J. A. HBumbird Trophy for run-
ning from Ladysmith to Che-
mainus on November 11. Many a
guy in search of a job has walked
this road, but these Pavement
pounders who’ll do the course on
Remembrance Day are doing it
for fun—and they’re going to do
it in a hurry, too. :

island recreation centre instructor,
who arranged the inter-city chase,
is planning to enter his best run-
mers in Wamncouver’s big cross-
country race on December 4.

Empire Games

MONTREAL. — Barbara Howard,
sprinter, and Yvonne Dingley, hurd-
ler, broad and high jumper, both of
Wancouver, were named this week
by Irene Wall, national secretary of
the Women’s Amateur Athletic Fed-
eration of Canada, as two of a team
of seven to represent Canada at the
British Empire Games in Australia
next summer.

Others selected for the team were:
Robina Higgins, Winnipeg, field
event star; Jeannette Dolson, Toron-
to; Aileen Meagher, Halifax; Isobel
Bleasdell, Montreal, all sprinters;
Evelyn Goashawk, Winnipeg, broad
jumper and sprinter.

Qn the Canadian bowling team se-
lected for the Empire Games will be
four bowlers from British Columbia.

Bob Gray, president of the BC as-
sociation, has been named captain
of the team, and the other three
from this province will be A. S. Reid,
Dick Adam and John Fleming.

This selection was made by the
Canadian Lawn Bowling Council fol-
lowig recommendation by the BG as-
sociation.

VERNON.—Endorsation of a $25,-
000 by-law this week will permit com-
pletion of a sports arena fully
equipped with artificial ice in this
city. An earlier $25,000 by-law pro-
vided for most of the construction
work. Ice hockey ranks as a lead-
ing popular sport here, but only
natural ice has hitherto been avail-
able. It is planned to feature boy
lacrosse in the summer.

LONDON.—The light heayyweizht
championship fight between John
Henry Lewis of California, the title-
holder, and Jock McAvoy, of Eng-

land, provisionally arranged for

November, has been cancelled.

thousands of soccer fans are await-
ing the game between Wales, cham-
pions of the international tourna-
ment and undefeated in last year’s
three matches, and Scotland.

Wales is retaining seven of the
players who last year helped to Zain
a 2-1 victory over Scotland, while
the Seots haye picked five from
Glasgow Rangers and two each

from Aston Villa and Hearts.

In the opening game of the toura-
ment last Saturday Ireland was
beaten 5-1 at Belfast by a faster

The Tigers failed to take full ad-
vantage of their opportunities when
they met MRadials, although they

by far tthe brightest of the Tigers’
forward line which, somehow or an-
other, failed to click.

verted a penalty against Bus Mce-
Lean and Mike Wilkins had added
another, McNeill put Royals on top.

brought the score even with a fluke
