C. JONES. "To my dear son Pat: I hope this letter reaches you as it laves me, enjoyin’ fair to middlin’ ood health. In yer last letter ye Said ye'd loike to take a holiday and come*to Vancouver for the Jubilee. ~ Well, me dear boy, ye know Id loike to have ye with me 2il the toime, God knows I would, but the Jubilee isn’t worth seein’. Ask annybody that's seen it and they'll tell ye the same. The Mayor says (t's sorry I am that he’s got .an Trish name, the scut) that ivery- body should wear a Jubilee smile, but ye could smile loike a laughin’ thyena and at the same toime could mot close yer eyes to the fact that there’s a lot of people gittin’ evicted fer not being’ able to pay their rint. I'm tryin’ hard to make both inds mate so ye'll have a roof over yer heard whin ye tome home in the fall. So stick it out till thim extry gangs close down. Besides ye can’t do anny good lavin’ the job now. its the last thing yer dear father, of lovin’ mimory, would've thought of He'd have stuck it cut till the bitter ind, and i’m hopin’ yell be as good a man as him.*iI was proud of ye whin ye organized yer relafe camp and brought thim into Vancouver a year 2gf0, and wish yer father could’ve lived long enough to see it. I know at's terribul hard work thandlin’ steel rails. but yer father often had to do it whin he was blacklisted and couldn’t git annythinge better. Don't go workin’ too hard, tearin’ yer insoides and rupturin’ yerself. if the boss says to lift somethin’ and ye think it’s too much fer one man tell him so and make him git more min. But at the same toime whin there’s a bunch of ye liftin’ Somethin’ always hold up yer own ind. Don’t iver try to shove off anny of yer work on annybody ilse. And whin yer shovelin’ sand don’t try to do it all yerself. Don’t wait —unti--you shovel begins to—smoke trom the friction before ye slow up. iI see ye complain about the grub. Well ye'll all have to git to- fither and kick about it. Maybe it ain’t the cook's fault. It's: loikely the graftin’, belly robbin’ contract- ors that supply the food won't give him daycint stuff to cook. Ye'’re -entoitled to good grub, ye're payin’ enough fer it, and ye’d better git the boys togither an’ go after it. The only thing in the Jubilee worth seein’ is the big arch in Chiny town. it was brought all the way from Chiny fer the occasion. It's a hun- dred fate high and was built with- out seaffolds. They built the frame- work as they wint up and covered it on the outsoide with pictures and ernymints as they came down. There ain’t no nails in it, it’s all toied with strings of grass or some- thin’, and the frame is made of thousands of bits of bamboo poles. it's the only thing in the Jubilee ye can look at fer nothin’. TI hope ye don’t git lousy there. If ye do the only way to kill thim insects is to boil yer underwear. And if the blankets in the bunk cars git lousy git the boys together and go and raise hell with the foreman and make him clane the place up. Remimber, they ain’t givin’ you fellers the board, ye’re payin’ fer it, and payin’ too much if anny- body should ast me. I Hope ye got the papers I sint you, and I'll send ye some more whin I can spare a few cints. I’m lookin’ forward to October whin thim slave pens of extry gangs close down and ye'll be home with us once more. Good bye, Pat darlin’. Yer lovin’ mother, WNORAH MALONEY. P.S.— Maybe the Chinese arch ain't quite a hundred fate high, but it must be all of sivinty-foive. P.S. Agin — Whativer yis do be sure and do it in a bunch. $20 IN CASH GIVEN AWAY FREE $10.00 Every Tuesday. 310.00 Every Thursday. Three Big Shows in One!
