Vancouver, B.C., Friday, October 16, 1936 Why Hitler Howls HE indignant howls of protest raised by Hitler after the speech of Maurice Thorez, Secretary of the Communist Party of France at Strasbourg last Sunday, will cheat no one who knows the Nazi program in relation to France. Thorez ascribed to the Nazi god nething more than his own blasphemous pronouncements. “ The version of “Mein Kampf” (“My Struggle”) by Hitler— the Nazi bible—that cireulates in Germany differs im its outline of foreign policy for foreign consumption in English, French and other languages. The inevitable hatred of that mad demagogue towards I-rance had to be toned down for the outside world, but still must be made an inspiration for Nazi yilitarist and im- perialist aims. All that Thorez from the German a couple of them: “T+ must be understood that in general the will of the Ger- man nation should no longer be limited to mere passive defense, but on the contrary, should be steeled for a final, active settlement with France in a death grapple for the realization of German aims.” “Ty, the annihilation of France, Germany sees merely the means for our uation to cbtain full development jn another di- rection. Our foreign policy will only have been correct when there are 250,000,000 Germans, not crowded like cookies in a factory, but free peasants and workers.” « see Aristocratic Spain under a dem- Venom. peratic regime, these priestly trad- ers in the name of God would bring the torch of Torquemada back toe burn eyery vestige of liberal thought and political freedom out of country; they would again inflict © the tortures of the Inquisition on the common people of Spain rather © than see them improve their lot at the expense of Feudal grandees and j militarist thieves. { It is natural they should take this attitude since the Catholic Church is the largest landowner in the Peninsula. Two years ago twenty- one million Spaniards had one hun- dred and ten thousand priests ly- ing off them, one priest to every 200 people, but no attacks were made on the Church or its priests except when they took up arms against the Republic, when they used the churches, monasteries anc nunneries as arsenals and machine- 2un nests to shoot down the sup- porters of constitutional democratic government that they hate as does Father O’Boyle and Archbishop Duke. The lies and slanders on which Archbishop Duke bases his appeal are already answered by members of his own faith and profession. The priest, Father Juan Garcia, broad- casting from Madrid about a month ago, stated that the proletariat has always respected those priests who have propagated real Christianity and it is probably useless to refer the Archbishop of Vancouver to @ letter of a Catholic Bnelishwomanr in the October number of “Woman Today.” This lady, Monica Whately, was in Spain during much of the fighting and offered her letter to the Catholic press in England but could not get it printed. Her observations were that nuns and priests went about ‘without fear that they. would be shot or mu- tilated so long as they were acting as priests. On the other hand, she. tells the tragedy of Biratou, where the fascists massacred 2000 young Loyalists for defending their Goy- ernment. These Loyalists showed n0 fear and only made one request— that they be allowed the ministra- tion of a priest before being shot. One of the fascists put off his mili- tary uniform and donned his priest ly garb and performed the neces= sary ceremonieés. The common people Are They; are not the concer Blind? of the high-placed ehureh dignitaries, oF they would not be with the Nazis and fascists. The Catholic Prince Hubertus Lowenstein has warned them already of the suppression of all Catholic activity in Germany and now the Duteh Catholic paper in Lemburg, Holland, opposes the marriage of the heir to the Dutcb throne to a broken-down WNaz princeline, because in his country “the State is suppressing many things which are sacred to our free and Christian people.” Again the high priests have chosen Barabbas! We must support fhe Spanish people’s Government man.—‘“‘Unity.” and ‘law and order.’ pea: § tac ahnE Ain, pibbabas lect pp Adhrbemced Semana ee into this pamphlet : ee im of and promiscuous | ~ which many know next to nothing | Ni so The spectacle of a prince of the t on a throne, dominating the opening ie the | BLS STS tayo i tle pe Sis a oes wees LAE
