Wairuna sailed without cargo on

Gut Off Italian Supplies.

Tt is still possible to force the
League of Nations to act. Sanctions
against fascist italy, energetically
applied, can still stop Mussolini’s im-=
perialist adventure. The Canadian
Sovernment must be forced to de-
mand, and the Canadian representa-
tive in the League of Nations must
insist, that all supplies of materials,
whether directly war materials or
otherwise. to Italy be immediately
stopped. That Italy be cut off from
all economic and commercial inter-
course, and all communication with
the rest of the world until the fascist
hordes are withdrawn from Africa.
That full and unlimited assistance,
financial and economic, be given to
Ethiopia in her war of national de-
fence.

Determined Resistance of Common
People.

If the organized Strensth of the
profit and war-mongers of Canada
prevents us from forcing the CGans-
dian government to take such action,
we shall be faced with the imminent

WINNIPISG, Oct. 5.—Fearing or-

Packers Iocal, W.UW.L., Canada Pac-
kers haye retracted a former decj-

employees of their Winnipeg plant.
The retraction followed the issuing
of a call by the militant local to all
employees of the plant to insist upon
no lessening of wages. Orfeanization-
al gains are reported by the union as
a result of the speedy action.

VANCOUVER, Oct. 9—D. Aneus,
seaman of Vancouver, on strike. was
arrested today charged with malic-
ious damage to a scab’s car.

He is remanded for trial and the
C.1..D.L. immediately took charge of
the defense of this worker and his
bail bonds were posted two hours
after he was arrested.

Women And The Election

By WORKING WOMAN

Women in Canada who are over
21 years of age have a vote in the
Pederal Election if they comply with
the Dominion Franchise Act. The
Capitalist Parties evidently do not
fear Women removinge them from
power yet or else they would be dis-
franchised, as the campboys have
been. We all Know the Gapital-
ist Party politicians brazenly at-
tempt to bamboozle women at elec-
tion time.

Who hasn’t been to an election
meeting and heard the Liberal or
Tory candidates tell the ladies how
“good looking” they are, and how
“intelligent” they are in this consti-
tuency. They all declare that they
have the interests of mothers and
children at heart, and how Mr. Ben_
nett or Mr. King is planning to
bring down legislation that will
make a woman's life a Paradise in
Canada.

In this election we have another
capitalist politician, Stevens, who is
endeavoring to win the women for
the continuation of the capitalist
policies and prevent them from go-
ing over to the C.C.F.

CHARGES MADE BY DR. TELFORD

Call Upon C.C.F. Mem-
bers to Demand That
Telford Publicly
Retract

At the Moose Hall last Mondaly
night Dr. Lyle Telford, prominent
and responsible member of the C.C.
I., made deliberate lying and slan-
derous statements against the Ac-
tion Committee of the Ex-service-
men.

In order to confuse honest people
he charged the Workers’ Ex-service-
men’s League with being a Com-
munist organization and in the same
breath exclaimed the Liberals were
co-operating with and financing the
Communists. The W.E.S.L. and the
Communist Party can deal with
these charges. We in this letter want
to state briefly the case for the Ac-
tion Committee only. 3

The Action Committee of Ex-
Servicemen made the arrangement
for the Vancouver Hotel meeting
held on Thursday, Oetober 10,
8 p.m.

The W.E.S.L. is only a part of the
Action Committee, this committee
beings composed of sixteen delegates,
which include one from an Army
and Navy branch, one from Branch
36 of the Canadian Legion, many
small pension delegates and six
delezates from the W.E.S.L.

Dr. Telford further states that
“this meeting at the Wancouver
Hotel has been financed by the Lib-
eral Party.”” We want to brand this
as a deliberate and downright lie.
Facts Disprove Telford Statement.

What are the facts? The facts
are, that the rent of $150 was loan-
ed to the Committee by a man who
is not a Liberal candidate and, in
fact, is not even a Liberal supporter,
with the understanding that this
loan Was to be repaid from the col-
jection taken at the meeting.

We invited all parties to send
Speakers to this meenite to put for-
ward what they will do for the ex-

servicemen and their widows and
dependents if elected.
Candidates, including Gonserva-

tive, Liberal, Reconstruction, Social
Credit and Communist have paid to
our committee $25 for 15 minutes’
time over the air. The GCE eyi-
dently has refused to participate in
this meeting.

Along with this money we have
received about $50 om Collection lists
from small business people and sym-
pathetic individuals. We have defi-

nitely never received one penny or
cheque from any other souree and
we defy Dr. Telford or anyone else

to prove the opposite.
Contemptible Lies and Slander
Dr. Telford’s statement to the ef-
fect that our Action Committee re-
eeived a cheque from Gordon Wis-

mer, Liberal agent, is a malicious
Slander and a contemptible false-
hood. We challenge Telford to

prove, as he declared he could do;
that the Action Committee received
any cheque or money or any other
form of financial aid from Wismer.

We are convinced that these tac-
tics of Dr. Telford, which deliberate-
ly lies and slanders veterans who are
working honestly and energetically
for the well being of their kind, is
not a credit to the C.@1®. and puts
this party on the same dishonest
plane as the old line parties unless
corrected.

We, therefore, appeal to all hon-
est €.C. I. members and supporters
to make themselves acquainted with
the facts and when this done they
will then decide that, as a matter of
truth and honesty, Dr. Telford
should be asked to repudiate his
charges publicly.

PRESS DEMANDS

WINNIPEG, Oct. 5.—Representa-
tives of the Bakers and Drivers Lo-
cal, Wood Workers’ Industrial Union,
Will appear during the next week, be-
fore the commission investigating
the local bakery trade. The enquiry
commission, now in session for three
weelss under the chairmanship of R.
B. Russell, O.3-U., was ordered after
a bitter price-euttine war among the
master bakers. :

Proceeding, to date, indicate grave
danger of bread price being fixed or
tabilized at the expense of the em-
ployees in the trade. This, the bak-
ers’ local will meet by pressing for
a uniform scale of union wages
throughout the trade, initiation of
the 44-hour week, closed shops and
other union conditions.

AGENTS’ ACTIONS

NANAIMO, Oct. 3.—The Nanaimo
C.C.F. election committee has repud-
lated unity with the Communist Elec-
tion Committee, in an ad. in the lo-

cal press which was sisned by Mary
Ii. James, official agent of J. S.
Taylor, C.C.l. candidate, Nanaimo
constituency.

That Mrs. James’ high-handed ac-
tion is resented by many C.C P.ers
has been amply proven since, as
there has been much dissatisfaction
expressed, not only with her abrupt
way of turning down the offer of
unity by the Communists, but with
her bureaueratic behavior as a
whole.

On Sept. 26th, Jack Taylor spoke
at ao meeting which was held under
the auspices of the Communist elec-
tion campaign committee of Nanai-
mo constituency. About a hundred
and fifty were present and listened
attentively to Comrade Taylon’s
strong appeal for a United Front
inst the offensive of Canadian
apitalism.

ANOTHER PROMISE

itely promised to open up full diplo-
matic and trade relations with Soviet

that the Liberals definitely
promised to trade with any country
that will trade with us.

CITY REFUSES -
POLICE BILL

VANCOUVER, Oct. 9.—Under the
leadership of Aldermen Wilson and
McDonald, a revolt was raised in
the City Couneil against a proposed
new appropriation of $6000 for spe-
cial police in the month of October,
and the progressive elements suc-
ceeded in getting the matter referred
back to the police commission to be
taken up with-the governments at
Victoria and Ottawa.

Police Chief Foster advised the
city council that ‘“‘conditions are not
Such as would warrant any reduction
in the waterfront protection.” Al
dermen Wilson andMcDonald Stated,
however, that the city had no busi-
ness Sivinge protection to the Ship-
ping Federation.

Tisdall Uses Big Stick.

Acting Mayor Tisdall, notorious
spokesman for big business, attempt-
ed to push through the appropria-
tion on the grounds that “it is use-
less to fight against it.’

The progressives won out in favor
of the taxpayers by five to three, to
send the bill back to the WPolice
Commission.

Mr. Woodsworth, Mr. Heaps and
Dr. Telford, national and provincial
leaders of the C.C.F. respectively,
have refused to endorse our unity
call. They would rather have unity
with the Conservatives than with
Communists and their supporters.
Dr. Telford has slandered the Gom-

Stated, “If you cannot see your way
clear to vote C.C.F., then vote for

the Conservatives.”

We Communists, on the other
hand, call upon the people not to
vote for the capitalist parties, but
to vote Communist or Labor or
CCE. We call for this no matter
how much we may differ with some
of the C.G.F; leaders because we are
convinced that thousands of C.C¥,
followers are desirous of unity and
are anti-capitalist. We desire to as-
sist them in their abandonment of
Capitalist ideology and their need
for unity and we want to win them
for the struggle against poverty,
fascism and war.

Malcolm Bruce Alone Stands

For Unity

In Vancouver East, we call upon
the electorate to vote for Malcolm
Bruce, the Communist candidate,
because he alone js fighting to
unite the people for their immediate
needs. Angus McInnis, the C.CE
Candidate in Vancouver Bast, like
Woodsworth and Telford, and some
other leaders of the C.C.FE., is bit-
terly fighting against a united front
in the election.

A vote for Bruce is a vote for
unity in the struggle acainst cap-
italism. Angus McInnis is respon-
Sible for splitting labor’s vote in
Vancouver Hast, Answer this
splitting policy by voting Bruce to
Parliament,

MacKinnon in €omox-Alberni

In Comox-Alberni the Communist
Party is calling for the election of
Mack MacKinnon, the labor candi-
date.

His election program is a pre
gram that will benefit the loggers,
fishermen, miners, farmers and the
rest of the common people. The
C.C-. candidate in that riding, Mr.
Cameron, has not even the unity of
the C.C.F. Clubs behind him. Mac-
FGinnon on the other hand has the
backing of the powerful Loggers’
Union and many of the C.C#E.
members and followers, and besides
that, he has a Splendid record in
the labor movement.

Outside of these two constituen-
cies in B.G. the Communist Party.

the €.@F. candidates and defeat
the capitalist parties.

Maintain Unity After
the Blection

Momentous tasks confront the
people of Canada teday. The Gom-
munist Party in appealing to the
electorate to unity at the polis to
defeat the capitalist parties and
to elect Communist and C.C.F. can-
didates is not unmindful of the
need for unity after the election.

of traps by “Tod & Son’’ who are
exempted from the restriction of the
Natural Products Marketing Act,—
which latter is Supposed to prevent
the eluttine of the market.
- Wishermen and their organizations
have demanded the abolition of these
traps as being a destructive menace
to the fishing industry, but the Zov-
ernment uses the flimsy excuse that
the Department of Fisheries desires
to ensure a catch equal to the Gana_—
dian Wisheries and that the fish
would otherwise be caught in the
U.S:A. traps. As a matter of fact.
the American fishermen, by carrying
on an energetic strugele have suc-
ceeded in gsettine their traps abol-
ished.

Need Fighting MP. for Relief

The results are that misery and
destitution face thousands of Indian
and white fishermen in Canada dur-
ing the winter months, and further
more, the goyernment evades its re-
sponsibility of givine relief to desti-
tute fishermen in the Jess Orsanized
districts.
