theatre-goers were enthusiastic over
the performance of ‘“‘Waiting for
Lefty’ by the Vancouver cast held
there last night at the Walker The-
atre. The house was packed, at
Jeast 1800 paying admittance. Press

that the play depicts “life in the
raw,’ but reporters evidently have

Literature

Recent papers from Japan report
serious concern of the political
police over widespread distribution
ef militant trade union and Com-
munist literature. Despite the mar-
tial law declared after the bloody
fascist coup of February 26, which
prohibits discussion or publication
of articles on these events, the coun-
try is flooded with unauthorized
pamphlets and leaflets. Eyen the
new minister of war, M. Terauchi,
found it necessary to issue a state-
ment against the rising flood of il-
jezal papers which in his estimation
are gravely undermining the pres-
tizge of the army and the conscrip-
tion system.

Cleverly Camouflaged
The political police are particular-
ly disturbed over the extensive in-
flux of radical Japanese literature
which they say comes from United
States. Despite extended and inten-
Sified scrutiny of incoming publica-
tions the cleverly camouflaged liter-
ature slips into the country in
alarming quantities. In their state-
ments the police descirbe the “dan-
gerous thought’ publication coming
into the country under such inno-
cent titles as ‘‘How to Play Chess,”
“The Rising Generation,” ‘“‘Nayal
Armaments of Britain and Japan,”
etc.

So extensive is the distribution of
this literature and so well is it or-
ganized that despite all police pro-
visions it reaches into every district
and province and even enters Korea.
The English language publications
like the ‘Japanese Chronicle’ write
witty editorials ridiculing the alarm-—
ist fears and statements of the police
whieh they say only adds prestige
40 the illicit literature, the quanti-
ties of which are no doubt exag-
eerated. But the seriousness with
which the police take this situation
is seen in the sending of two spe-
cial investigators to the Pacific

Some time ago Alderman Wil-
liams made a motion which, in
effect, amounts to giving city
foremen the dictatorial right of
classifying any married relief work-
er in one of the two following cata-
sories, “good worker” or “bad work-
er.” As a result of this motion we
find (this month) 60 workers were
discriminated against to the extent
of $3.20 to $10 and eyen more, ac-
eordins to the size of his family.

This seryes as a new tactic for
two Purposes:

First, to keep the unemployed
split up;

Second, to set a new low level
standard of living, by which to

gauge the amount that the remain-
ing unemployed can exist on

Thus it is obvious that if 60 mar-
ried men, with families, can live on
a lesser amount, the remaining
number of unemployed will also,
sooner or later, be reduced to this
level. This new tactic of discrimin-
ation serves a great hardship on our
wives and children. Though unor-
fanized, a number of these 60 work-
ers have put up a militant effort to
fight against the new “efficiency”
program of the city council; in some
cases have won out for this month
only. but as far as Gan be deter-
mined the vast majority are still on
the “blacklist.”

The following is just one case of
many: A young married relief re-
cipient, with a baby, was told at
the relief office that he was on the
“blacklist” and therefore could not
be given the ‘extra’ day’s work.
After running back and forth from
the city hall to the relief office, he
eventually succeeded in getting the
relief committee (of which Alder-
man Williams is a member) to re-

Battle With Police

WARSAW, Poland, April i18-—
(ALP)—Eigsht persons were killed
and 60 wounded today on the streets
of Lemberg when police attacked a
funeral of a worker killed Tuesday
by police.

More than 8,000 workers
for the funeral march and insisted
that the body be buried in a ceme-
tery. to which the only route lay
through the centre of the town.

Police Attack Cortege

Police attacked the procession,
with bayonets and afterwards
with gunfire but they failed to hold
back the funeral which moved to-
wards St. Bernard Square in the
centre of Lyov. Here a short meet-
ing was held on the spot where the
unemployed worker was killed.

Here again the police launched
an attack, using fire arms but again
failed to disperse the demonstrators,
who proceeded further following the
coffin to the cemetery where the
burial took place.

ALP)—Dating the decision back to
January 1, the Soviet Government
has placed the profits of each
separate factory at the disposal of
the workers in that factory.

This plan, announced here today,
will have far-reaching effects in
eyery part of the Soviet Union and
makes the workers in every enter-
prise the arbitors of their own wel-
fare.

MONTEAL, April 18—(ALP)—
“The real Germany is not in the
houses of government, but in the
political prisons and concentration
camps,” Prince Hubertus Loewen-
stein, former leader of the German
Catholie Center Party but now in
exile, told the German “‘Anti-Nazi
Day’? meeting at the Monumental
Wational Theatre here last night.

“The people’s front, working for
the national honor,” he continued,
“is becoming more active each day,
causing great alarm to the Hitler
regime.”’

Dr. Kurt Rosenfeld, minister of
justice in the Prussian government
of 1918-1919 and a deputy of the
Reichstag, addressed the meeting in
German. Dr. Rosenfeld once fined
Hitler 1,000 marks for contempt of

Coal Operators Back Down

Discrimination

CUMBERLAND, April 21.—At a

| mass meeting of miners, union and

non-union, on April 19th, a yote on
a standing motion to “down tools”
carried unanimously, with a 43-hour
limit set for the management of the
Canadian Colleries to live up to its
agreement made with the miners in
August of 1935.

Following the 1935 strike, and the
final closing of the dispute by a
Conciliation Board, Colonel Villiers,
manager of the Cumberland mines,
promised “as a gentleman” to rein-
state 45 discriminated men before
any new men were taken on.

The word of a “gentleman” differs
little from that of an exploiting
coal operator. The source of their
“sentility” is the unpaid labor of
the miner, and their method of se-
curing it is to get as much as they
can by giving as little as possible in
return, and aiming a blow at the
miners’? union whenever and -wher-
ever opportunity presents itself.

Four days prior to the strike meet-
ing, an individual named Williams,
just arrived in Canada from Wales,
was placed at work on the coal-
face. The union grievance commit-
tee took the matter up immediately
and reminded the colonel of his
promise “as a gentleman.” to rein-
state discriminated men before new
ones were taken on. The colonel
and his mine lieutenants got around
the union’s request by promoting
Williams to the position of a fire-

boss, thus technically taking the
ease (so the “‘gentleman’’ thought)

out of the jurisdiction of the union.

There was no less than ten of the
discriminated men capable of hold-
ing the position of fire-boss, but the
colonel ruled them out on the pre-
text of great concern for the safety
of the miners.

The Cumberland mines are the
most dangerous on the continent
from the standpoint of gas and the
possibilities of explosion. The miners’
erievance committee refused to ac-
cept the explanation of the colonel.
In the space of four days his “con-
cern” went through too many
changes to be genuine. When Wil-
liams was hired, it was to test the
alertness of the union; there was no

care then about the safety of the
miners. When the colonel found
the union alert to the interests of

the miners, he resorted to the sub-

miners a little in consideration of
their just erievances. Then the
“eentleman”’ convenientk left town
so that no committee could see him.

The miners discussed the issue
from every angle and agreed that
the union was faced with a prin-
ciple fight that would permit no
evasion of direct action.

day indignantly received the infor-
mation that the Hon. Norman Rog-
ers, federal minister of Jabor, had

able that labor be represented on
this commission.’’

“It’s a cheap insult to our intelli-
gence,” declared J. W. Bruce, in

part of society and cannot he
ignored.”

Bruce said the council should not

be satisfied with the appointment of
some one in the name of labor by
the government. “Majority of this

commission must be workers, in-
eluding those who are suffering
from unemployment — the unem-

of Saskatchewan has been ‘swamped’

trials. Nevertheless, he has ex-
pressed a determination to continue
with the trials of the remaining
twenty. We urge all supporters
throughout British Columbia to con-
tinue sending statements of support
and telegrams to the Attomey-
General and to Prime Minister
Kine. The first two cases prove
that the government is determined
to convict these boys, and if the
original charge is not proyen, then
another charge will be made to suit
the case, and this will be continued
unless public opinion and support
becomes strong enough to put an
end to it. Demand the release of all
the trekkers, and dropping of all
charges against them.
