Lumber Workers Will Get
Only What They Fight For

Not Big Heartedness of
Bosses, But Militancy
of Men, Cause of In-
crease in Wages

The situation in the lumber in-
dustry has called forth the usual
emethods of resistance from the lum-
er manufacturers. As you rightly
pointed out in your editorial last
wveek the real fight that the lumber
arons will put up is against unions.
During these last two weeks they
have been jumpine about like a cat
on a hot stove. They cannot oppose
the union this time on the grounds
that it is a “‘Communistic” union.
Wow they oppose it on the grounds
that it is “foreign.” They: are now
for Canadian unions. They are
against “Communistic” ecotrol. Any
mwnion that does not kneel down be-
fore them will be Communistic.
Last week an extra edition of a
paper Known as “Labor Truth’’ was
mailed to workers in the sawmills.
This is the second edition that has
been mailed wrapped up and post-
paid to men working in sawmills in
the last two weeks. The whole of
the paper is devoted to an unprin-
cipled and vicious attack upon the
Dumber and Sawmill Workers’ Union.
Besides mailing a copy of this un-
scrupulous rag to the workers a
jarge bundle of the same is placed
at the time clocks. When this con-
stant pressure is kept up and no
reply is forthcoming it will have
some effect.
Strikes Effective
The B.C. lumber manufacturers
ery to high heaven that strikes are
useless ,They, by their own actions,
deny this argument. After the strike
had developed in 1934 they raised
the wares by means of 8 minimum
wage law. After the strike call went
out two weeks ago, in some cases
when the question was merely under
descussion, the mills and the logging
eamps raised wages. One should not
raise wages at times like these Mr.
Lumber Manufacturer! If yo do
this you increase the workers’ belief
in the efficacy of strikes when other
means fail. You are not opposed to
unions? Yet you fire every man who
Joins one! You are ready to meet
your employees.at any time? Yet
you discharge those who come to
you with complaints! You are always
ready to be reasonable, you say, yet
you refuse to treat with, in any
<eollective way, the men who make it
possible for you to operate your
plant at all. You feel secure in your
powerful position; yet the whole his-
tory of labor proves that you will
have to relinquish that position. You
refuse to recognize the union, yet by
your actions you have already rec-
ognized it and will continue to rec-
ognize it. You carry on the most
scrupulous attacks by means of your
paid tool, T. McInnes, yet you talk
about fair play and loyalty.
25 Gents per Hour
Diuch has been said about wages
and conditions of work. One would
think that the sawmill worker was
livins in the lap of luxury and that
he only wished to be left alone to
enjoy his earthly heaven. What are
the facts? The facts are, that in
many of the mills the wages paid
are the bare minimum set by the
Industrial Relations Board. In many
of the milis the provision regarding
the allowing of 25 per cent to be

paid at the rate of 25e an hour was
flagrantly violated so much so that
in some mills almost and in some
cases more than 50 per cent of the
employees were paid 25c an hour.
The new order of the board changed
this clause to read 10 per cent. This
eaused the mills to discharge many
old employees and hire a few youths
at 25¢c.

The industry is supposed to be
booming yet the majority working
in it-set 35c an hour or less, $2.80
a day. This to support a family and
pay rising rents and meet rising
living costs. Can one live in uny
standard of decency on such a wage?
Let the general publie be the judge.
The difficulty is that the sawmill
worker has very little opportunity
to place his case before the public.
The capitalist daily papers are
notoriously biased and unfair. The
workers cannot run quarter page
advertisements to state their case.

Tf whe workers in the industry
wish to get a fair share of the value
that they produce they will have to
fieht for it. Anyone who says any-
thing to the contrary is either a
charleton or a demagogue.

American Capital

The B.C. lumber manufacturers
denounce the A.F. of L. (American)
union, yet they themselves repre-
sent mainly American capital, Capi-
tal is international. Wherever prof-
its are to be garnered there capital
will be found. And whether in Can-
ada- or Timbuctoo, capital will be
united to fight labor.

Labor must take a leaf out of the
book of the employers and forget
national borders.

We must recognize that our in-
terests are interlocked with those of
our American brothers. We cannot
and must not renounce the prin-
ciples of international support be-
cause of the frenzied scruchings of
a paid lackey, or the appeal to prej-
udice by the cultivators of racial
hatred.

Of course our American brothers
are interested in our struggle. If
we remain unorganized and at the
merey of the bosses their position
is menaced, they stand to lose what
they fought so hard for. Are we to
repudiate their support in order to
win the plaudits of those who would
erush us?

We must not be so silly, there
can be no talk of prosperity when
the average wage is so low; when
the workers in the industry are in
constant fear of expressing their
opinions. We must have a union in
the industry; of this there can be
no doubt at all.

FISHERY FLOAT
ON FALSE CREEK

VANCOUVER, May 18.—A dele-
gation from the Fishermen and
Cannery Workers’ Industrial Union,
interviewed the “Harbors and Util-
ity Committee” of the City Council
today, on the question of a fisher-
men’s float, to be situated at the
east end of False Creek. The com-
mittee gave favorable attention to
the proposal, to the extent, that
they huye arranged a special meet-
ing of the committee for Tuesday,
May 26, with the city engineer and a
member of the Harbor Board pres-
ent, to further discuss the needed
float, with the fishermen’s delega-
tion. ;

Nicholas Shaak, trekker, who was
so badly beaten about the head on
the night of the riot, that while in
prison he fell down in line for food.
Tt was only after persistent delega-

tions from trekker prisoners so the

warden and after the Regina
Mothers’ Committee had interviewed
the attorney-general about his con-
dition, that he was removed to-the
prison hospital On the day follow-
ing his admittance to the prison
hospital he was removed to the ob-
servation ward for the insane at the
Reeinn General Hospital, where he
lapsed into a pitiful State, unable to
recognize anyone, and haying no
control over any of his bodily func-
tions. After hovering for six weeks
between life and death, he finally
passed away. Thus Bloody Dominion
Day claimed its second victim.

Mr. Stephen, an elderly Regina
citizen, died several months after
the Dominion Day riot at his home.
The clubbing which he received on
Dominion Day on the Market
Square, was directly responsible for
his death according to a statement
Siven to the press by members of
Jnis family; Kicked by a horse, re-
sulting in cancer which caused his
death.

Seriously Wounded

Three trekkers, names unknown,
received serious injuries, one being
shot in the foot, another in the
forearm and the third receiving a
bullet wound in the head.

David Lyons, 26, who has lain on
a hospital cot since last July, and
who will never fully recover, re-
eeived a bullét in the stomach and
lower bowel.

George Phillips received bullet
wounds in both legs and had to re-
turn te hospital several times be-

cause he had ben discharged too
soon.
Red Clarkson, shot in lungs.
Phillip Dignan, Regina citizen,

shot in the back, this man sued the
city police but the case was not al-
lowed to come up.

Stanley Rothecker, Regina citizen,
and hospital orderly, shot in the
spine and now paralyzed down one
Side. =

Mrs, Hungie, mother of a large
family and over sixty years of age
was knocked down by police and
one lee was broken.

Charies ©’Rourke, shot in the les,
and now lame.

Thomas McMurray, who spent
eight months in hospital, having
received a bullet wound in the leg,
and who now walks with a cane
and requires a special boot.

In addition to these there were
scores of other injuries, such as
Sunshot wounds in scalps, hands,
legs, and surface wounds in other
parts of the body. In addition there
were also of course Scores of bruises
and lacerations caused by clubs and
other weapons.

To Gate, eight of the QOn-to-Ot-
tawa trekkers have been sentenced
to terms of from six to eighteen
months hard labor in prison, on
charges of rioting and assault.
Those sentenced are as follows: Joe

Mott], 19, seven months; Sydney
Stevens, 26, seven months; John
Gallenger, 22, eight months; Jack

Weedin, 26, cighteen months: Ken-
neth Forsythe, 22, six months; Jack
Kyle, 33, seven months; Kellet Cole,
22, nine months; and Fred Nogami,
24, ten months rioting, and two
months assault, to run concurrently.
Because of the obviously con-
tradictory and perjured evidence
submitted by the police witnesses,
Minney, 22; Gasper Blum, 24: Morris
Dean, 22; and Scott Laimsden, 22.
the following have won acquittals
from the jury; Sam Coury, 22; Joe

Kindly permit me the space in
your columns ts draw to the at-

tention of your readers the injustice
that exists among the relief recipi-
ents in regard to rents. What is
termed as forty per cent of the
very meagre relief allowance con-
stitutes the amount allowed for rent,
clothing, fuel and household effects
to relief recipients. This amount
starts with five dollars a month for
man and wife with an additional one
dollar for each child.

As an example a family of seven
receives ten dollars with which to
pay rent, buy clothing and house-
hold effects also fuel which in most
Cases is cut in the woods, but the
problem of hauling it home is not
an easy one. In most cases the big-
gest portion of this forty per Gent
is paid for rent and in some cases all
of it, leaving a family in dire need
of clothing and other necessities.
This is the picture among the un-
employed on the North Shore.

This matter was discussed by the
Lynn Valley Unemployed Associa-
tion at their last meeting and steps
are being taken to correct these de-
plorable conditions. A meeting of
the above association will be held on
Monday, May 25, at S$ p.m., at the
C.C.E. Hall, Lynn Valley, and all re-
lief recipients and all those who
wish to assist in securine additional
rent allowances for these unfortun-
ate people please attend.

Charges Withdrawn

An attempt was made by agents
of the police to have six of the trek-
kers plead guilty on the promise of
suspended sentence; although they
were approached individually, the
boys, who have retained their old
organization, called a meeting to
discuss these overtures. They de-
cided not to prejudice the case of
their comrades now in prison in or-
der to go free themselves, so de-
cided to plead not esuilty as pre-
viously intended. Following this de-
cision, the police fearins further ex-
posures of their methods, withdrew
the charges against these six. Those
discharged are as follows: John L.
Smith, 26; Alfred Wells, 22; Mike
Mattiesh, 22 James Harding, 22;
Tony Costello, 22; and Mike Zacha-
ruk, 55.

The sentences being imposed upon
these Canadian youths are the sey-
erest in history for charges of this
nature.

Appeals have been launched in the
following cases: Jack Ikyle. Joe
Motl, Sydney Stevens, Jack Weedin,
John Gallenger, and Ienneth Wor-
sythe.

In these cases the evidence has
shown glaringly contradictory evi-
dence made _by prosecution  wit-
nesses. .

Right of Open Gourt Denied Public

Joseph Belabaeck, youthful trek-

Ker, who was only 15 at the time of
his arrest, and who was to have
appeared before the juvenile court
to be tried, has been informed that
Judge McDonald has been given per-
mission to preside in his case also
acting in the capacity of a juvenile
judge, and that his, Belaback’s case
has been postponed until Judge
MeDonald disposes of the other four
cases to be tried. The trial will be
held in Camera. We appeal to all
organizations and citizens to send
protests to Attorney-General Davis
of Saskatchewan, demandine tnat
this youth be tried in juvenile court
and that the proceedings be open to
the public.
Glaring Contradictions

Three million words of evidence

were submitted to the Regina Riot

enquiry Commission at Regina.
Judge Grown, chairman of the
commission, stated the he was sat-

isfied that the Dominion Day riot
started when the police arrested the
Qn-to-Ottawa trek leaders at a pub-
lie meeting on the Market Square
at Regina. The trek leaders were
held in jail for two months while
the court refused bail. Then after
great pressure was brought to bear
by the people, they were released on
bail ranging from seven to ten
thousand dollars each.

Then after a lapse of nine months,
the Attorney-General of Saskatche-
wan, made the startling statement
that he had made a close examina-
tion of the evidence submitted
against the trek leaders both at
their preliminary hearings and at
the Riot Commisison, and now, as a
result of his own study and acting
on the advice of the crown prosecu-
tor and the members of the Riot
Commission he was withdrawing
the Section 98 charges, because in
their opinions there was not suffi-
cient evidence to even warrant
bringing them to trial Yet the courts
of justice are sentencing young
trekkers on charges arising out of
the police attacking a public meet-
ing to arrest these same leaders, who
according to the testimony of the
police themselves, could have been
arrested at any time, and against
whom, after-nine months of time in
which to build up a case, the
charges have been withdrawn be-
eause there is not sufficient evidence
to even warrant bringing them to
trial!

Who are the Guilty Ones?.

There is a tremendous wealth of
material at hand to prove that the
police authorities, Major-General J.
HW. Merien, and assistant Com-
missioner Gol. S. T. Wood, of the
R.C.M_P., were responsible for issu-
ing the orders, the carrying out of
Which, precipitated the Dominion
Day riot and constituted the most
ruthless attack on the civil liberties
and democratic rights, for which, the
Canadian people for generations,
have fought and suffered imprison-
ment.

Do not allow these two individuals
Major-General J. H. MeBrien and
assistant Commissioner Gol. S. T.
Wood, who assumed a dictatorship
over the administration of law in
Canada, and utilized the -Canadian
police forces, endangering life and
property, in order to suppress Ca-
nadian youth, and silence its plea
for a better life, to shift the respon-
sibility for the shame of Regina
onto the shoulders of these same
youths!

Money is urgently needed to carry
on the appeals of these cases. Do
your part by contributing to their

last Saturday night.

A ballot was taken to determine
the best bout. The four six-minute

grappler, and our champ, Kit Car-
son, received the most votes, also u

Two eighty pounders, Gordon
Evans and Abie Dick, went on in
the feaiture event. The youngsters
put on an extremely good show to

erly the S.U-P.A. Sports Club is an
organization of and for the work-
ing elass youth. At present it is
eoncentrating attention on boxing
and wrestling, and when conditions,

will broaden out into other branches

a club in each locality or district
and in this way draw the youth into

B.C. Maritime Workers

SAN PEDRO,-May 19.—The con-
vention of the International Long-
shoremen’s Association which con-

vened here May 4 closed its ses-
Sions today.
Among the many resolutions

passed at the convention were: De-
manding restoration of the charter
of the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific
(revoked last summer by the Inter-
national Seamen’s Union head-
quarters because of the progressive
tendencies of the S.U.P.), protesting
discrimination of negro and other
colored workers; endorsation of
program and activities of the Com-
mittee of Industrial Organization;
for the intensification of the boycott
on Standard Oil products; demand-
ing release of the eight maritime
workers framed during the tanker
Strike of 1935; support for Mooney
and Billings; for support to the B.C.
maritime workers. Charters were
issued to the longshoremen of Van-
couver and New Westminster.

Charters for B.C.

Immediately upon the termination
of the B.C. maritime strike, Decem-
ber 9, the campaign for the re-organ—
ization of B.C. ports commenced.
That the efforts of the ex-strikers,
who pledged themselves to fight
the “Fink” hall program of the
employers has borne fruit, is testi-
fied to by the issuance of I.L.A.
charters to the Vancouver and New
Westminster longshoremen, by the
International Longshoremen’s con-
vention just concluded in San Pedro.
Wot only were charters issued, but

port of all I.L.A. members to the
fighting B.C. longshoremen.

Though issued to the coastwise
sroup, the charter for Vancouver is
for general longshore work, that is,
coastwise, deep-sea, shed men, cargo
repairers, ete. It is provided that
neither group shall encroach on the
territories of any other. The coast-
wise organization is in the most
favorable position to launch And
support a local at the present time,
and it is on the recommendation of
all local groups that the charter is
being issued in the name of the
coastwise organization.

The local has now been started on
its way. One thing must be borne
In mind: A charter does not mean
an organization. A charter is a
symbol of fraternity. To the long-
shoremen of B.C. it means that the
locals here have the support of the
longshoremen of the entire coast.

But the American longshoremen
cannot alone organize these ports.
The main task devolyes upon the
longshoremen of this province.
EByery ex-striker must do his utmost
to speed the thing alone. The em-
ployers are working desperately to
prevent progressive organization.
They have their company unions set
up in all ports, and through these
unions are again bringing back the
conditions which prevailed here dur-
ing the “Fink” hall days. Wage
cuts, speed up, discrimination can
only be prevented by a rank and
file organization. That organization
is started, the symbol is now about
to be hung upon the wall, let every
progressive maritime worker in B.C.
rally around the charters, and build
an organization that will prevent
Wage cuts, Speed up, elimination,
and all the other attributes of an
unorganized industry.

ception given to him on his ship’s
visit, Captein Bachmann, of the
Emden, in a short, crisp and biting
speech at the “German Day” cele-
brations held in the Kmights of
Columbus Hall, Sunday evening,
said that the Emden’s visit to -vari-
ous parts of the world was ‘“be-
cause of the German government’s
desire to establish a permanent re-
lationship between herself and other
countries.”

“And that,” he shouted, “is my
reply to the Communist Party of
Toronto.”

Today at 10 o'clock the Emden
cruised out of port on its way to
Spain where the reception is ex-
pected to be still cooler than that
received in Montreal.

The papers in the city all took a
rather apologetic tone when men-
tioning that the Emden left and
did not receive a civic reception.

The Communist Party of Quebec
had issued thousands of leaflets
during the week's stay of the Em-
den and had pointed out that Hitler
was not Germany and Germany not
Hitler.

Captain Bachmann, however,
wanted it to be known that, “today
