To Camp Strikers; For

An Abject Surrender

VANCOUVER, B.C., May 16.
Gontinuing in his strike-breaking
role, Mayor MeGeer has once again
called upon the slave camp sirikers
to return to the camps empty-hand-
ed. In a call issued through the capi-
talist press today, after a
tion with Attorney-General Sloan,
he made a “personal” appeal for the
men to give up their strike.

“Asitators’” Not Wanted

He stands for discrimination, how-
ever, if it can be called discrimina-
tion to lock men out of a slave camp.
He says that the “agitators” will not
be returned until they haye been
“dealt with.”

His new appeal follows
upon his threat of bullets instead of
bread. This time he has abandoned
all hope of the Royal Commission as
a bait to lure the men back. He
mow says that the men must wait
for “‘a change of government” at Ot-
tawa.

Personal Appeal An Affront

The overwhelming egotism of the
mayor is shown by his making his
appeal a “‘personal’ one. This ego-
tism prevents him from seeing that
he is hated and despised by the
Strikers who haye felt the blows
from the clubs of his police, have
been denied relief, and to whom he
read the Riot Act. He cannot see
that the strikers are not a bunch of
goofy Oxford Groupers that will fall
for his cant and humbug.

Extensive Election Ac-
tivities Commenced

The Communist Election Commit-
tee in Vancouver has set up fifteen
sub-committees to direct the activi-
ties connected with the election
campaisn in Vancouver East. In
this constituency there are 128 pol-
linge areas to be thoroughly can-
vassed.

The committee intends that the
program of the Communist Election
Committee is read by every voter
and non-yoter in the riding.

This will entail a great deal of
work between now and the election.
The committee needs plenty of help
and asks every supporter of the
Communist Program to come in and
put their shoulders to the wheel.

It is not too late to get on the
voters’ list as the courts of revision
will be held up to the 12th of June,
which will be the last day of regis-
tration. Anyone living in Vancou-

PROACH AT SURREY

SURREY, B.C. May 15. — The
Communist Party Election Commit-
tee here interviewed the members
of the Hjorth Road €.C.F. Club
with a proposal for united action in
the forthcoming election. The Club
was fovyarable to the proposition, but
decided that they would have to re-
fer it first to the District Council
before making a final decision.

WORKERS

VANCOUVER, May 14.
—Employees of the Ayl-
mer Cannery voted 80 per
cent in favor of coming out
on strike in sympathy with
the camp workers. The ref-
erendum was taken by the
Food Workers’ Industrial
Union as part of the plan
of the Trade Union Action
Committee.

It is intended to take a
vote at the plant of Em-
press Products and at Hed-
lund’s durine this week-
end. Mills, factories, and
plants are being visited,
and the workers ap-
proached on this question
every day during the noon

—Two game wardens, acting as
police strikebreakers and several
workers were injured during an at-
tack by the police on relief work
strikers here today.

€.C.F. requesting the extension of

the United Front already establish-
ed of the two parties for the fur-
thering of assistance to the striking
Relief Camp Workers.

The C.P.C. letter suggested the
setting up of a co-ordinating joint
committee to facilitate and co-
ordinate activities in support of the
Strike, by means of joint meetings
at shop gates, publiic mass meet-
ings, and for the lifting of the ban
against any United Front agreement
for joint struggle arrived at by
units of the C-P.C. and ©.C.F. clubs,
and for unanimity of the general
line to be advocated in the labor
press influenced by both parties.

The secretary of the Provincial
Executive, C.C.F., replied stating
that the proposals of the C.P.C.
would receive most serious. consid-
eration by the Provincial Executive

Committee at their next meeting.

It is hoped that favorable action
will be taken at an early date, as
the struggle of the Relief Camp
Workers require the establishment
of the greatest degree of unity at
the earliest possible date to ensure!

CAMP LISTER, B.C., May 12.—
The chain letter racket has pene-
trated into this neck of the woods.
Letters have been received from
Spokane, Wash., with five names
and the request that a dime be sent
to the top name, ete.

These racketeers work on the basis
of the well known axiom of Barnum,
that “‘there is a sucker born every
minute.” It is only under such a
system as capitalism that such a
bughouse racket could prosper. It
is named in this instance the sys-
tem of “Hope, Faith, Prosperity.”
It is not taboo with the authorities,
because it helps to divert the work-
ers’ attention away. from the
struggle.

In a country of socialism, such as
the Soviet Union, these racketeers
would be asked to go to work, and
failing accepting that, and if they
continued their racket, they
be placed to work in one of the
houses for correction of warped
minds. All workers should
these pests, who are mostly bank-
rupt oil sharks, con men, and tin-

Eight Corbin Miners

Eight Corbin miners have been sen-

tenced to viscious sentences for de-

fending themselves and their fam-
ilies against the police attacks dur-
ing the massacre at Corbin when
attempts were made to take scabs
through the picket lines on a GCater-
pillar tractor. Two others were fined.

Those sentenced are:

For assault, Paul Jacob,
months’ imprisonment, a fine of
$200 and in default an additional
two months; second charge
against Paul Jacobs, three
months and a fine of $100, in
default an additional one month.

WINNIPEG, Man., May 9.—Work-
ers of the Dominion Wheel Foundry
returned to work today after a one-
day strike, haying successfully
beaten back an attempt by the boss
to penalize the workers for accidents
in the shop. Other concessions
gained are:

1—No overtime until such time as
all laid off men are re-employed.

2—No worker to be transferred
from one job fo another without con-
sent of the shop committee.

8—A five day week for watchmen.

Attempt to Penalize Defeated.

The attempt of the manager

VANCOUVER, May 15.—The so-
called independent member of the
B. C. provincial house, Hugh Sav-

age, of -Cowichan-Newcastle, has
come forward with another Hitler
scheme for the disposal of the
youth.

He calls it a “Hope Plan for
Youth,” and proposes that for a
start about 5000 unwanted young

men of the province be exiled to
the wilds of B. C. and put to work
at mining development, reforesta-
tion and road building.
“Deferred” Wages

He would raise the wages from
the Slave Camp 20 cents a day to
50 cents a day. There is also a
Swindle attached to the scheme. It
is that an extra dollar per day be
added to the wages, but the young
workers are not to get it for five
years. This allows for inflation to
get in its work, after which the dol-
lar may be worth only a few cents,

showed by an increase of 10,000 new

decided to call off the strike in view

WINNIPEG, April 7.—James H.
Coleman, W.U.L. organizer, sen-

tenced to Six months in Dauphin
jail on charges connected with the
Flin Elon metal miners strike of
June, 1934, is being held in jail at
Dauphin after the expiration of his
sentence at the instigation of the
immigation authorities. Due for re-
lease on Friday last, Coleman is be-
ing held to appear before a Board of
Enquiry which is expected to visit
the jail this week,

Despite consistent enquiries, since
Coleman’s sentence, the immigration
department have failed to establish
Coleman's birth place,-but the pres-
ent action of the department is in-
terpreted here as being an attempt
to deport him despite this failure.

Resolutions protesting the threat-
ened deportation of Coleman are be-
ing sent to the Minister of Immi-
gration, Ottawa; Immisration Au-
thorities, Winnipes, and the Govy-
ernor, Dauphin jail, Dauphin, Man.

GOLDBRIDGEH, B.C., May 14.
Five hundred striking gold miners
have refused to accept the terms of
the mine owners here, and are stand-
ing solid for a dollar a day increase.
Operators have threatened to close
the mines down unless the miners
accept their terms. Victor Spencer,
millionaire president of the Pioneer,
president of B.C. Nickel, and closely
identified with many other rich
properties, has made the announce-
ment that the mines will be closed,
and threatens to force hundreds of
miners and their families on relief.

Admits Huge Profits

Mr. Sloan, the manager of the Pio-
neer, which is the richest gold mine
in the world for its size, stated at
the commencement of the strike,
“T made enough profit last month
to be able to keep her closed for a
few months.” He said this to some
miners, and added, “You won’t need
any picket line, either.’

Starvation Wages

Some of the married miners have
received as low as $2.50 wages for
two weeks’ work, after deductions
have been made for Group Insur-
ance, Community Club, school taxes,
tennis court, Jones tax, Compensa-
tion, store bill (prices at the com-
pany store are aS much as 100 per
cent higher than Vancouvers prices),
and doctor. (Still if a miner foes to
hospital he has to pay $2.50 a day.)

The profits of Pioneer haye avyer-
aged around $200,000 a month for
the past two years. Bralorne has
made immense profits.

Adam Bell Unmasked

Adam Bell, Deputy Minister of
Labor, was up to offer the miners
conciliation, and also offered the
bosses’ terms, which the men re-
jected. The first offer made by Bell
would have meant a reduction in
wages for a few of the miners. The
miners rejected any offers of Adam
Bell, and demanded that he get out
of Bridge River.

the company boarding house yet.

District Waterfront Workers’ Asso-
