Page Iwo Former Scab Organizer Of ‘G-Men’ Here Organization Boys Head Has Unsavory Labor Record IS CITY POLICEMAN By LESTER McMYNN “Except for a $500 grant from the Gyro Club,” the Van- couver Province informed its “the Junior G-Men of this city are readers last Saturday, managing on a shoestring.” Featured in the week-end edition, with a two-column head reading, “Movement may extend through city. New branches planned by @onstable-Sponsor,” of the exclusiveness of this outfit by a story of two lads who, after sev- eral rejections, won their way to membership into the ‘select ranks or the Junior G-Men by the sheer force of their enthusiasm.” Appeals have reached the sponsor, Constable Eve- Jeigh, to set up clubs all over the city, it was stated. That parents objected to Byveleigh herding their youns sons and daughters together for sleuthing purposes, is admitted in the state- ment that “some parents were SUS- picious that a city policeman Was trying to organize a2 network of ‘stool pigeons,’ ” put the constable explained to his interviewer that this was absurd. Boys were not ¢rained to chase criminals, but to jJeave cleanly and develop respect for jaw and order, etc. Allowing for all speculations as to the meaning of ‘etc,’ the Advocate instructed me to do a little sleuth- ing myself. The trail started at Destined for the Church, Eveleigh instead found the surplice displaced by policemen’s blue, and although *Jet out’ from the Burnaby force, he succeeded in getting placed on Vancouver s “finest.” Warming to the chase, I succeed- ed in unearthing the reason for the mingled diszust and chuckles when the name of theic one-time peace officer was mentioned. Tt appears that he secabbed on his fellow - unemployed workers when they were putting up 2 great struggle against forced labor im Burnaby 2 couple of years 480- “Worse still. From a military point of view it in no way changes the course of the war. From the point of view of morale, it will of course pep up the spirits of the rebels for some time —and their spirit can stand some pepping up. But the reaction throughout Spain is like that of a lion being smacked on the tail. It roars in anger and surprise, and woe betide those nearby! Intermationally the Fascists may make a new bid for recognition, but the world, in spite of its tolerance of the farce of non- intervention, can see only one thing rising out of the ashes of Bilbao— the soul of the people battling against overwhelming odds to pre- serve its liberty. Not that Bilbao’s fall is not a blow, but it has turned out to be the sort of blow which infuriates an entire people. Bilbao had become a Jezend. We here thought it would never fall. Why? Not because we felt that the Basques had sufficient arms, planes and men, but because —. of the miracle that held out so long. We began saying: “Tf they haye held this far against indeseribably then a miracle may happen and they may hold out forever.” But the mechanized might of Hit- ler and Mussolini was too much for the Basques, who were obliged to fight almost unaided, isolated from insufficient aircraft for defense. Will Avenge Bilboa. The reaction to Bilbao’s fall ean be sensed already in Madrid. Militia- men on leave, hearing the news on the street, shook both fists in un- controllable anger. I heard one roar- ing to groups of comrades: “Lets eet back to the front! Let’s wipe the earth with them! Bilbao, Bilbao, you shall be avenged!’’ This is no false heroics. That sroup listening to him compressed their lips and a look came into their eyes that frightened me as IL watched. This is the most eloquent example of what high circles mean by saying that Bilbao’s fall will so infuriate the troops as to make it difficult to hold them back. Bilbao’s fall will give no appreci- able aid to the Fascists as far as withdrawing troops for other fronts is concerned. The Basques still hold important mines and industrial ‘yones northwest of the city. The Fascists find it difficult to bom) and shell away at this centre. There- fore an infantry attack is necessary, and on those terms the Basques can more than hold their own. The Fascists still have plenty on their hands in the Basque country. Meanwhile, on the central and Ara- gon fronts, the government con- tinues to advance. Hieh cireles be- jieve one of two things will happen now: either speedy sovernment vic- tories on the cent ral and fronts will see a new concerted counter-offensive in the Basque country. or slow eovernment
