No Union Splitting in B.C.

HE decision of the special convention of the
Federation of Woodworkers in Tacoma
jast week to form a new International union
under the banner of the CIO marks a new step
in Labor history, a step in which progressive
trade union opinion sweeps aside all fake and
illusory obstacles and marches united towards
greater organization and achievement.

The Green-Hutcheson machine was defeated
on all points. They based their case on red-
baiting and procrastination, and lost.

“The Communists control the CIO,” “The
Reds are destroying our unions,” “Roosevelt
takes orders from Stalin.” It didn’t work so
they closed with a feeble, “<The time isn’t ripe”
plaint. They even tried to distort the statement
of the BC District Council to make it appear
that BC loggers are against the CIO. Tt didn’t
work, either. :

One hundred thousand loggers from Maine
to Oregon and the Northwest demand a better
and fuller life. The CLO has ushered in a new
era for the American worker. It has struck
the shackles off the hands of Labor. It has
demonstrated that Labor can go out and win

Vigilantes, thugs, Mayor Dore of Seattle,
hooligans, stool-pigeons, Mitch Hepburn of On-
tario, the owners of the Gariboo Gold Quartz,
finks, murderers, provocateurs of all deserip-
tions are used to slander the CLO.

The old red herring stinks to high heaven
and the “reproach” of “Gommunism” is hurled
against the CIO to prejudice the workers
against it and herd them into sate and sure
boss-controlled company unions.

This i8 old stuff to lumber and sawainill work-
ers of the Northwest. They have had it served
with different trimmings for the last thirty
years. Now they are done with it.

Col. Edgett of the Citizens’ League won't
have to worry any longer whether the loggers
are going CIO or not—they have gone. c
all Bill Green can do is to “deplore” the split
which he and his gang alone engineered, to
froth at the mouth because rank and file mem-
bers of AF of L. unions stand solidly with the
CIO in its magnificent struggle for unioniza-
tion and action.

The British Columbia delegation at the spe-
cial convention made its position clear. It stands
golid with the decisions of the Federation of
Woodworkers of which it is a part. An identity
of interests make this unity between American
and Canadian loggers imperative.

When Hutcheson’s man Friday, Abe Muir,
slandered the BC loggers and sawmill workers
because “they worked with a lot of damned
Chinks and Hindus,” he didn’t prejudice the
American loggers against their Canadian
brothers. : ;

All he did was to show the calibre of his
kind and destroy what little prestige he might
have possessed. The BC loggers will maintain
their unity and affiliation with their brothers
in the USA and their umty and atiliation
within the AF of L in Canada. __ : :

Tf they are compelled to relinquish their
affiliation with the United Brotherhood of Car-
penters and J oiners, they will strive for direct
affiliation with the Trades and Labor Congress
of Canada, atiliation and unity within the Ca-

dian trade union movement, :
ae there is any splitting done jn Canada it
won't be the lumber and sawmill workers that
will do it. Their desire for unity within the
‘Trades and Labor Congress 1s already well
known and in this they have the fullest support
of their American brothers. Lhe next move 18
up to Hutcheson.

Work and Starvation

HE so-called work and wages scheme cooked

up by Alderman Pettipiece is nothing

more or less than a scheme to cut the relief

allowance. What is more, while the amount a

family receives 1s less than before, the head of

the family has now to work for the smaller
allowance.

Until the Pettipiece starvation work plan
was put into effect, a family of six received
$42.30 per month and in cases of extreme need.
was given im addition a small allowance for
clothing. Now a family of the same number
receives but $40 and the under-nourished head
of the family must work 10 days for it, he
must pay his own carfare, and recelves nothing
extra by way of allowance for clothing.

Out of that $40 he must pay rent and pro-
vide food, clothing, and other necessities for
six people. The excuse given by the baby-
starving Pettipiece is that in so large a family
there MAY be someone who can earn a few
dollars to augment the pittance the head of the
family is permitted to earn. :

Single unemployed men without depen-
dents are excluded altogether from the work
provided by the city. With the project camps
closed down and unemployment mereasing, as
shown by the laying off of men‘in the railway
shops, the unemployed single men are denied
relief and told to hunt for non-existent jobs.

Assuming that the rate of 50 cents an hour
paid by the city is a fair one, the number of
days a destitute worker is permitted to work
does not allow him to earn enough to provide
a half decent living for himself and his family.

A publie works project worthy of the name
would assure uot only a decent wage, but also
that the worker would have the opportunity to
work as many days per month as workers 10
unionized industries. And there should be 0
exclusion of menu without dependents from the
work.

The Second Y ear

HE government and people of Spain have
entered the second year of armed defence
of their demoeratie rights and privileges, for
the freedom of their country from the servitude
that the mutinous generals, traitorous landlords
and big capitalists, in collusion with German
and Italian fascism, would impose upon them.
The boast of Franco that he would be in
possession of Madrid on October 12th of last
vear was not made good because of the heroic
defence put up by the Spanish people aided
by the anti-fascist volunteers from many coun-
tries.

The hundred thousand German and Italian
troops, the German and Italian airplanes, tanks
and munitions while doing appalling damage
to the country and butchering tens of thousands
of non-combatant women and children in cam-
paigns of unprecedented frightfulness have not
broken the morale or fighting spirit of the
Spanish people or their allies of the Interna-
tional Brigades.

Franco, Hitler and Mussolini were aided by
the criminal “ny on-ntervention” pact which pre-
vented the lezal Spanish government from pro-
euring sorely needed arms and ammunition,
while permitting Hitler and Mussolini to pour
troops, tanks and bombing and purusit planes
into Spain, was engineered by the Baldwin gov-
ermment and maintained by Chamberlain and
Eden.

The theory that the way to prevent world
war is to appease Hitler and Mussolini by yield-
ing to their blackmail has been exploded; for
the more that is conceded to these rayenous
beasts the more insolent they become im their
demands, and the bolder they are in their ag-
gression.

And now Eden is proposing—on eonditions
__that all the powers grant belligerent rights
to both Franco and the Spanish government.

That the British government has not granted
belligerent rights to the Spanish government
while the latter are engaged in putting down
armed rebellion constitutes definite support for
Franco and an endorsement of the intervention.

eranting recognition of the Fascist gang of
pirates and despoilers of Spain as a belligerent
is even worse.

All possible assistance must be given to the
Spanish people and the anti-tascist battalions
of the International Brigades, especially to the
heroic members of the Mackenzie-Papineau
battalion, by all who desire that international
fascism shall not extend its barbaric sway- For
the defence of democracy as against fascist re-
action in Spain is at the same time a defence
against a similar curse in Canada.

Withdraw the Provincial Police

VER at the service of the employers, when
there is a struggle on between them and
their workers, the capitalist papers have been.
printing lying stories about the number of men
who have gone back to work in the Cariboo
mines where a strike is on. A few days ago
a story appeared in which it was stated. that 180
were at work. This is sheer lying propaganda
for the bosses and its purpose is to break the
strike.

Latest reliable reports from the Cariboo dis-
trict state that not more than 80 men are work-
ing in the struck mires, and these are not es-
perienced miners, but scabs brought in by, and
under the protection of, the Pattullo-Pearson
strike-breaking, seab-herding provincial police.
And that is not all that the provincial police
are doing for the mine owners to break the
strike. They are practicing provocation in the
effort to cause clashes with the striking miners
in order that public sympathy for the strikers
will be alienated.

For some time there have been 30 of these
police in and around Wells doing their dirty
work for the bosses with indications that their
number will be added to as the strike continues.

The miners are not only fighting against the
owners of the mines in the district and their
police; they are fighting against the eombined
power of the mine owners’ proyinelal organiza-
tion and their foreign fellow shareholders. The
combination of mine companies of B.C. are
guaranteeing a eontinuation of average profits
to any company engaged in a dispute with its
employees. This is how far the combined resi-
dent and absentee mine owners have already
gone in their determination to prevent genuine
trade union organization in the province and to
establish company unionism.

Such a combination with such a policy con-
stitutes a danger to the entire trade union
movement in B.C. and the whole trade union
movement should be aware ot the danger and
mobilized to meet and cope with it.

Mass protests must be sent to Pattullo and
Pearson, demanding that they desist trom
using their police as strike-breakers, and all
possible support given to the striking miners.

Tt is reported that the Pattullo government
is going to have a line painted along the middle
of B.C. roads. That will be alright if the
line has no width; if it has there will be no
room for a car on either side.

FASHION NEWS. — Ottawa announces
that stream-lined models will be popular in
suits for the unemployed, a stunning eect
being achieved by slimming the waist-line and
omitting pockets. — J. S. Wallace in Daily

‘Trotskyism Aids

ROTSKYISM continues in

its services to interna-
tional fascism and counter-
revolution in many ways. Al-
ready it has eaten its Way
into the CCF in British
Columbia to the extent that
the CCF has rejected a
united front against reaction
at home, prevents unity of
the CCF with the Communist
Party on the issue of support of
the Spanish people in their struggle
against the forces of Franco, Hit-
ler and Mussolini, and has brought
about the withdrawal of CCF sup:
port for the League against War
and Fascism.

The dangerrof Trotskyism as an
alien element within the labor
movement is strikingly shown by
the pro-Franco rcle of leaders of
the Independent Labor Party of
Great Britain in which the Trot-
skyites have Jong been intrenched.

Only the presence and effect of
the poison of Trotskyism can ex-
plain why a reformist party which
for years denounced the Russian
proletariat for overthrowing cap-
italism in a revolutionary way in-
stead of doing the job in a way

acceptable to the capitalists, has
now become “Marxist” and up-
braids the Communist Inter-

national and the Communist Par-
ties of the world for having “‘de-
parted from the revolutionary
path.”

Slanderous Pamphlet

One of the latest efforts of Trot-
skyism to defend its criminal re-
volt in Barcelona against the
Spanish government in support of
Franco has been made through
Fenner Brockway, a prominent
leader of the ILP, in a pamphlet
called “‘Truth About Barcelona,” in
which the author repeats the slan-
derous statements of Trotsky that
the foreign policy of the Soviet
Union and the Communist Inter-
national is based on a desire to win
Britain ad otehnr capitalist powers
as allies, and in order to succeed
will not support or sanction revolu-
tion in Capitalist countries where
British and other capitalists have
invested capital, but hold the work-
ers down to a defence of a bour-
geoise democratic republic.

This Trotskyist charge flows
from the false theory of the Per-
manent Revolution which Trotsky
has preached for many years and
which Lenin combatted and thor-
oughly shattered. Yet these same
people who haye been saying that
it is impossible to build socialism
in one country—even in a country
of the area, population and natural
resources of the Soviet Union—
and therefore the country -which
has overthrown’ capitalism, should
bend all its efforts towards IM-
POSING Communism upon other
countries whether the people want
it or not, and whether or not there
is a revolutionary situation in the
country or countries upon which
Communism is’ to be imposed—
these very people seek to cover up
the Franco-inspired revolt in Bar-
celona with the false claim that
the workers were making an at-
tempt to overthrow capitalism and
set up a proletarian dictatorship
in one proyince (Catalonia).

Stupid Assertions

It may be true that the workers
of Barcelona were better organized
and more militant than the work-
ers of any other province in Spain
and when the Franco revolt began
they heroically resisted the rebels.
But that does not prove that they
were ready for the proletarian rev-
olution or a proletarian dictator-
ship, for the majority of the Bar-
celona workers were Amarchists or
under Anarchist influence and
therefore opposed to government
of any kind.

The idea of the people of one
province in a country with a cen-
tral government setting up a pro-
letarian dictatorship and building
socialism is ridiculous, especially
so coming from people who Say
that socialism cannot be estab-
lished in a country of 180 million
people, 99 per cent. of whom are
determined to establish it.

The revolt of the Trotskyists and
Anarchist uncontrollables in Bar-
celona was not an attempt to over-
throw capitalism and set up the
rule of the workers. It was a
counter-reyolutionary putseh of the
most criminally treacherous char-
acter, timed when the Loyalists
were fighting with their backs to

the wall defending Bilbao, when
the sending of government treops
toe quell the Barcelona revolt be-
hind the lines prevented the Send-
ing of sorely -needed reintorce-
ments to the hard-pressed govern-
ment forces, and all planned and
executed for the express purpose
of rendering aid to Franco, and
done in collaboration with him-

Trotskyites can get away with
covering up their dastardly coun-
ter-revolutionary crimes for a time
by masking them under revyolu-
tionary slogans and wultra-leftist
phrasemongering. But as in the
Soviet Union where the foul breed
is being smoked out and exter-
minated, so in Spain when their
traitorous revolt was crushed and
some two hundred of the leading
eriminals, including the Trotskyist
leaders, Andres and Gorkin, were

arrested, documents were found
which directly connected the Trot-
skyist organization, POUM, with
the Madrid Fascist organization
and Franco.
Fascist Link-Up

Documents seized from Madrid
organization working under orders
of Falange Espanola (Fascist) re-
vealed that, (1) leading members
of the POUM carried on indirect
communication with Franco’s head-
quarters at Salamanca, (2) that
they were in direct personal com-
munication and consultation with
the leaders of the Fascist organi-
zation in Madrid (a part of
Franco’s Fifth Column), (3) that
POUM is regarded by the agents
of Franco as in a position “to be-
come an effective and firm support
of our movement,” and (4) the
POUM was also in direct communi-
eation with the Germans and re-
ferred to them as “our foreign
friends.”

@ne message, on the back of a
map, written direct to Hranco him-
self, reads In part as follows:

“iy fulfilment of your order I
myself went to Barcelona to talk
with the directing member of the
POUM, N (Andres Nin, Trotsky-

ist leader—M. B.).

“J informed him of all your di-

rectives. The lack of communi-
cation between him and you is
explained by the radio break-
down ,but the transmitter began
to work 2gain while I was still
there.

“You will certainly have had
an answer about the funda-
mental problems. N. implores
you and our foreign friends that
I shall be the only person charg-
ed with communication with him
He has promised to send to Ma-
drid a few men to activise the
POUM there, and with these re-
inforcements the POUM will be-
come, as at Barcelona, a firm
and effective support for our
movement.”

And it is the POUM that Brock-
way salutes as the IULP’s “brother
party in Spain.”

The Cover-Up

Is it any wonder that Brockway,
in his desire to protect the whole
counter-revolutionary Trotskyist
organization, and the POUM in
particular, and to cover up the
connection of himself and other
TLE leaders with it, declares in his
pamphlet that Nin is not now a
member of any Trotskyist organi-

zation although he “used to belong’

to one. But Nin, together with
Gorkin, is a leader of the POUM,
the ally of Franeo, Hitler and
Wnussolini, and is known to the
whole world as the leader in Spain
for many years of the Trotskyists
and is their leader today.

An indelible stain was made up-
on the name of the 1LP when 2
section of the IUP contingent
fighting with the Loyalists in the
International Brigade deserted the
front and went to Barcelona to
join the revolt against the very
government on whose side they
had previously been fighting, when
unity of the proletariat and all
anti-ascist forces is indispensable
for victory over Franco and his
foreign Fascist allies.

The Trotskyists, Nin and Gorkin
were defended by Brockway and
his fellow Trotskyist [LP leaders
even when they were fighting for
Franco in the streets of Barcelona
and sending out a message
to their deluded followers saying:
“Tt is necessary to continue and
intensify the offensive,” while
from their colleague, the blood-
thirsty rebel general Quipo de
Tjano, in a broadcast from Seyille
and directed to his fellow traitors
in Barcelona, came similar instruc-

tions: “Continue the attack. Don't
cease firinge.’’

False analogies and parellels of
Trotskyism are repeated by Brock-
way in order to deceive and mis-
lead honest and Sincere radical
workers. For instance, he insults
revolutionary workers of the past
and present by trying to justify
the Barcelona treachery by liken-
ing it to the struggle carried on
by the Bolsheviks against the Ker-
ensky government and also to the
struggle of the workers in the
Paris Commune. To make this
false parallel he is compelled to
make the monstrous assertion that
the present People’s Front govern-
ment of Spain is carrying on.

Kerensky went into the service
of reaction by driving the people
back into the predatory robbers’
war on the Side of the imperialist
powers with which Tsarism had
allied itself. Tsarism was over-
thrown, but Kerensky kept up an
alliance with reaction represented
by capitalists, landlords and other
reactionary elements and was
stifling the revolution.

The Communards of Paris were
fighting the -reactionary govern-
ment headed by Thiers, who was
plotting to sell Paris to Bismarck
and betray France.

If the Spanish (foyalist govern-
ment is carrying on a counter-
revolution, what is Franco’s role?
If it is as Brockway says, the
Loyalist government and the
people who support them [auld
not be fighting against Franco,
but would be fighting with him
and against the Trotskyites and
Uncontrollables.

Was Counter-Revolution

Brockway tries to justify the
traitorous work of the POUM by
the excuse that they were moved
to take up arms against the gov-
ernment because there was a revo-
lutionary crisis in Barcelona and
their place was on the side of the
workers. By thfs he implies that
there was a revolutionary situation
in which the time for proletarian
revolution was ripe. This is not
true eVen of Barcelona. The situa-
tion in Spain was, and is, a crisis
not of the kind implied by Brock-
way, but one of counter-reyolution
carried on by Franco. The duty of
all workers is to defeat the Franco
counter-revolution, as the Bolshe-
viks did when they participated in
the struggle against counter-revo-
lutionary revolt and as the Paris
Communards did when they took
up arms to save Paris—and France
—from being betrayed by Thiers
into the hands of Bismarck as
Franco is trying to betray Spain
into the hands of Hitler and Mus-
solini.

The horrible facts of the Trot-
skites’ treachery in Spain- have
been exposed. The Communists of
that torn and bleeding land and
of every country in the world, in-
eluding Canada, have repeatedly
denounced the POUM leaders as
traitors acting on behalf of F'asc-
ism just as the Trotskyites in the
Soviet Union were agents of Hit-
ler’s Gestapo and the Intelligence
Service of Japanese imperialism.

The Citrines and Thomases pro-
tested to the Soviet government
against the execution of the trai-
tors in the Soviet Union, and
when Gorkin was arrested in Spain
the DLP leaders had the impudence
to protest to the Spanish govern-
ment,

Warning to Canada

The Bareelona-Madrid exposure
of the Trotskyists is further proof
of the counter-revolutionary role
of these agents of Fascism; it 1s at
the same time a warning to the
workers of Canada. For already
in BC Trotskyists have so wormed
their way into the CCF and gained
so much influence in its councils
that they have prevented it from
joining with other working class
bodies in support of the cause of
the Spanish people, which is at
the same time the cause of the
people of Canada.

Trotskyism began in a small way
in the DLP, but like a cancer it
grew and the shameful spectacle
of TLP members fighting for Trot-
sky and Franco was the result.
The only way to Ceal with any
malignant growth is to tear it out
by the roots in the earliest pos-
sible stage of its growth. And that
is the way that it should be treatea

in the CCF. If this is not done
the GCF will become another
POUM.

Youth Is Finding A Way

with delegates standing on their
feet cheering and applauding.
Soon they burst into the strains
of “Q Canada,” sung in French
and English, to symbolize the
unity Canadian youth had
achieved in that exciting moment.

Communist League of the
seven conditions was welcomed
by delegates. But, asked some,
how could the Young Commu-—
nists affirm belief in God and
agree to the right of individuals
to private property, to internal
peace and cooperation between all
social classes, How could they
endorse a proposal that the Con-

gress condemn subversive doc-
trines?
After all, they would argue,

aren’t Communists opposed to re-
ligion? Don’t they advocate the
class struggle? Aren’t they Op-
posed to private property and
don’t they teach subversive doc-
trines?

Apparently these who raised
these questions were victims of a
false interpretation of the Com-
munist position on all of these

questions.

The doors of the YC are not
closed to young people who be-
lieve in God. The only condition
of membership is that they be
prepared to study socialism. Those
in the YC who are atheistic, and
there is a number, have no quar-
rel with anyone’s religion. Today
young people must organize and
unite to fight the danger of war
and must understand that bullets
do not respect a person’s religious
belief, his nationality or creed.

Then, on the question of inter-
nal peace and cooperation be-
tween all social classes, there is
also some confusion.

The Communists wish to unite
all sections of the Canadian popu-
lation against the financial over-
lords of St. James Street, who
violate the hard won rights of the
people. They are the ones who
hold subversive doctrines. They
are the people who work hand in
hand with international finance
and attempt to bind us to their
war plans; who wish to impose
Fascism and war upon us and to
subject us to intolerable living
standards. They are the real
enemies of the Canadian people.

But possibly the one point

around which there is more mis-
understanding than any other is
the right of individuals to pri-
vate property. It is a queer para-
dox when those yery people, the
rich, who are responsible for
large numbers of Canadian peo-
ple losing their homes, their cars,
their farms and other property,
are the very people who attempt
to make Canadians believe it 1s
the socialists who threaten their
interests.

WN INTERESTING Incident oc-

eurred after acceptance of the
seven conditions. A couple of ©&
actionary French-Canadians pre-
sented a resolution in one of the
sessions asking that the Young
Communist League be ousted
from the Congress as a subversive
organization.

So unpopular was this, that all
delegates completely ignored the
resolution. So strong was the
sentiment against it that the
question was not ealled on the
resolution, When this plan failed
they struck on another idea- They
would try to get the French-Ca-
nadian youth caucus to present it.
But much to their displeasure the
caucus decisively voted it down.

Once In Proverbially all roads
A Year used to lead to Rome;
- now they lead away
from Rome, to Abyssinia and
Spain, bringing misery and suffer-
ing as their main contribution to
the sum of human experiences.

Factually, however, there are
roads that do not lead either to or
from Rome; and in time there are
occasions when all roads lead to
points in space far distant from
Rome. Sunday, August 1, is one
of these rare occasions-when alr
roads will lead to Windermere
Park, between Hastings Park and
the beach, when the Communist
party stages its annual picnic.

In one réspect it will be like the
landing of the Soviet flyers at San
Jacinte, to which the people of the
countryside came in eyery kind of
conveyance: automobiles, buck-
boards, hay wagons, bread wagons,
artillery cars, mules, bicycles and
on the hoof. They will come to the
picnic from the big town and from
the sticks, but there will be lots
of room for everybody.

The sports program will outdo
Hitlers Olympics; there will be no
Nazi propaganda, and the prize
list is big enough to draw even
Joe Louis. Be sure to get there
early, for, in the words of the
society editress, ‘“‘a good time wild
be had by all.”

American conference to meet at
Buenos Aires, the purpose of
which was to isolate the American
countries lying between Greenland
and Patagonia from the political
diseases of the Old World—the At-
lantie and the Pacific oceans were
to be constituted a “cordon sani-
taire’’ to prevent the infection of
the New World.

The conference had hardly fin-
ished its deliberations when they
were all Knocked cockeyed by 2
couple of Soviet planes connecting
up the new world with the old,
without worrying about either the
Atlantic or WPacific. This sani-
tary cordon was easier for them to
break than the one their ‘‘allies’”
placed around them in 1919-22 ana@
demonstrates to us that there can
be no ‘‘cordon sanitaire’ that will
effectively separate one part of the
world from another while each is
artially dependent on all the others,

Wot only are the planned actiyi-
ties of the Soviet workers a prac-
tical demonstration of the fact that
the capitalist system is played out,
but the indirect outcome of their
plans is a further exposure of the
decadence of the bourgeoise world.

The success of the well-organized
Polar flight of the Soviet airmen
is more pronounced when com-
pared with the failure of the pur-
poseless stunt round-the-world

wares of her commercial backers.

Attention, All A couple of

eee years ago, the
Unionists! workers at the

gas plant of the BC CGollectric con-
cern that supplies Vancouver with
low-grade gas at high-grade prices,
attempted to form a union to pro-
tect their wage rates and working
conditions. All the weight of that
rapacious corporation was used to
prevent the success of their ef-
forts; the most active of the gas-
workers were fired and got back on
the job only through the pressure
of the gas consumers who threat-
ened to revert to other fuels. The
result is that there is no union at
the gas works today.

Besides gas, this public utility
octopus boosts its dividends by the
sale of coke, a principal by-product
of the gas manufacturing industry.
Among the users of this non-
union coke and gas are many good
trade unionists who today should
eonsider the question of the car-
bonaceous fuel they use, now that
union miners on the Island are
producing coal which is necessarily
in competition with the BC Col-
Jectric coke and gas.

Placing this coke on the unfair
list by all trade unionists and sym-
pathizers would work to the ad-
vantage of the workers in two
ways—it would strengthen and en-
courage the recently formed UM
WA miners local at Nanaimo and
at the same time break down the
resistance of the Vancouyer Gas
Co. to the organization of the mer-
cilessly exploited gas workers.

Trade unionists, do not allow &
few dividend hogs to stand in the
way of the wave of trade union Or
ganization sweeping across the
States and Canada and if you must
have coke, demand that it be made
by union labor and delivered by
union truck drivers. You will be
giving the gas workers a break!

Every attempt of the reaction-
aries, the pro-Fascists, the Trot-
skyists, to split the Congress was
defeated by the common senss
and genuine progressive desires of
the overwhelming majority of
delegates who realized the meceS=
sity of a united approach to the
many complex problems eonfront-
ing Canadian youth today. On
this basis, as a result, youth has
taken a stride toward and—what
is more—has made continuous
organized progress possible,
