AID GOVERNMENT

In giving this order, Colone] Count
Casimir de la Rocque, commander
in chief of the Croix de Feu (Hiery
Gross), the largest fascist league,
declared: “Everything must be in
readiness for the day when the Peo-
—ple’s Front government collapses in-
evitably in an orgy of corruption
and chaos ... We must know where
to find the responsible anti-fascists
in order to deal with them individu-
<ally and swiftly in their own homes.”
The fact that Leon Blum is a Jew
has given the fascists an Oppor-
tunity to try a new and hitherto (in
France) neglected method of propa-
ganda. The trick that worked so
well in Germany in befuddling the
minds of the lower middie classes
Gs now to be tried in France. The
Jews of the world, from Wall Street
to the Kremlin, are said to be be-
hind Blum for no other reason but
to ruin France by pushing her into
an early war with Germany. Vitup-
eration heaped upon the heads of
the Jews in the French Fascist press
these days is unimaginable in its
wileness and silliness. oe
Working class leaders in France
do not consider that Fascism has
been finally beaten by the recent
victory of the People’s Front at the
polls. They consider that the fas-
cist leagues must be dissolved, the
more since the Croix de Feu is ac-
quiring new members at the rate of
30,000 a week. Of course, new ad-
Frerents to the Socialist and Com-
munist parties are coming in even
faster. Nevertheless some disquie-
tude remains.
Several Socialist municipalities
are organizing a workers’ militia
and are installing sirens on the
roofs of the city halls to call the
workers out in the event of an at-
tempted Fascist putsch. The Re-
publican Guard has asked the
Blum government to clean out the
fascist sympathizers from its of-
ficer corps. The Minister of War
has warned officers that at the least
Sign of disobedience or hesitation to
obey the orders of the People's
Front government, they will be dis-
missed £rom the army and tried for
¢reason. Another body that will get
4 thorough cleaning out is the
Surete Nationale or political police,
for many years the most bitter red-
paiting organization in the country.
Leon Blum bas scrupulously re-
rained from alarming the upper
qiddle classes by saying that no
jaw-abiding citizen need fear the
coming of a People’s Front govern-
ment. But he has said at the same
dime: “We will tolerate no inter-
ference with public liberty. We are
peaceful men, averse to violence and
pHloodshed, but our Fascist Oppo-
nents must know that we have the
power to strike and strike bard.
We will not hesitate to use that
power if they provoke us.”

VALUABLE CORRADE

VANCOUVER, June 113.—Fun-
eral services took place at 11 am-
today for H. Buchanan, who was
a staunch supporter and salesman
for our press for the past year m
Nerth Burnaby.

Mr. Buchanan died of diabetes
last Monday morning in the Gen-
eral Hospital, having entered that
institution for treatment the night
previous.

The dece2zsed leaves to mourm
his passing, his wife, and a family
of six, the eldest of whom is six-
teen.

The staff of the “B.C. Workers’
Wew's” extend their deepest sym-
pathy to the bereaved family.

A growing community spirit and
increasing participation in welfare
work on Vanecouyer Island, in
Wanaimo and district, is reported
by Mrs. Galitzsky, the organizer for
the Island branches of the Women’s
Labor League.

A Sub District Council has been
organized where delegates attend
from branches at South Wellington,
Extension, Chase River, and Nan-
aimo. The women are seeing to it
that a branch of the Parent-Teacher
Association operates in every school.

The Finnish branch at Sointula
reports suecess there gaining 12 new
members for the W.L.L., Enelish
speaking branch. This is valuable
work und Vancouver women should
realize how much more could he
done for the children through
P.T.A.’s, owing to the close associa-
tion with the teachers and Schools.

Great unity has been established
in Nanaimo between the C-C.F. and
the W.L.k. These two bodies co-
operated in providing free supper for
500 children on May Day, also im
arranging Burns celebration and
supper, clearing $75.00, as well as
holding mass meetings on Inter-
national Women's Day and Mothers’
Day. This activity is Showing ré-
sults in an increase of 15 new mem-
bers. :
Several children’s groups have
been organized and plans are well
under way for a summer camp cater-
ine to 80 children. The League
Against War and Fascism, and Dr-
Telford's radio fund was supported,
besides progressive papers.
Grievances have been taken up
in most eases, successfully. $6.80
was obtained for a single relief re-
Gipient who was forced to work
when sick. A few weeks later the
full allowance of $12.80 was forced
from the relief.

A CALL TO UNITY

Sir— While the Vancouver bosses
are planning a Jubilee celebration,
the Empire bosses are planning ano-
ther slaughter. The rumbling of the
war drums can be heard growing
louder and more frequent. Capital-
ism in its last stages appears to be
ready to risk all in a last desperate
throw. that will involve the workers
of many countries leaving a trail of
misery and suffering far beyond
that left by the last great war.
Just how much of the war talk
is fact, and how much is propa-
ganda for the purpose of making
the people war-conscious, is hard to
determine, but it seems clear that
all the preparation is not for noth-
ing. It is surely the duty of every
worker to lose no time in lining up
against war and fascism, because
before long it may be too late. We
may expect at any time some “act”
committed that will furnish the pre-
text for war. There is always one
provided when the time is ripe-
When the capitalist press of Eng-
land lJauds a buzzard like Hitler as
a dove of peace, then peace is inse-
cure indeed. As well to say that
the gallows is the guardian of our
national order and good govern-
ment. There can be no peace in a
world where a decaying capitalism
maintains its dying clutch on the
destinies of mankind.

Truly did the speaker in last Fri-
day evening's B.C. Workers’ News
broadcast say, that this is no time
for dissention in the ranks of the
workers. Lay aside those petty dif-
ferences, and unite in the struggle
against the menace that threatens
to sweep over the world at any mo-
ment.

Tf there ever was a time when
unity is needed, that time is now.
If ever there was need for united
action in a united front, surely that
time is right now. The forces of
reaction are strong, but not strong
enough to turn aside the power of
a united working class—if that class
will unite and stay united.

Canned Salmon Section
of C.M.A. Ignores
Joint Body

The cannery operators challenge
the right of fishermen to collective
bargaining. On June 9, they pub-
lished a list of prices on raw fish
that is lower than last year. They
refused

to meet and negotiate
prices with the fishermen’s Joint
Committee.

Their list of prices is a challenge
to the fishermen “to take it and
like it.” Two independent operators
negotiated and sigsmed an agreement
with the Joint Committee on Blue-
back salmon for the 1936 Season.

The group of chisellers, calling
themselves the “Canned Salmon
Section” of the Canadian Manu-
facturers’ Association, ignored the
representatives of 2500 or more or-
ganized fishermen and hope to see
the fishermen accept their prices
Without a murmur. We have to
tell them that they are doomed to
disappointment; for already the
Joint Committee has taken action
and passed the following resolu-
tion: ;

“That because of the failure of
the C.M.A. (Canned Salmon Section)
to make any offer on other cate-
gories of salmon (other than Blue-
backs) to the Joint Committee and
even ignored the letters written to
thm by our secretary, which means
that they refuse to deal with the
representatives of 2500 organized

fishermen, therefore be it resolved:
That this Joint Committee stands
firmly for reasonable fish prices,
covering Seine and Gillmet caught
Salmon. And furthermore: That this
Joint Committee instruct their re-
spective memberships that action is
necessary through mass meetings,
ete., and on the fishing grounds,
to achieve reasonable prices, and
that preparations to this end be
made at once.

In earryinge through action on this
resolution, the Fishermen and Can-
nery Workers’ Industrial Union ar-
ranged a meeting for all fishermen
at the Silver Slipper Hall on Thurs-
day night, June ii, to hear a report
by the Joint Committee. They are
also organizing a mass meeting at
Alert Bay on the afternoon or June
21. This meeting will be composed
of Gillnetters and Seiners, and will
decide the policy and tactics to be
undertaken on the-. grounds to
achieve prices that will give them a
reasonable weturn for their labor.

Fishermen rally to all meetings,
called by the Joint Committee or by
the individual unions, to defend your
hard earned incomes, for prices that
Will guurantee a living for your-
selves and families, to meet your
expenses on gear and the trip to and
from th grounds, Stop the imposi-
tion of the “two for the price of
one’ clause, in the cannery oper-
ators’ proposals. Back up your Joint
Committee.

Considerable confusion and lack
of Clarity on the situation in France
exists in the minds of large numbers

read that a motion was passed that
the seale be raised for the children.
The council deliberated a long time.
A vote was again taken to raise the
seale for the children; this time the
eouncil voted 50-50 with Skea, Har-
ris. McCauley opposing. The Reeve
then cast a favorable vote. It wa=
due to the efforts of Councillor Bray
that made the amendment to rase
the scale for the children.

The delegation threatened that
they are willing to <o to jail if the
Seale is not raised in general.

GENEVA, Switzerland, June 6—
(By Cable to ALP)—Victories of the
Soviet Union in the sphere of Social-
ist construction takes a prominent
position in the report of the director
of the International Labor Office of
the League of Nations at its twen-
tieth session here.

Stating that the industrial output
throughout the world has again
risen, on the whole, to the level of
1929, the very first page of the re-
port points out that Soviet industry
has already passed the 1929 level
by 200 per cent, or, in other words
that it has produced three times as
much as at the beginning of the
economie crisis of the capitalist
world.

In a special supplement, the re-
port gives a comparative table of
attempts at economic planning: in
Germany, Italy, Portugal and other
countries, the results of which a
manifest insignificance as compared
with the “tremendous social ex-
periences of the Soviet Union.”
Reeardinge the Stakhanoy move-
ment, the report declares it to be.a
powerful lever for raising wages and
yeducinge prices owing to the enor-
mous increase in the productivity or
labor. -

For a proper estimate of the situ-
ation in the U.S.S-R., the report
points out, it is necessary to recall
first of all that “in the U.SS-R.
there are neither aristocrats mor
capitalist or even a well-to-do bour-
geois middle class.”

Basing itself te some extent on
communications: which Lorwin and
Abramson, two members of the
Workers’ International Relief made
to the International Labor Office
after an exhaustive tour of the
Soviet Union in 1935, the report in
summing up, Says that the concrete
results of the efforts of the U.S.S.R.
are “beginning to show themselves
in the rise in the standard of living.”

of the Pacific Coast District 1.L.A.
installed the Vancouver charter
with the Coastwise Longshoremen
and Freight Handlers, at their meet-
ing Monday night. Today, the once
familiar blue and white TL.A. but-
ton can be seen on the lapels of
many waterfront workers:

The new local is No. 38-126 I.1.A.
Though issued to the coastwise
group, the charter is all-embracing,
a general longshore charter, includ-
ing coastwise. deep-sea, cargo hand-
lers, cargo repairers, etc.

Since the strike of last summer,
the deep-sea men, the predominent
longshore group in the port, have
been unable to force any recognition
from the employers, whereas the
Goastwise group have been success-
ful in having their men despatched
through the hall to different com-—
panies. Because of this, the coast
wise employers are unable to direct-
ly discriminate against men for
joining the I.L.A.; therefore, follow-

Morris paid tribute to the unity of
seamen and longshoremen of the
U.S. Pacific Coast. He suggested
that the seamen were originally the
leaders in sponsoring and framing
the Maritime Federation of the Pa-
cific, and stated the unity built up
would be long enduring. He took to
task the international officials of
the Seamen’s Union for revoking
the charter of the Sailors’ Union of
the Pacific. 4

are satisfied that the road is now

thereby totally at the mercy of the
employers, they are determined to
work their way back into the fold
of organized labor. In this they will
