The smashing of the last core of
this military espionage system is a
stunning blow. Proof, not of a
‘crisis’ of Soviet power, but of the
intensified espionage system of capi-
talist countries.

Qne hundred thousand members of
the Labor party signed a petition
for Communist affiliation and, al
though the Bdinburzh Labor party
conference rejected the application,
592,000 votes were secured in favor
of acceptance of the Communist
party as part of the Labor party.

In reference to the Communist
partys campaign jn support of the
Spanish republic Pollitt declared:

‘wwe have saved the honor of the
British Labor movement.”

In the British battalion of the
International Brigade are 400 Com-
munist party members, including
five district organizers.

Gives Report

Speaks On Youth Con-
gress at Open Air
Rally

Maurice Bush, popular provin-
cial secretary of the Young Com-
munist League, spoke to some 500
people at an open air meeting on
Powell street grounds last Sunday, |
on his impressions of the Canadian
Youth Congress, held in Montreal
last month, from which he recently
returned.

The wide representation there,
coupled with the fact that almost
full unanimity was established,
were outstanding features of the
congress, Rush told his audience;
and the progressive nature of the
congress findings “was 2 milestone
on the journey of Ganada’s youth,
to economic amelioration and
peace,” he added.

Previously, on Saturday, a suc-
cessful banquet and dance at which
Rush was the guest of honor was
staged by the YCL at Orange hall.

On January 5, 1937, three
members of the Pacific Coast
Marine Firemen, Har] King,
Ernest G. Ramsey, and Frank
J. Conner, were convicted in
Oakland, Cal., of a crime of
which they knew nothing—
the famous ‘ship murder.”

Four attorneys of the three
innocent men went into court
against a machine that wanted con-
victions in Spite of evidence. These
attorneys accomplished what ap-
peared to be an impossible job;
they brought the truth of a strange
case into court in spite of all the
machine could do.

Today the King-Ramsey-Conner
Defense Gommittee has enlisted the
aid of hundreds of unions in the
USA in the struggle to secure their

release, although it now appears
certain that this case will come be-
fore the Supreme Court.

The tremendous interest and in-
dignation raised is easily traced to
the work of the tireless defense
committee, a xepresentative of
which came to the office of the
People’s Advocate to tell of a visit
to the prisoners in San Quentin
penitentiary, and incidentally, to
Tom Mooney, California’s most
famous prisoner.

Mass Protest.

Our visitor, a close friend of Earl
King, told a moving story of his
fine spirit and calm nerve which,
she said, has carried him through
several past attempts made upon
his life because of his trade union

“Yes, Earl’s hair is very stay
now. Sort of salt and=pepper, with
a lot more salt than pepper, al-
though he is in his early forties.

While placing her greatest faith
in the mass protest which is grow-
ing daily, this member of the King-
Ramsey-Conner defense has made
a close study of the legal aspects
and chances in the case, and the
following argumentation is inter-
esting:

“Studying the brief, I feel that
our legal points are so convincing
that I cannot help expecting a Tre
versal. Even though this particu-
jar case deals with labor, by up-
holding the decision, a precedent is
set for murder trials, inconsistent
with any previous decision that can

murder than laboring people. Two
self-confessed accomplices testified
against the three men and both of
them had an obvious motive for

Reverting back to the activities
of the defense committee, our in-
formant told of the large numbers
of pamphlets issued on the case;
the many novel methods of money-
raising to cover costs, and the num-—
ber of sub-defense committees that
have sprung up on the coast.

“Tom Mooney knows from bitter
experience all the despicable fram-
ing methods used,” she said. “and
during my visit with him he dis-
cussed, in a keen manner, all the
angles and urged me to give every
encouragement possible to the
three, as it is this belief of inno-
cence in his own case that has en-
abled him to hold his head high all
through the years.”
