NEW METHOD SHO 337 CARRALL STREET Workers’ Correspondenc LUMBER WORKERS T0 HOLD THEIR ANNUAL CONFERENCE B.C. Loggers and Mill Workers Convene In Vancouver in July The Lumber Workers of B.C. actively preparing their eighth nual district Convention, which be held in Vancouver on the and $rd of July. Much progress can be recorded since the district convention held a year ago, and the convention of 1935 will be another important milestone in the history of the Lumber Workers’ Industrial Union. It will be a time for reviewing the tasks fulfilled and those yet to be accomplished; where plans will be laid for future work and for the ful- Tillment of new tasks. z The convention is of ereat im- portance to every lumber worker in B.C., whether yet a member of the Luniber Workers’ Industrial Union or not. The L.W.1.U. has consis- tently organized the lumber workers are an- will 2nd tor higher wages and improved workin= conditions and has suc- ceeded, and will continue to do so and to fight also for Trade Union Unity. A number of delesates have already been elected to the conven- tion from the yarious locals on the job. Membership Is Successful. The quota of new members sect by the Executive Goard during the Membership Drive launched in Mareh has been more than half fulfilled. The quota was set for 500 new members by the first of June. To date 266 new members have been enrolled and the drive is to be carried into the convention. With a number of camps yet to hear from, and with meetings scheduled for around July ist, the quota of 500 new members can be fulfilled. Accidents on the Increase. The death toll and accidents in the logeine and lumbering industry on the B.C. coast each year are enormous. Since January of this year 19 loggers have been killed on the job, and many seriously injured. The need of organization on the job is more imperative now than at any time before. Camp and Mill GCom- mittees with organized action against intélerable Speed-up and lack of safety devices, must be our answer to this wholesale murder of workers. Citizens’ League Is-Menace. : An organized lumbering industry means that we are in a better posi- tion to combat the Fascist attacks of such organizations as the ‘'Citi- zens’ League’ and other seab- herding agencies which are formed by the ruling class under mislead- ing names for the express purpose of trying to smash real workers’ or- ganizations in order to slash wages, worsen the conditions of the work- ers in order to maintain their profits and to place the burden of the capitalist crisis on the workers. For Trades Union Unity. The Lumber Workers’ Industria] Union pledges itself to fight at all time for the Unity of the Workers in the Trade Union Movement re- gardiess of what affiliation they have, whether A.F.ofL., A.C.C.of L., W.U.L., or Independent Unions. Realizing that a United Front of the working class is needed to combat these attacks of the ruling class against the workers, the L.W.1.U. is at all times willing to co-operate with these Unions that are honestly and sincerely fighting for the im- provement of the conditions of the working class. The clogan of the lumber workers must be FOR A UNIONIZED LUMBERING INDUS- TRY and FOR TRADE UNION SSS SST I ES Unity; F.S.U.
