Organized Labor Here Will Assist Attention of Labor Council to US IMPORTS CUT Reiterating the stand of the last Trades and Labor Con- gress, Secretary Percy Ben- gough declared that union men should not buy German or Italian made goods, because they are definitely on the “We do not patronize” list, in reply to a short address made by A. M. Stephen, provincial president Canadian League Against War and Fascism, at the Trades and Labor Council Tuesday. Stating that the League would now be known as the Canadian League for Peace and Democracy, Stephen told delegates that Canada had not been as efficient in the boy- cett of Mascist-made goods as the United States, which, he said, had cut down German exports to that country to 50 per cent of normal. “And this loss of trade was not due to influence by Jews in. the USA, as Hitler claims, but because the AF of I, applied an effective beycott,” declared Stephen. Espionage Uncovered German Consul Linked 100 Nazi Tanks For Spain Useless War Ministry Returns Them to Factory When Parts Manufactured by Workers Sympathetic to Spanish People’s Front Found Defective OPPOSITION TO WAR PLANS PERTURBS NAZIS. (Special Correspondence) BERLIN, Germany, Aug. 19.—Readiness of German work ers to enter into active struggle against Nazi war policies aimed at Hurope’s democracies and, above all, at the Soviet Union, have been revealed in recent demonstrations and vari- ous incidents. Despite the strict censorship im-@ posed, news of these demonstra- tions has leaked out and, for all its elaborate precautions and severe penalties, the Reich has been un- able to prevent the truth about Nazi aggression in Spain becoming known to millions of the German people. Im one pit in the Ruhr coalfields the miners refused to work over- time when they heard of the bom- bardment of ‘Almeria, giving as their reason that they did not want to work for Franco. A few weeks previously the pits “Minister Stein,” “Achenbach” and “Victoria” re- fused by an overwhelming majority to work on Sunday on the same grounds. The latest compulsory collection of “voluntary” contributions, ob- tensibly for a new “Hindeabureg”’’ airship, met with such a solid re- sistance in all parts of the Reich that it had to be suspended by a special decree issued by Herr Frick, minister of the interior. One hundred tanks, ordered by the war ministry for service in Spain were returned to the manu_ facturers, the Daimler Works of Marienfelde, because of defective crankshafts and bearings. The Management gave as a reason for ish people. For the same “crime” 21 workers of the electricity works of Aachen were sentenced to terms of penal servitude ranging from two to eight years. These are only a few recent ex- amples illustrating the methods of intimidation with which the Ger- man government hopes to combat the sympathies of the German people for the Spanish People’s Front. But déspite the most brutal reprisals, the most frenzied cam- paign of chauyinist incitement, the government cannot extinguish the flame of enthusiasm and sympathy with the Spanish people. The great mass of the German population is following the course of events in Spain as closely as if it were their Own cause. The defeat of the Itali- ans at Guadalajara roused the fac- tories to a veritable paroxysm of joy. It is not in vain that the German General Staff is so anxious to ascer— tain the feeling among the popula- tion with regard to a possible war. The provocation of German Fascism in Spanish waters is a danger signal heralding another werld massacre. But the attitude of the German peo- ple towards that provocation is at the same time a writing on the wall which augurs ill for the Fascists. Boycott Wilkinson Hits Out At BCElectric Ex-Alderman Advocates Public Cwnership Here ADDRESSES VETS Ilustrating his lecture with a number of picture of natur- al water power resources in BC, Ex-Alderman Tom Wil- kinson of Vancouver, a pro- ponent of public ownership of these resources, gave an in- structive and witty address at the yeterans’ hall, 340B Cam- bie street, last Thursday, tak- ing as his subject “A more prosperous British GColum- bia.” His main point, that the institu- tion of public works, employing those able-bodied men at present without work, would in a few. years be a paying proposition to the peo ple; was proved conclusively. Ex-Alderman Wilkinson cited On- tario projects, Seattle, and Tacoma, where the original cost of establish- ment had been recovered from con-— current earnings and in the special eases of Chanute, Texas, and Ponca City, Oklahoma, all residents were living tax free. The speaker provoked laughter when he referred to G G. McGeer and his universal label of “agita- tors’’ applied to any who disagreed with him. He quoted McGeer as saying “T will have a parade in this town if I am the only man in it/” Wilkinson said that the city coun cil should not require convincing after seeing men literally fighting to shovel snow last winter. Stating that he was a member of a citizen organization 8,000 strong, who were digging into these things, the ex-alderman compared Vancou- ver with Seattle on the question of street lights, showing that the latter had 26,000 to the former’s 10,005; and that a Winnipeg alderman had reported to him that $5 was all that was required to light a 7-room house there, while $10 was needed in Vancouver. “We in Vancouver are told to these deficiencies that the workers had deliberately caused them out of sympathy with the Spanish Peo_ ple’s Front. Similar incidents oc- curred in a motor-car factory fo Central Germany. What is shown here and in many other manifestations of the strug-— gle for freedom in Germany is the tremendous influence of the Span- ish events. “If Fascism wins in Spain, we shall be lost for genera- Ad!
