SUDBURY, Ont., Jan. 15. — “No
qoore money for Hitler,” was the
Slogan among the Frood miners
during this week-end in answer to
#he demand of International Nickel
0, (uco) shift bosses, who in-
structed all miners on pay day as
follows:

“Boys, don’t forget to bring 50
cents tomorrow for sending Alex
urd to the Olympic Games in Ger-
many. Remember, each one of

This ‘voluntary contribution’ was
very carefully prepared beforehand
by the bosses. Tt was announced
from Montreal that Alex Hurd, an

cided that Frood miners would be
the “private financial backing.”

There was a large number of min-
ers who understood its political sig-
nificance and refused to support the

MOTHER DROWNS BABE
TO SAVE IT SUFFERING
NEWBURGH, W.Y., Jan. 16.

Mrs. Dorothy Sherwood, 27-year-old
mother, told an Orange County jury
today why she drowned her two-
year-old son.
“TJ wanted to insure him against
suffering,’ she said, recalling her
own “‘miserable childhood in a suc-
cession of orphanages and boarding
houses in the middle west.”
On her husband’s death a year
ago, Mrs. Sherwood, penniless,
searched in vain for work. Threat-
ened with eviction from her home
she conceived the idea of drowning
her young son.

“KARLSRUBE” ON PACIFIC
AGAIN

SAN DIEGO, Calif—The notori-
ous Nazi warship the “Karlsruhe”
which a year ago provoked anti-
fascist demonstrations in the vari-
ous Pacific Coast points will ar-
rive in this city on April 7th for a
nine-day visit.

Bambure. Tt is reported from
Sweden that the Swedish seaman,
Perey Johannsson, failed to return
to his ship after shore leave at the
end of November last. His ship mates
fear that he has been kidnapped by
¢he German Secret Sate Police
(Gestapo) and that he 1s in some
German prison and tortured, Same

bert, of the Danish ship “Markur,”
was arrested in a German port on a

Borge Knigge was arrested in an
Italian port because of insulting re-
marks about Mussolini and sentenced
to a term of 244 years in prison.
Working together with the ILD.
his mates in Denmark succeeded in
interesting the public in this case,
which resulted in the organization
of a “Borge Kniggee Committee.”
The government in Denmark was
compelled to take the matter up.
Prior to his release the activity of
his mates and the committee made it
possible for him to receive some aid
while still in prison and public opin-
jon in Denmark ultimately forced
Mussolini te release him.

Boree Knigge was released because
there was mass.fight for his release.

SCHOOL COURSE

Months’ Training

The Wational Gommittee of the
Workers’ Sports Association of
Ganada are preparing for a Sports
Functionary School for the whole
of Canada. This school will deal
with the theory, organization and
practice of all forms of sports. It
will start on February 15, 1936, in
London, Ontario. Leadership for
the school will be provided jointly
by three of Canada’s best physical
culturists, and the Wational Board
of the W.S.A. The School will last
three months.

Red Star Athletic Club Gvhich is
affiliated to the W.S.A.) has de-
cided to send one student. The stu-
dent is Allan Puttonen, aged 20.
We is at present the physical cul-
ture instructor of the R.S.A-C.
When this student returns, a Dis-
trict Sports Functionary School
will be organized for B.C., to which
localities and organizations may
send students.

We hereby wish to appeal to all
organizations, unions, and individu-
als for funds. The student fee is
$100, and the return fare $87. This
must be raised by the 8th of Feb-

PLIES TO SLANDER CAM-
PAIGN IN BOSS PRESS

I see that “Observer” is busy
again in that yellow slander sheet
“The Nanaimo Free Press.” If we

muir) Ltd., when attacking any-
thing or anybody utilizes “OQbsery-
er,’ to do the job. And there is
quite a few occasions that “Ob-
server” has persecuted individuals
in Cumberland. And I would sug-
gest that “Observer” change his
lingo, because if he put a photo of
his ferret face in his letter of Dec.
27, it would not have been any
plainer than his letter, and so “Ob-
server’ “unmasks” the union. Well
“Ferret Face,’ the union never had
@ mask on Since it became a rank
and file union, therefore you have
been denied that privilese. You
know “Observer’’ in the old days
when the coal company wanted to
break up the union in
land, W.E. of Miners, in 1903, they
got suckers like you to howl about
I.W.W’.'s,

In 1913, it was the- Socialists.
1935, it is the Reds.

Having belonged to the union in

1903 (V.F. of Miners) the U.M.W.
of A. in 1913 and the M.W.U. of
GC. in 1935, I have discovered that
it makes no difference what union
it is, the company don’t want it and
gets suckers like you to do their
dirty work for them. Some of these
individuals around here who have
the happy faculty of finding 12
food reasons for condemning this
union did the same in 1913 and
Some of them in 1903.
Some of them were scabs in 1903,
some in 1918, in fact some of them
landed here in 1913 and to expect
them to be union men in 1935 is
impossible. With the unsavory
name some of these people have
or at least had, I would think they
could not wish to add any more to
it.

In

Let us hope they don’t, but when
every union that has ever been in
this camp is condemned by about
the same gang, it must be the said
gang that is wrong. Maybe they
will find a union to their liking
when Bickle (publisher of the “Is-
lander.’—Ead.) and his suckers get
the home local going, And I will
bet even money that this rotten
gane will fight in that, unless Col.
Williers rides them with a very firm
hand.

Miners Pay With Their Lives for

Bosses’ Greed for Profits

“Imaginary grievances are cre-
ated for them, and legitimate griev—
ances are distorted and magnified
beyond all proportion,’ so says Mr.
Observer. Well let us see some of
these imaginary grievances.
About 1916, there were about five
men killed in a gas explosion in No.
6 Mine,-due to carelessness on the
part of the company. Ask the wid-
ows and orphans if this was an
imaginary grievance. No, “Observ-
er,” when your husband or father
or son is killed in a mine explosion
it is anything but imaginary. And
mark you this “Qbserver,’’ there
Was no union in Cumberland at
that time.

Alone around 1921 or 1922 there
were 16 or 17 men killed in No, 4
Mine. Why? Beeause an insane
management were trying to get out
cheap coal with electric machinery,
in a place that was loaded with gas:
If there had been a strong union
here at that time that accident
might have been prevented. All we

had then to represent uS Was a
thing called a ‘‘Grievance Commit-
tee’ who smoked the company’s

good cigars, and drank their rotten
whisky. The men knew this condi-
tion existed .but what could we do.
And listen Mr. Observer, the death
of those men was not imaginary,
the widows and orphans will testify
to that.

Following a few months after
this explosion, we had another in
No. 4 Mine, and I assure you it

was not imaginary. I was too close
{to it to call it imaginary. Over 30)
men were killed, leaving the usual
trail of widows and orphans—hard-
ly imuginary, I would say. Some of
the fire bosses that were killed in
that explosion expressed some days
fefore that the section was not
safe, but they had no place to go
with their grievance. And the rea-
son they had no place to report this
condition was because you Mr. Ob-
server, you and your kind, the
Bickles and the suckers, had driven
the unions away from this camp in
1903 and in 1913. And you want to
do the same thine again. And what
caused this last explosion. Dirty
sreed to get out coal as cheap as
possible, without regard for human
values.

Government Fake Investigation
Then came the investigation and

the powers that be discovered a
burned match and blamed it on a
poor old Chinaman, who never
smoked in his life, so those who
knew him said. Nothing was said
about an electric air compressor

that nad been on fire several times
just previous to this explosion. Oh
no, that electric driven air compres-
sor could not have possibly caused
that calamity. And Mr. Observer,
what did Mr. Bickles’ press, your
press, say about these activities?
You lied to the company’s taste and
the truth was never published. If
you ever told the truth about these
things you would be fired, and you
know it.

And here are some more things

company suckers, are endeavoring
to break our union, and put in 2

Cumberland, had a conference with

then, or will the men whom you
have worked with be the ones you
will fall back on?

Yes, it’s time for a change. Time
you Mr. Observer, started (telling
the truth, and time yow quit fool-
ing yourself. It is time you and
your kind realize that you are not
dealine with a bunch of smbservient
tools. There are a lot of things yow
have to learn about the workine

ed the following letter from the chief
scout, It is worthy of being read as
it shows up the complete ignorance
(rather an attempt to cover up) by
the chief scout of what the R-C.M.P.
are engaged in and the type of men
in the police ranks. It is too bad
Baden Powell did not witness the
part played by the Mounties in the
attack on the relief trekkers on July
ist, at Regina.

their demands for a new basic WPA
scale of sixty-seven and a half cents

unionization on WPA jobs, 300 dele-
gates to the Minnesota Labor As-
sociation: convention set that date as
a deadline for calling a statewide
WPA strike. All Minnesota labor
groups will+be invited to send dele-
gates. The convention condemned
use of the National Guard in con-
nection with strikes at Cloquet and
Minneapolis.

industry looms larger each week,
With the movie studios offering little
active opposition, apparently afraid
of the streneth of 20,000 workers al-
ready organized into umions With
almost every technical worker in the

settlemrent of remaining jurisdic-
tional disputes in the near future
is expected to open the way for the

SAN FRANCISCO.—|_(FP)—A spe-
cial meeting of the Sam Francisco
Labor Council, with five delegates
from each union, will be held on
Jan. 26 to hear Tom Mooney’s at-
tormeys, Frank P. Walsh. John H.
Finerty, and George T. Davis; tell
about the progress of the habeas
corpus hearings, and to raise funds
to carry the case farther. The hear-
ings are scheduled to be resumed
Jam. 20.

SEATTLE. —(@P)—Anti-union war
chest funds to the tune of $200,000
are beings; demanded of Seattle busi-
nessmen by President Frank Jeffrey,
of the Seattle Pood Council, open
Shop chain store group affiliated
with the city’s Industrial Council.
Present activities of the group, hey

Washington State Labor News, in-

NEW ORLEANS.—GP)—A Mari-

conference in Houston, Tex. More
unions will join the group, it is ex-
pected, after a confab in New Or-
leans in the near future.

NEW YORK—(C€£P)—How long
will religious people condone the
rising tide of American anti-labor
violence? asks the Methodist Federa-
tion for Social Service in its January
bulletin. The church sroup’s report
lists 73 workers and farmers killed
in industrial strife in 1935—and no
employer.

DETROIT. —{FP)—Flivvers and

WORKER STUDENTS
ARRANGE CONCERT

After spending six weeks at the
Workers’ Training School in Van-
couver, the students have arranged
a concert and dance to be staged
next Wednesday night.
A short play, “Back to the Land,”
by Trevor Maguire, will be pre-
sented. Malcolm Bruce will give a
short address, and many other in-
teresting items are on the program.
In addition, $5 worth of merchan-
dise will be presented to the holder
of the admission ticket bearing the
lucky number.
This affair will take place in the
Ukrainian Labor Temple, 805 Pen-
der Street East, on January 29th,
and tickets, now on sale, are priced
at fifteen cents.

Children Had a Good Time
Highty children, mostly.sonus and
daughters of exservicemen, ~were
given a dinner at the Workers’
Hall, 4265 Main Street, in the first
week of the New Year. Hot dinner
was served, followed by ice cream:
and games, every child present re—
ceiving a gift before leaving.

The Women’s Auxiliary, Centre
Branch, W-E.S.L., took an active
part in helping to make this a real
Success. Others participating were,
the Red. Star Children’s Group,
Worth Fraser Children’s Group, and
others.

We wish right here to campli-
ment the: ladies on their good work
and trust they will continue to
take an active interest in children’s
work so that our under-privilered’
kids get a better chance in life..

magazine “Adventure,’ we find
how pro-fascist propaganda is
spread.

In the current February issue is
a story called, “White Man in Ethi-
opia.”” Under this is the caption: “L
see you soldiers; this prisoner is
mine; there will be no torture.”
This is a vile, imsidious sugges-
tion that the Ethiopians maltreat
their prisoners.

Again we read. “His command
was made up of released SLAVES

[given their liberty to fight against

Italy.’- This is but to further the
elaims of the Fascist Mussolini that
Ethiopia is nothing but a slave na-
tion.

The reactionary elements are by
no means dumb. They recognize
that many workers read light fic-
tion and se take advantage of it to
spread their poison. :

Last week we gave the story of a
veteran refused relief although 2
property holder and voter in this
city. The reason given for refusal
was, “Not lone enough residence.”
We are pleased to state that
through the efforts of the Centre
Branch of the ExServicemen’s
League, our comrade has been
placed on City relief. :
Veterans must insist on the right
to reside where they choose.

Farmer Galis For Unity
The following letter has been re-
ceived from an old soldier:

January 20, 1936.
Editor, B.C. Workers’ News:
Dear Sir—In view of the fact
the B.C. Provincial elections are
drawing nearer all the time, the
suggestion of yours to weld Unity
among the C.C.F ers, Communists,
Farmers and other workers’ or-
ganizations seems to be a good one.
May your efforts be crowned with
every success. Keep up the good
work. In my day I have been 2
member of the Vancouver Street
Railwaymen’s Union, and the Ca-
nadian Express Employees’ Union
at Edmonton. I have also attended
the Civil Servants’ Association, but
could not join, being only a tem-
porary employee. I served in the
British and Canadian forces with
credit, and haye been a farmer in
Alberta and now I'am farming in
B.C. Best wishes and good luck!
