On Wednesday afternoon last, a
delegation of the Mothers’ Council
appeared at the city hall to enlist
the support of our city fathers to
gain relief for the rejected camp
Dpoys. A further instance of intol-
erance, stupidity and inefficiency
was displayed by the aldermen, one
of whom, Alderman LembkKe, said
he had not the slightest sympathy
with the boys, and that if he had
to go to one of those camps he
would thank God every day of the
week for giving him a roof over his
head.

At a previous meeting of the city
council, Alderman Millar made the
remark, in answer to a question,
that all they could do was wait for
somethins to happen.

it appears that our belover pre-
mijer is not alone in pursuing the
policy of Macawber in waiting for
something to tur up.

Taxpayers should attend the coun-
<il meetings and see how the alder-
men work—like school] boys at play.
One of our members discovered that
Alderman Tisdale’s funeral bill was
paid by the council with taxpayers’
tooney. What a dreadful prank to
play on one who was so much
against charity!

Bunds can always be found for
these kind of things, but none to
feed the living. The Mothers’ Coun-
eil is determined to Keep up the
fight until justice is done these boys.

Expensive Pumping Sys-
tem Versus Cheap
Pipeline

Rather than instal a pipeline from
one of the many lakes around Kam-
loops where good drinking water is
obtainable, the mayor and city
council were successful in having a
by-law passed for the installation of
anew pumping system to take water
from the Thompson River for use
in Kamloops homes at a cost of
thousands of dollars.

A few days ago the local press

eartied a story about a number of
wild ducks having been found
dead in the river, and when exam-
ined, poisoning was given as the
cause. Eivery spring, Dr. Archi-
bald, health officer, has issued a
warning to the Kamloops citizens
to boil the water taken from this
river before using it for drinking
purposes.
-.some five years ago the City of
Kamloops sold its electric light
plant to the B.C. Electric, much to
the regret of many citizens, and as
power will be used to operate the
new pumps, the B.C. Plectrie will
undoubtedly find favor with the city
fathers.

Mayor Knows Better

Mayor Scanlan, who is a civil en-
gineer, must see the possibilities
of installing a pipeline to any one
of the lakes—which incidentally
would take less pumping and insure
a supply of pure water—and should
also see the possibilities of the city
Owning its own water, light and
power systems.

Such a scheme if embarked upon
would reduce the mill rate, rather
than inerease it, as is planned at

Boxing, Wrestling Bouts
Proving Popular

Saturday night's sport card held
in the Single Unemployed Protec-
tive Association Hall, at 61 West
Gordova -St., consisted of three
wrestling matches and four boxing
bouts, and they were all good. A
ballot was taken to determine the
most popular event.

In the opening wrestling bout,
Stan Elford of New Westminster
proved a little took good for Bill
Woyes of Burnaby, and pinned his
opponents’ shoulders to the mat in
two falls in as many rounds. This
bout won second place in the bal-
lotinge.

What was scheduled to be a five-
round bout with Jack Henderson,
Wew Westminster, ended in the
second round when Chuck Dunn
was forced to quit due to an old
injury.

Matthews, Hagan Draw

Jimmie Carson took WBattling
Storgan to the cleaners by gaining
the second fall in the third stanza
of their match. This ended the
wrestling.

Bill Chapman was on the receiy-
ing end of a pile of leather which
Frankie Wagner kept pushing into
his opponent’s face. Young Gordon
Chapman and Abie Dick enter-
tained the crowd with a good fight,
as also did Ronny Bellamy and
Jackie Dick.

Winding up the sports card for
the evening, Danny Matthews ended
all even with Jack Hogan. This bout
was the most popular event of the
evening.

Miss Murray’s dancing pupils
opened the entertainment with a
half hour exhibition of tap dancing,
reels and jigs.

Wext Saturday night’s program is
in preparation, and the sponsors
expect to have some new faces in
the ring.

EVICTION THREAT
FOLLOWS STRIKE

KAMLOOPS, April 13.— Despite
the promises of the government

agent here, that no undue hardship
would be placed on the married
men who took part in the recent
Strike, the following letter which
speaks for itself was sent to one of
the relief men:

“This is to inform you that as
your rent is not paid, although
promises were made on several
occasions, the owner will require
possession of his house and you
are officially notified to vacate
same.

“Kindly govern yourself accord-
inely and oblige.

rates of wages, would be an advan-
tage to the city, and would tend to
reduce the electric charges, thus al-
lowing more people to pay their bills
rather than cut off their light forc-
ing them to use the primitive kero-
sene lamps, which are dirty and
dangerous to human life and prop-
erty.

When the B.C. Hlectric took over
the lighting of the city, lights were
cut off from people on relief, and
the street lights were cut down
every night at 11:30 p.m.

Veteran Labor Leader
To Arrive May 22nd

TORONTO, April 14. — (ALP) —
George Lansbury, veteran TGritish
labor leader, is to speak at a huge
peace rally in Toronto on May 22, it
is announced by A. A. MacLeod,
national chairman of the Canadian
Leasue Against War and Fascism.

The date has been definitely set,
Mr. Macleod said, and the place
will likely be the Arena Gardens.

Co-operation of such organiza-
tions as the €.C.E., National Coun-
ell, the Trades and Labor Council,
and the League of Nations Society
and the Canadian Youth Council
will be sought.

“We hope to make the mass meet-
ing the ‘greatest peace rally that
Torento has eyer seen.’”’ the League
chairman asserted.

With Lansbury on his trip to this
continent, and likely a co-speaker
with him: in Toronto, will be Dr. Al-
bert Saltor, Labor M.P.

Lansbury will take part in the
launching of an anti-war drive in
the United States on April 22, when
he and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt,
wife of the United States President,
will speak at a meeting in Phila-
delphia and over an international
radio hook-up. He will speak at a
score of meetings in the United
States before comings to Canada.

UNITY SUPPORTED
During the campaign for sustain-—
ings funds for “Unity,” organ of the
Workers’ Unity Leasue. conducted
in March, the sum of $42 was raised
in Cumberland, while Nanaimo con-

tributed $30 to the same cause,

recent conversation with Stalin was
the most satisfactory of all the in-
terviews he has had since his talk

“Stalin was fine,’ Howard said.
“He struck me as a shrewd, calm,
elever man who knows exactly what

he wants. He answered my ques-
tions as [I might have answered
yours. There was no evading or

Asked to say how his conversa-
tion with Stalin compared with his
interview with Hitler, Howard said:

“A superficial difference between
these two men seems to be this:
Hitler is on his toes, eager, strung

up, anxious. Stalin is calm, settled,
msure of himself. This probably re-
stlects the fact that he has traveled
a long way on the road. The hard
work is behind. He has no doubts.
Hitler’s road is not yet fully char-
ted, perhaps. His big work may be
still in front. I would not care to
go any deeper than that.’’

Reactionaries Chal-
lenged to Seek
Election

REGINA, Sask., April 7—(ALP)
—Carrying out a court order from
Magistrate Tingley, city council to-
night adopted a motion of Alder-
man Cameron unseating Aldermen
MeManus and Mikkelson.

These two labor aldermen, elected
as labor members, were recently
convicted under a provincial statute
prohibitine from holding public of-
fice anyone in debt to a municipal-
ity. Both aldermen are unemployed
and it was held that relief consti-
tuted a debt to Regina.

By-elections will be held over
pending the decision of the courts
on the appeal entered by Mikkelson
and McManus against the convic-
tion. Decision is expected by next
Tuesday.

Labor forces in wards one and
three have already held re-orgzaniza-
tion meetings in preparation for an
emergency. Alderman McManus,
Speaking: tonight to electors in ward
three, issued a challenge to the
forces of reaction to dare run in
that ward. A series of meetings will
begin throughout the ward after
Easter.

Native Sons
Fare Poorly

Indians of Lillooet Seek
Centralized Unity

BOWSER, B.C., April 9.— Dire
poserty and abject misery daily
stalk the lives of the Indians in this
locality, particularly in respect to
those who have grown too old to
work.

One aged Indian, well past 70
years, was stricken with pneu-
monia, incurred as a result of hav-
ing to tramp three miles every other
day to the Post Office for his relief
Which was due on the first of last
month but did not arrive until the
fifteenth.

Cruelty to Aged

Poorly clad and under-nourished,
this native son was an easy to the
ravages of illness, and only the as-
sistance of kind neighbors prevent-
ed starvation and sickness claiming
another yictim.

Some idea of how the Indians are
treated can be gained from the case
of an Indian woman, 90 years of
age, who lives alone and receives
a mere pittance of $4.00 from the
Indian Dept. to keep her for one
whole month. How the Indian Dept.
handles these people can be seen
from these two cases.

Will Investigate Rights

LILLOOET, B.C, April 10—The
United Indians of the Lilloeet Dis-
trict will be represented at the In-
dians’ meeting in Kamloops, by a
delegate who has the backing of the
Indians here to appeal to the other
tribes for unity.

Centralization of the Indian move-
ment is sought as one of the first
objectives to be reached, while the
immediate task is to raise funds to
investigate what rights the Indians
have in this country.
