| Summary of the New Pictures

OW the New Film Alliance sizes the new pictures up:

THINK FAST, MR. MOTO: Figuring Peter Lorre as the Charlie
Chan of Japan: to wit, Mr. Moto, who unravels the threads of the mystery,
catches up with a fast-moving gang of gem smugglers, and uncovers the
identify of Virginia Field, caught in the gange’s meshes.

BROADWAY MELODY OF 1988: Sophie Tucker and Judy Garland,
2 newcomer, run away with the show, which, incidentally, is all about
hhorse-racine and show business. No matter about the story; it's enough
thet Sophie and Judy sing and Eleanor Powell tap dances. You'll en-
joy yourself.

THE ROAD BACK: Universal has changed the ending, so that Hrnest
{John King) is re-united with the girl he loved before the war, who, in
the first version, turned him down. They yow to forget war and bring
up their children to know nothing but peace. The film closes with flashes
of men marching, and war budgets increasing all over the world. Despite
an ending which is still weak, the picture is moving and well worth seeing.

MR. DODD TAKES THE ATR: Successor to Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
in name alone. Picture brings Kenny Baker of Sunday night radio fame
to the screen. .

Holiywood Won’t Recognize “Creators
OLLYWOOD—The further they go in collective bargaining the
More Hollywood’s famous names learn what a delightful sense of
humor the producers have—in their own interests. Directors are the
most recent victims of the producers’ gentlemanly attitude, and they're
still smarting under the blow.

The Screen Directors Guild (while it was not at all necessary) thought
the polite thing to do, in presenting their demands for collective bar-
gaining to the producers, was to mention the Wagner act. The pro-
ducers, in a desperate maneuvre to wreck the guild, have made known
that they are perfectly willing to deal collectively with assistant di-_
sectors and business managers, who are junior members of the guild,
but that by a labor board precedent, the directors themselves cannot
<ome under the Wagner act, because they are “creative” workers.

The directors’ guild has on its rolls 157 of the 161 eligible directors
and 8381 of the 337 eligible in the junior division, as well as 28 associate
Members, in sundry related, unorganized crafts. The guild is at a loss,
dt seems, how to answer the dear, dear producers who refuse to rec-
ognize the directors in order to spare their artistic feelings as “creative”
workers. But on one point, the guild’s mind is made up: Their union
will not be split, and they will be recognized, or not at all.

Film Survey Becomes International.

OM New York comes the second Film Survey of the Associated

Film Audience of America. While we've disagreed with them on
s0mie points (namely, The Road Back), this outfit is doing a splendid job.
The movement, incidentally, has become international. G I, George,
until recently Hollywood correspondent for the French paper Ce Soir,
fas left for Paris, where he will set up world headquarters for Associated
Filmi Audiences. Such a world service is the only answer to pro-Hascist
and anti-labor films which issue from the celluloid mills of Hollywood

Errol Flynn to Write Novel on Spain.

RROL FLYNN is reported getting ready to write a novel about the
= War in Spain. He is said to have discussed his plan with Ernest
Hemingway while the latter was here... . Incidentally, did we ever
tell you that Hemingway turned down an offer of $50,000 to write a
Sereenplay at a major studio? He said he couldn't take it, because he
Was needed in Spain. He’s on his way there now... . Gloria Stuart,
another one of Hollywood's thespians who wields a mean pen, has had
one of her poems, titled You Are Gone, set to music by Richard Tauber,
who will include the song in his concert repertoire next year. ... Best
Performances in June, just announced by the Sereen Actors Guild, were
Claudette Colbert, as star of I Met Him in Paris, and Margaret Dumont,

in the supporting cast of A Day at the Races.

Junior Actors Demand Showdown.

J AT trouble in the Sereen Actors Guild, which we forecast recently,
i has come to a head. Five hundred junior members have signed a
petition demanding that membership meetings be held. The officers
have always been remiss about calling the members together, and the
junior members (extras) have no vote at all in the organization. Fol-
jowing this petition, a showdown in the near future seems inevitable.
Hollywood's actors, now that they haye been organized for several
years and are recognized by the producers, want to have some voice in
runnine their own union affairs. We wonder if there is any connection
between this crisis and guild Secretary Kenneth Thomson’s decision
not to do a stage play in New York. He feels the suild can’t do without
him for three months.
