Not Waiting for King
Railroad Camps

WICTORIA, April 6—At least 600
workers who were inmates of re-
lief camps in B.C. up to the month
of March have smelled the poison
bait held out to them by the Fed-
eral Government in the form of
syork on the railroads at starvation
wages, and little better than relief
Tations in lousy boxcars, and took

to the road to seek work on their

The workers remember the rosy

promises made by Mackenzie Kine
during the election and after wait-
ing for more than 6 months for the
King Government to inaugurate
his promised program, they have
decided to “wait no longer.

Hon« Geo. Pearson, Minister of
Labor in the Provincial Government,
has made public a statement de-
ejlarine that “635 men left the
camps of B.C. during March.” Mr:
Pearson pretends to be surprised
that the men did not wait until Mr.
Kine gave them a chance to work
for the © P.R. and the government
railroad, instead of leaving the
eamps to seek work independently.
Me confesses he is “puzzled” by
the attitude of the camp boys. He
never lived all winter in a relief
<camp.

MISSION TAXES

MISSION, April 5—2Mission relief
recipients and ratepayers held a
meeting in the Cedar Hall yester-
day to discuss the relief question,
and decided to send a committee to
Snterview the Municipal Council.
“The delegation pressed their de-
mands which were the same as
those which had been adopted by
the €.C.F. before the council was
-elecied.

The council members agreed to
«do all they could to rectify some of
the present grievances. It is quite
true that the council has partly
met the demands for increased re-
lief. They passed a resolution at
this meeting favoring all relief be-
ane borne by the federal and pro-
~yincial governments.

who speaks at the Anditorium on
April 15, is one of the most color-
ful public characters in the United

touch with the Wancouver Welfare
Federation, the organization which
last year collected about $350,000 for
welfare purposes, but this organiza-
tion was unable to give any as
ance.

In the meantime the boys must
eat, so they have taken positions
on the various busy corners with
their collection cans, and while they
are thus ensuced, individuals of the
Citizens’ Leasue are going around
telling the boys they have no right
to collect, that they are just a
bunch of swine.

KAMLOOPS, B:G., March 20.—A
worker reported to MRelicf Officer

Munn that on Wednesday he would
be O.1 for work on relief, but on
Tuesday night he was called to worl
from 12 midnight till § a.m. Wed-
nesday. He therefore rested most
of Wednesday. He was again called
to work for Wednesday at midnight
till $ a.m. Thursday, thus bad to
rest on Thursday, for this work,
no pay is available for three weeks.

While this worker sleeping
the relief officer phoned the house.
He was informed that this man had
workins two Gizht-hour shifts
emersency work ,Saturday morning:
the worker reported to Relief Of-
ficer Munn that he would be O.K.
for work on the following Monday
morning, and also asked for his
weeltly relief allowance of $5.75 with
which to proyide the necessities for
his family of four, twa grown Ehil-
dren. Munn told him that “he had
nothing: for him or his family as he
Was cut off relief’ He pleaded with
the relief officer, explaining that
there Was no food in the house,
Munn said he could get no aid be-
cause he had failed to let him know
the reason he did not report on
Wednesday morning.

Passes the Buck

When the relief officer was in-
formed about the telephone mes-
Sage he passed the buck by putting
all the blame on the shoulders of
the chairman of the relief commit-
tee. This relief committee appointed
by Mayor Scanlan is comprised of
chairman, Ald. Williams, C.CF.
candidate a year ago; Aldermen
Johnstone and Campbell.

The worker who is a member of
the Kamloops Unemployed Organi-
Zation sot in touch with the griey-
ance conimittee which immediately
went to see Ald. Williams, only to
be told he was not responsible, but
that Relief Officer Munn was to
blame. He advised the grievance
committee to go back and see Re-
lief Officer Munn. It was then
pointed out to Williams that this
had already been done. Ald Wil-
liams then advised the committee
that, “it is the worker's funeral.”
Thus our iabor alderman passes
the buck.

Next, the srievance committee
went back to Relicf Officer Munn,
only to be advised they must have a
written order signed by Ald. Wil-
liams and one other of the city re-
lef committee

After more’ argument the com-
mittee made their way back io Ald.
Williams (a 30-minute walk to the
C.P.R. yards). He, at first, refused
to issue the required order, con-
tinuing to pass the buck, saying
he could not sign such an order be-
cause it would be breaking a city
ruling. He said that the city coun-
cil would not like him to sign such
an order He also stated that ne
might have to pay for it out of his

The grievance committee not be-
ing so easily disposed of insisted
that the worker must have some-
thing, so a two dollar order was
given. It was pointed out to Ald.
Williams by the committee that if
he could break the rule for two

The two dollar order being signed
Was now taken to Ald. Johnstone
who signed without any hesitation,
and after listening to the grievance
committee he had mo cause to
think he might have to pay any-
thing out of his pocket.

The grievance Gommittee knew
it would haye been useless to asl
Ald, Campbell, the other member
of the relief committee to sign the
order as he has proven himself to
be the best baby-starver on the
city council of I<amiloops. Ald.
Johnstone who signed, has proven
on numerous occasions to be in
favor of improving the lot of the
unemployed of Kamloops.

only 3:20 p.m. Mr. Mainn proved he
could lie in order to get out of try-

The relief committee at once got
busy on the phone trying to locate
him at his residence, without suc-
cess. He was finally located at his
favorite haunt, the beer parlor in

nadian Goyernment in 1930, was

tion League, Mr. Lee Markovich
and Dr, Whitlow of the S.C:L., both
stressed the fact that all power of
regulation did not Jay in the hands
of the commission, only the power
over the hatcheries and the waters
adjacent to the boundaries of the
Treaty.

Treaty Was Drawn Up in Secret

An Advisory Committee of ten
would be set up to advise the com-
mission and the Fishery Depart-
ments of each country. In this
way, instead of placing control of
the industry in the hands of a
few, it would give representation
of fishermen on the advisory com-
mittee, Mr. Markovich further
showed that when the 1930 Treaty
was drawn up, it was in secret, no
fishermen or fishermen’s orsaniza-
tion was represented. It was drawn
up by a few in order to get control
of the industry, and would create
a monopoly that would put the trap
in and cut out the independent
fishermen, the Fraser River fisher-
men especially.

“Waiting for Lefty’ dramatized by
the Progressive Arts Club proved as
big a drawing card in their fare-
well performance to a packed house
last night at the Hmpress Theatre
as it did on previous occasions,

“Lefty” was preceded by the Van-
couver Little Theatre’s production
of “Pierrot the Prodigal,’”’” a full
length pantomime play without
words, in which Guy Glover played
the leadine= role of Pierrot.

Pierrot, the only son of a French
peasant couple falls in love with a
beautiful girl who in return for her
love demands money. In order for
Pierret to meet the request, he pil-
fers the family treasury and goes
to his lady love, leaving the old
folks heart-broken.

The next scene shows Pierrot
esconced in a beautiful home as a
gentleman of means with a black
boy to wait on the two youn
lovers. Milady’s love for clothes and
jewelry drives Pierrot frantic as he
Seans the bills, and when the hero
is not quick enough to meet the in-
creasing demands, he is jilted for
another man of wealth.

Stunned by the turn of
Pierrot returns home in prodizal
Style where he is welcomed back
by his mother but shunned by his
father. As he is about to leave
home again the martial music of an
army band is heard, Pierrot decides
to go with them and takes leave of
his mother. His decision to join the
army brings him back into the food
graces of his father.

The play was well acted and the
music very good, but somehow it did
not ‘click’ with the audience to the
Same degree as ‘Lefty,’ every epi-
side of which was well applauded,
at times applause breaking out be-
fore the end of the scene.
