy ten minutes after the kickoff—and they were short a man at the time. In the second half the superior- ity of the Reds over a rain-soaked ground asserted itself. Larson scored the equalizer from a clever piece of play by Harrison and then went on to take a second on a pass from Spencer. Spencer himself made it three for the North Shore team when he headed the ball into the net after Hewitt had taken a foul. Over at Queen’s Park it was a pretty even game between St. Saviours and Radials, with goals coming freely. The Saints finally succeeded in nosing out their oppo- nents 4-3 after their lead of 3-0 at the turn-over had been evened by an aggressive rally. Only in the Jast minute of the game did Jack Ross ensure the game for St. Sav- ious by slipping one past Watters. Horace Heath, with two, and Murray West, who cinched a pen- alty, were the other scorers for St. Saviours, while Pallot (2) and Cow- an took the honors for Royals. Saturday’s Games Westminster Royals v Radials, Gon Jones Park; referee, Dick Woodward. St. Andrews v North Shore United, Confederation Park; ref- eree, Alex Murray. Both games start at 2:45. Trudeau, Paul Draw Vancouver Sports Has Good Card In the main squirm event at Vancouver Sports Club last Satur- day night Hee Trudeau and Mike Paul wrestled to a draw. Trudeau, who had the advantage in the first and second despite Paul’s dazzling variety of holds, took a fall in the second after he had succeeded in throwing Paul with a series of deadlocks. Then he proceeded to hang him on the ropes a few times before finally pinning his shoulders with a double grape vine and body press. Paul however, came back to knock Trudeau all over the ring with a number of elbow jabs, using a body press to take a fall and even the match. The semi-final saw the Wild Joker and Gil Singh wrestle 9 five- minute rounds to a draw. Stan Sowden won over Bill Smith in the opener. Mike Mikolajou, an out- side left, was the first to score with a high, well-placed shot, and the second goal was taken on a penalty shot by De Silva. Also in a second division game, Hammonds proved a little too good for Pro-Recs, maintaining their two point lead over the league with a 2-0 victory - First division games saw Pop Stiles’ Services increase their lead to three points when they handed Frasers their first defeat of the season.
