ITALIAN MINERS OPPOSE WAR.

SICILY, Italy.—Ten thousand sul-
phur miners struck in protest
against Mussolini's war plans on
Abyssinia. The conscript class of
1911 were called up and fathers and
mothers of the conscripts beseiged
the railroad station to prevent their
children from leaving for training for
war. Hell was let loose against
them by the authorities. [It was then
the miners struck. Similar out-
breaks are a daily occurence. De-
tails are ruthlessly suppressed.

C.L.D.L Calls
For Unity

Appeals for Mass Resist-
ance to Growing
Terror

The local branch of the €.L.D.u.
is taking definite steps to form a
united defense front locally with
other organizations and is  sub-
mitting the following proposals to a
eonfreence to be called in September:

1. Work for the repeal of Sec-
tion 98 and for the release of all
those imprisoned under it.

2. Conduct protests against the
formation of Fascist League, no
matter under what name they ap-—
pear.

3. Bring a stop to police terror
against the people of Canada be-
cause they strive to secure their
rights.

Proposals for the ‘nature of ac-
tivities’ to be carried on, is as fol-
lows:

(a) Jomt protest meetings op-
posing and exposing terror against
the workers.

(b) Resolutions of protest to the
authorities (collectively and indi-
vidually).

(ec) Fo have representatives of
the participating organizations,
M.PJ’s and others carry protests
to the floor of the House. (Muni-
cipal, Provincial and Federal).

Stem the Growth of Fascist
Perror

The accompanying letter circulated
with the above says, in part: “Simul-
taneously. the working people of
Canada are witnessing an outrageous
inerease in police terror (Vancouver,
Corbin, Montreal, Regina, ete.) Not
content with this,
elements and enemies of the people
are today secretly and openly organ-
izing Fascist terror bands to intimi-
date and suppress the people of
Ganada.

“This growing threat can only be
stemmed by the UNITED efforts of
the people of Canada, irrespective
of political views, creeds, nationality,
or any other differences.

“Trade unions, unemployed asso-
eiations, political parties, C. C. F.
elubs, churches: and church organi-
gations, humanitarian and fraternal
organizations, etc., are being invited
to send delesates to the conference
which will be conducted on a sirictly
democratic basis.””

The circular further states: “We
feel confident that the response and
outeome of the conference will be 2
step in the right direction; a step
towards unity of labor, which can
cheek the growth of Fascism and
State terror.”

It is also intended that a commit-
tee will be elected from the confer-
ence to carry on and co-ordinate
the work.

SLIMY FRAME-UP

NEW WESTMINSTER, July 19.—
Fred Giles, longshoreman, who was
arrested on July 16, was today sen-
tenced to one month in Qakalla jail
on a framed-up charge of “vagrancy
for incommoding=e peaceful passen-
gers,”’

He is alleged to have spoken to a
bus load of farmers from the Wraser
Valley, informing them of the strike
on the waterfront and urging them
mot to act as strikebreakers.

ANOTHER CASE WON
“VANCOUVER, July 17.—John B.
Harrison, seaman, was arrested on
the picket line and charged with
‘“Vae. HW’ Fis case came up on July
18 and was dismissed.

SELF DEFENSE WINS
QUEENSBORO, B.C., July 19.—
George Tollis, C..D.L. organizer,
was arrested by Peter Bruce, Chief
of Police in New Westminster, and
charged with vagrancy.

This worker has been active in
the strike of young workers in a box
factory. His case came up on July
99 .

Follis defended himself in court
and pointed out that he and his
family had lived all their lives in

Wew Westminster and were well
known as honest working people.
The case was dismissed.
POLICE BRUTALITY
PRINCETON, B.C, July 22.—

Sixty-four relief camp workers were
today forcibly ejected from Hope-
Princeton slave camp by Inspector
Macdonald of Corbin illfame. Two
leading workers, Sam Kurin and E.
Allem, were arrested and were
rushed to Princeton. Kurin, who is
Jewish, was told by Inspector Mac-
donald, “You should be in Germany.”
Kurin replied, “Never mind Ger-
many, this country is bad enough.”

previously sent ten active Princeton
workers to jail on’ framed charges.

WOLFE RELEASED

VANCOUVER, July 23.—James
Wolfe, seamen’s organizer, who was
arrested July i6 on charges of “in-
timidation”’ and “assaulting a police
constable,” owas today acquitted
when the crown failed to produce
any witnesses. Wolfe was out on
$1000 bail supplied by the C.L.D.L.

PIONEER WINS PRIZE

VANCOUVER, July 23.—The win-
ner of the raffle for the $15 chester-
field cushion, with proceeds to the
sustaining fund of the Labor De-
fender, is Lily Erickson of 3411 Wel-
linston Avenue, Vancouver, B.C.
This young comrade is an active
worker among the Pioneers and is
the daughter of the secretary of the
Norquay Branch, C..D-L.

JOINT DEFENSE AFFAIR

Due to the heavy expenses in-
volved in providing legal expenses
and bail fees and because of the
needed expenses with which to fight
the cases coming up for jury trial
at the Fall Assizes on September 16,
the District Executive Committee in
conjunction with the Lonsshoremen
and Water Transport Workers Asso-
ciation, is staging a concert and
dance at the Orange Hall on Labor
Day, September 2.

We appeal to all organizations to
keep this date open and further ask
to assist us in making this affair 2

SUPPORT STRIKE

American Crews Prevent
Scabs Unloading
Cargos

VICTORIA, BiG. July 22:— the
longshoremen here who have been
locked out by the local shipping
bosses for refusing to unload unfair
Carsos, are receiving the strone sup-
port of the crews of American Ships
calling into Victoria.

On the 16th of July the crew of
the “H.F. Alexander’? refused to let
seabs unload the ship.

Three days later the “Ruth Alex-
ander” called here with 190 tons of
cargo consigned to Victoria. The
erew stopped scabs unloading the
cargo and unloaded the mail them-
selves.

On the 19th of July the “President
Jackson’ outbound for the Orient,
docked at Victoria. When scabs
boarded the ship to unload ecareo,
they were driven off by the indis—
nant crew.

A Gompany Wnion

The local Shippine bosses are try-
ing to form these scabs into a
“union.” In an attempt to confuse
the longshoremen and to divert their
attention from the issue of the lock-
out, the determination of the lons-
shoremen not to handle unfair ships
or cargo, they are now trying to
make out that this strike is “no-
thing more than a conflict between
two unions!’

Wo sooner was this insidious lie
released from the press than a bul-
letin was issued by the TLongshore-
men’s Union which said that “‘mem-
bership in such a union can never
Sive you the status of a union man.”
Picketing continues at the docks.
Loeal workers’ organizations are siv—
ing the strikers strong support,
while to date several scabs have re-
turned to the Longshoremen’s hall
to remove their names from the
_scab-list—to become mien again, not
seabs!

ing this, or because of it, the bosses
continue to seek for scabs. Police
are almost constantly in the vicinity,
ready to give the scabs and their
bosses assistance in the form of
“protection.”

When the scabs leave work each
night they are transported fram the
docks in autos which roar past the
picket-line at nothing less than 35
miles an hour, despite the fact that
police are looking on. Any other per-
son rounding a city street corner at
such a speed would be fined heavily
for such a violation of the city’s by-
laws, if caught in the act by a po-
liceman. Not so with the scabs.
however! They are privileged per-

sons who can claim full immunity
from all and every law if necessary.

Fishermen Demand That
Bounty Be Restored

LANGARA ISLAND, B.C. July
23.—The following petition is being
circulated to all organizations of
fishermen by the Worth Island
Trollers’ Co-operative Association:
Petition For the Restoration of the

Bounty on Sea Lions and Seals.

It was decided at the Fishermen’s
meeting at North Island on June
15th, 1935:

That since the bounty was taken
off the sea lions and seals they have
increased in number, making it al-
most impossible to fish salmon and
halibut on the coast.

And sinee the proper authorities
have proved themselves incapable of
dealing with the situation, we, the
undersigned, demand the bounty to
be restored.

To assure united action of all fish-
ermen copies of the petition has been

LONDON, Eng., July 23—Britain
is massing the strongest naval forces
ever assembied in the Mediterranean
Sea, in view of the concentration of
Italian troops in East Africa. The
battleships Repulse, Renown,, and
the largest battleship in the world,
The Hood, have been assigned to
Malta. British government officials
made known the usual shallow ex-
planation that ‘“‘this move has no
connection with Italian military ac-
tivities. ’’

that they staged the riot in Regina
in order to get the leaders and jail
them.

The attack upon the peaceful
meeting was timed and all the de-
tails were planned by Inspector
Mortimer and other officials of the
R.C.M.P. along with the simultane-
ous raiding of the Relief Camp
Workers Union headquarters in
Vancouver. The methods of identi-
fying the prisoners in Regina point
to the crude frame-up tactics of the
police,

How “Identification” is Secured
One hundred and nineteen prison-
ers were taken in trucks a few days

after the arrests to the R.C.M.P.
barracks, and for four hours they
were surrounded by hundreds of

R.C.MLP. A number of citizens were
brought into the barrack square and
mingled and talked with the police

for a long time, while the police
pointed out various prisoners to
them.

Then the citizens paraded past the
prisoners and picked out the men
the police wanted identified. After
this had been done, the Inspector
sent them around again to identify
some who had been missed.

The police arrested some stool
pigeons along with the strikers, for
the purpose of getting them to plead
euilty, and swear against those who

have taken a leading part in the
strike.
Government Fear Investigation

Will Expose Trickery

The Bennett Government was to
have set up a2 commission to investi-
gate the riot. This is now being
Sidetracked. There is too much dan-
ger of exposing the crude, brutal
tacties of the police in staging the
riot. In Regina a Citizens’ Defense

not enough. The leaders of tthe
cCamp-boys must be sayed from the
vicious frame-up. A Dominion-wide
Commission of labor must be set up
and sent to Regina to investigate
the origin of the attack upon the
peaceful meeting and the shooting
down of the workers and place the
blame where it belongs.

The Rey. Hast. by no means a
communist, has been banned from
the radio for his sympathy with the
camp-boys in Regina. The Liberal
Government of Saskatchewan is us-
ing the case as a political football.
The capitalist press (both Liberal
and Tory) is conducting a campaign
against the militant leaders. The
only solution for the camp-boys and
the framed leaders is mass organized
action to wrest these heroic leaders
of the workers from the capitalist
jailers, and win for the camp-boys
work at decent wages, and abolition
of the slave camps.

NEW WESTMINSTER, July 23.—
The city council here refused a tag-
day to the striking longshoremen.
Alderman Sullivan suggested that
the city Should show its teeth. It
was reported that a police car pick-
ed up a lot of tacks in its tires near
the docks.

But are the Shipping Federation
equally handicapped in dealing with
their locked-out employees. Wo.

to approach our membership and
Cajole, threaten or bribe them to re-
turn to work. Is this taking a fair
and unbiased stand in the dispute?
Why are the citizens put to this ex-
pense for the Shipping Federation’s
benefit?

it is not to the benefit of the
citizens if Vancouver is to have this
union broken, and the men forced
to return to a speed-up system
which throws them on the scrap-
heap at forty-five, and has resulted
in the death of over fifty in the last
ten years.

And if your stand is fair and un-
biased, why should you still continue
to refuse relief to the innocent vic-
tims of the Federation’s hate, the
wives and children of the Vancouver
longshoremen, :

In view of these facts we would
ask you why you continue to give
protection to those interests exposed
now as a2 union smashing combine?
Why should they receive any more
consideration than any other citizen?

Are we entitled to no consideration
or protection whatsoever? These are
a few of the many questions we
would like to see answered and we
can give you every assurance that
the men now on strike are going to
stay on strike until a settlement is
reached which concedes the right to
organize into a union of our own
choice without dictation as to its
form or name by the Shipping Fed-
