Vancouver, B.C., October 4, 1935 © CAPITALIST PARTY PROMISES As the Federal Election campaign draws to a close the Liberal, Conservative and Re- construction candidates become more dema- gogic, more unprincipled and reckless in their promises. The Liberals, not so cocksure as they were a few weeks ago, are belatedly promising the abolition of the Slave Camps. Posing as the party which can yestore prosperity, they hope the people will forget that it was under the King Liberal administration that the present depression struck Canada. If they eouldn’t hold what they call prosperity in 1929-30, how can they be expected to bring it back? : They are enticing voters with promises to revive trade by regaining markets which are lost forever to declining capitalism. They are posing, as Stevens is posing, as the cham- pions of the Common People against the fi- nancial oligarchy, expecting the people to forget the $750,000 they received from Beau- harnois. They expect the people to forget their record of paying full interest charges on the national debt to the bankers and other rich bondholders, of their wage-cutting while maintaining and increasing profits, of their use of troops against the workers in indus- trial disputes, and of their refusal to give a five cent piece from the Federal treasury to relieve the misery of the unemployed. As for the Bennett party, with its call to “sive Bennett a chance to finish his work,” the people wish to know why they should give him a chance to finish the internment of the youth of Canada in militarized, forced- labor camps, or the establishment of the dic- tatorship which he started to establish, or to finish the impoverishment of the common people which he has already in great meas- ure achieved. Tt is not a chance to finish to work that Bennett should be given; he should be de- feated in order that he may be prevented from finishing his nefarious work. And the same applies to King and the hypocritical Tory Stevens. The situation in Canada today is too men- acing to permit those old capitalist lackeys or their parties to again rule Canada. And if ¢hat cannot be prevented, then what is needed is a strong opposition composed of C.C.F. and Communist candidates that will fight in parliament, with the support of a united common people’s front throughout the country, against the anti-labor legislation ‘and administration of whatever capitalist government party is in power, whether Lib- eral, Tory, Reconstruction or a coalition Na- tional government which would comprise the blackest reactionaries of all three capitalist parties. ak MALICIOUS SLANDERER After a considerable amount of sly insinua- tion, Dr. Telford, C.C.F. leader, has definitely charged the Communists with having re- eeived money from the Liberals for use in the present Federal election campaign. Formerly the reactionary section of the C.C.F. leadership charged the Communists with being in league with the Conservatives. This latter was the line of the C.C.F. organ, the Commonyealth. 5 When Doctor Telford stated that the Com- munists had received money from the Lib- erals or from any other bourgeois source, he deliberately and maliciously lied. There is not even the excuse that circumstances could make such a suggestion possible. When pressed by the Communists and cer- ‘of his anti-labor legislation, and when the THE WATERFRONT “PROBE” The “probe” being conducted by Judge Davis, appointed by the Bennett government, into the lockout of the waterfront workers, is turning more and more into an attempt to work up public prejudice against the militant unions of the locked-out men. The causes of the dispute are being covered up With a mess of irrelevant matter introduced by the highly-paid lawyers of the shipping inter- ests. The Shipping Federation brought one of their own kind over from San Francisco, one I. Foisie, to give evidence. Foisie is a ship- ping magnate himself whose job, according +o his own statement, is a “co-ordinator, ” which means an expert at Red-baiting, cor- rupting union officials and smashing strikes. Foisie knows nothing about the causes which led to the present dispute in B. C. ports, and could add nothing of value to the enquiry, and was not brought over to add anything to it, but to slander Harry Bridges, militant leader of the San Francisca long- shoremen, and Left (Wing elements in organ- ized labor. Foisie is a typical Hearstian and American Legion Red-baiter and labor hater, and should not be permitted to give evidence in a dispute he knows nothing about. Not only is this creature allowed to spill his irrelevant slander, but now that the case for the locked-out workers has been pre- sented by their representatives, and the Shipping Federation representatives are pre- senting their case, the lawyers are permitted to browbeat witnesses, ignore the real causes of the dispute and distract attention from them with the fascist ravings of imported union smashers of the Foisie stripe. Tt is clear that the purpose in instituting the “probe” was to discredit militant union- ism in the eyes of the public in order to justify the lockout and the attempt to smash unionism in the ports of British Columbia. The representatives of the waterfront workers should expose the plans of the Ship- ping interests in the investigation itself as well as outside of it, and if the lawyers are permitted to continue their campaign of slan- der and misrepresentation, they should henceforth disassociate themselves from and repudiate an “enquiry which has become an open attack upon trades unionism and its loyal leaders. tain sections of their own party to form a united front of struggle against capitalism, the reactionaries of the Telford type gave as a reason for refusal the assertion that the Communists ‘‘abused” and “~ilified’ them. Communists do neither. They criticize their anti-labor actions, such as, for instance, their united front with Bennett and their support C.C.F. leader, Heaps of Winnipeg, receives the open endorsement of the Conservative- Fascist leader, ex-may0or Ralph Webb, and the withdrawal-of the Conservative candidate in Heaps’ favor, Communist criticism of Heaps is vindicated. But they neyer resort to downright falsehood and slander as Tel- ford does. Communists would not for a mo- ment charge, or even suggest, that the C.C.F. was receiving money from either of the old capitalist parties. Seared stiff of McGeer and dodging a fight, Telford directs his attacks against that section of the oppressed class which has borne, and still bears, the brunt of the at- tacks of the capitalists, the Communists. And in his cowardly attack along with the anti-working class pack, he resorts to the meanest, the most cowardly and the most shameless method of slander and falsehood in a manner that would bring the blush of shame even to a Sergeant Leopold. Tt is high time that the honest members of the C.C.F. took the slanderous, petty bourgeois doctor in hand and closed his lying mouth. Hither that or kick him out of their party which he disgraces, and send him into the Fascist gangs along with Tom MacInnis and Gerry McGeer where he properly be- longs. The full text was published in “Lhe Work- er” of Sept. 26. In the midst of the present fed- eral election campaign in Canada, the world has come directly to the brink of a new world war. The big imperialist powers have plundered and ruobed the masses at home in an effort to find a way out of the erisis: and now some of them are turning to war abroad in an effort to find a way out at the expense of weaker nations. The world is like a jungle. At any moment the imperialist wolves may hurl the masses of the people of the world into a new Slaughter. Main War Danger The main danger of war arises from the plan of reactionary imperi- alist groups in all jmiperialist coun- tries for war against the Soviet {inion. The antagonisms of the im- perialist powers against the Soviet Union underlie the whole world poli- tical situation. The Soviet Union is the only consistent fighter for peace because the socialist fatherland of the workers of all countries has Do foreign interests to defend by wat. “Peace’ ‘Lallk In Canada The representatives of the ruling poureeoisie of Canada talk today as if they stood for peace, particularly pDecause a nelection campaign is 20- ing on. This shows that they are afraid of the peace sentiments and desires of the Canadian masses, but at the same time only make their war plans and wair aims more dan- eerous. Tt was the Bennett government that openly provoked war against the Soviet Union at every interna- tional gathering that presented the occasion for such provocation. And at home the Bennett government has re-equipped the militia and is trying to militarize the Canadian youth. Bennett’s Alliance The sovernment of Bennett main- tains a war alliance with British im- perialism. his war alliance was ar- ranged with Sir Maurice Hankey, and was finally concluded at the last Imperial Conference 12 London. This is an alliance whereby the Canadian people will be hurled into war to defend the joint profits of the Canadian and British bourgeoisie. Tt is an alliance whereby the Cana- dian people will be automatically in- volved in the inevitable war en- tanglements of British imperialism. Other “Peace” Talk Kine talks of peace and says that a King Liberal government would not enter war without the consent of parliament. But everyone knows that such a parliament of King sup- porters would be a capitalist parlia- ment and war parliament. Tt was King who started the war provocations against the Soviet Union in 1927. The King govern- ment committed a war act by break- ings diplomatic and trade relations with the Soviet Union. The Liberal Party has declared correctly that it stands for the foreign policy pursued up to now by the Bennett gFovern- ment, and would continue that for- eign policy. The Elections and War All the progressive and peace-lov-— ing people of Ganada who wish to save Canada from being hurled into war must rally in unity in this elec- tion to elect a majority of ¢.c.F. and Communist candidates pledged to the fight for peace. Only the united power of the masses can prevent us from being hurled into war. That united pow- er can make use of a G.CE. sov- ernment, and such a sovernment ean be decisive at the present time in the struggle for peace. if a CC. iF. government conducted a fight against the war-mongers and for peace, then the Gommunists would support them. Mr. Woodsworth does mot hold out the perspective of struggle against the warmongers, but offers to resign in the face of an offen- sive by the capitalist forces in fav- or of war. Such a stand is, of couse not in the interests of the Canadian people. Such a stand does not repre- sent the sentiment and desire of C.C.F. followers. Such a stand i not in line with the sentiments most C.C.F. leaders who wish wage a real fight against war- Only C.C.F. candidates pledged to united struggle for peace and Com- munist candidates who are the de- Gisive fighters for peace must be supported by the peace-loving peo- ple of Ganada in the present elec- tion. The candidates of the war par- ties, the Liberals, Tories and Stev- ens’ Parties, must be defeated. Arms For Bthiopia. The Ethiopian people are menac- ed by an attack of Italian imperial- ism. Mussolini, despairing of finding a way out by driving the Italian people deeper into poverty alone, now turns to the conquest of a small weak nation of the Negro people in Africa.
